Page 155 Chapter 5 Buddhist Illusion and the Landscape Arts Truths are illusions that we have forgotten are illusions. —Friedrich Nietzsche Practice illusion by means of illusion. —The Perfect Enlightenment Sutra While the Kitayama Zen views of landscape paintings we have surveyed were grounded in the venerable Chinese Mahayana and Zen Buddhist traditions, they also developed their own distinctive vision of the landscape arts. Chinese Zen monks and nuns had modified classical Indian and Chinese Buddhist ontology to emphasize the two premises of the illusory, ultimately empty character of reality and the nondualistic interplay of the realms of samsaric suffering and the enlightened bliss of nirvana. 1 The Kitayama Five Mountains monks applied these premises to artistic creation and interpretation through such canonical Buddhist terms describing meditative states as "the samadhi of [seeing that all is] like an illusion" (C. juhuan sanmei; J. nyogen zammai), and "the samadhi of playfulness" (C. yuge san mei; J. yuge zammai). In this and the final chapter we explore the central role played by these two Buddhist themes in the Kitayama religioaesthetic vision of the landscape arts: Mahayana ontological and heuristic theories of illusion; and a mode of Zen enlightened activity characterized by unimpeded playfulness. CHAPTER 5 RHETORIC: the instrument of mediation "Huang Po is such a grandmother that he utterly exhausted himself with your troubles!" said Ta-yu. "And now you come here asking whether you were at fault or not!" At these words, Lin-chi attained great enlightenment. "Ah," he cried, "there isn't so much to Huang Po's Buddha-dharmal" The Recorded Sayings of Lin-chi1 Ts'ui-feng asked: "What words does Huang Po use to instruct people?" "Huang Po has no words," said Lin-chi. The Recorded Sayings of Lin-chi1 Language plays a far greater role in the mind of a Zen master like Huang Po than that of an "instrument," a tool intentionally applied to the carrying out of particular purposes. Nevertheless, when language does function as an instrument in Zen, it is a tool of considerable power and precision. Indeed, in its "golden age" and today, Zen has been best known for its unique instrumental rhetoric, its own counterclaims notwithstanding. The "discourse of awakening" in Zen produces a kind of rhetoric very much unlike anything ever heard or read in East Asia or elsewhere, a way of speaking/writing that is distinctively "Zen." In this chapter we consider both the character of this rhetoric and the role it plays in the quest for "awakening." In particular, the Catholic Church in Korea had been widely credited for its dedication to justice for the weak and to democracy. However, it is undeniable that the Catholic Church in South Korea has lost its social influence. Indeed, over the past decade there has been a significant drop in the number of Catholics and the Church, once a pillar of civil society, has continuously lost its social position. While there are various possible explanations for this circumstance, a satisfactory one can be found in its recent past history. During the 1970s and 1980s the Church was the symbol of social and political resistance, and there was a lay leader and activist, who played a significant background role. Admittedly, Jang Ilsoon (1924-1994) is a little-known figure and thinker within Christian communities in contemporary Korea, but his teachings are far more influential among non-believers than Catholics regardless of their faith and political stance. -

Gushan: the Formation of a Chan Lineage During the Seventeenth Century and Its Spread to Taiwan Hsuan-Li Wang Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Hsuan-Li Wang All rights reserved ABSTRACT Gushan: the Formation of a Chan Lineage During the Seventeenth Century and Its Spread to Taiwan Hsuan-Li Wang Taking Gushan 鼓山 Monastery in Fujian Province as a reference point, this dissertation investigates the formation of the Gushan Chan lineage in Fujian area and its later diffusion process to Taiwan. From the perspective of religion diffusion studies, this dissertation investigates the three stages of this process: 1. the displacement of Caodong 曹洞 Chan center to Fujian in the seventeenth century; 2. Chinese migration bringing Buddhism to Taiwan in the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) and 3. the expansion diffusion activities of the institutions and masters affiliated with this lineage in Taiwan during the Japanese rule (1895-1945), and the new developments of humanistic Buddhism (renjian fojiao 人間佛教) after 1949. In this spreading process of the Gushan Chan lineage, Taiwanese Buddhism has emerged as the bridge between Chinese and Japanese Buddhism because of its unique historical experiences. It is in the expansion diffusion activities of the Gushan Chan lineage in Taiwan that Taiwanese Buddhism has gradually attained autonomy during the Japanese rule, leading to post-war new developments in contemporary humanistic Buddhism. Chan Buddhism and the Chinese Ancestors Spring Term 2014 Seminary Class Sylabus The seminary class offering for the spring 2014 term will be Chan Buddhism and the Chinese Ancestors. This ten-week class series is scheduled for Tuesday evenings from February 4th through April 15th. During this class series, we will examine the stories and traditional teachings of and about our Chinese Dharma ancestors and other significant Chan masters from the time of Bodhidharma, through the Tang and Sung Dynasties to and including Tiantong Rujing. Through these stories, we experience the particular way in which we hold the memory of our lineage tradition. We will also follow the development of Chan as it gains color and additional meaning through the authenticity and uniqueness of each generation to become an important cultural force in Chinese and other East Asian societies. The primary text for the reading assignments for each class (listed below) is Zen's Chinese Heritage: The Masters and their Teachings by Andy Ferguson either the first (2000) edition or the expanded (2011) edition. Optional, supplemental text materials will include sections from (1) The Platform Sutra: The Zen Teaching of Hui-neng by Red Pine and (2) Zen Buddhism: A History: Volume 1, India and China by Heinrich Dumoulin. Texts may be purchased; however, copies of all three texts will be placed on reserve for this class in the DRZC library. The classes will be led by Fumyo Mishaga, Genko Rainwater, and Allison Shin'ei Brown. For Seminary credit, each student will be required to complete a written assignment. So˘n Master T’oeong So˘ngch’o˘l’s Legacy: A Reflection on the Political Background of the Korean Sudden/Gradual Debate Bernard Senécal (So˘ Myo˘ngwo˘n) To reform contemporary Korean Buddhism T’oeong So˘ngch’o˘l proclaimed a return to the Buddha S´a¯kyamuni’s teaching, promoted the sudden/sudden doctrine of awakening to the Middle Path through practice of Keyword Meditation (kanhwaso˘n), and adamantly condemned Pojo Chinul’s (1158-1210) sudden/gradual approach, thus giving rise to the ongoing Korean sudden/gradual debate. Despite So˘ngch’o˘l’s reputation as a world renouncer who steered clear of politics, this essay examines the socio-political underpinnings of his reformation and defines six points of structural resonance between it and the way of the authoritarian state under which it was carried out. Those six points form a constellation suggesting that the famous master’s hermeneutics of Buddhism, i.e. his overall interpretation of the tradition in the second half of the twentieth century, reflect the national as well as the geo-strategic tensions resulting from the division of the Korean peninsula and the Cold War until 1988. Therefore, at the dawn of the 25th anniversary of the ROK’s democratization, when envisaging the future of the Korean peninsula, Korean Buddhism and the worldwide propagation of Keyword Meditation, it is imperative to keep in mind the socio-political context that shaped So˘ngch’o˘l’s approach and continues to inform his legacy.
