The Disturbing Victims of Chuck Palahniuk
The Disturbing Victims of Chuck Palahniuk Anders Westlie Master thesis at ILOS UNIVERSITETET I OSLO 16.11.2012 II The Disturbing Victims of Chuck Palahniuk III © Anders Westlie 2012 The Disturbing Victims of Chuck Palahniuk Anders Westlie http://www.duo.uio.no/ Trykk: CopyCat Express, Oslo IV Abstract The writings of Chuck Palahniuk contain a large variety of strange and interesting characters. Many of them are victims of the choices they or others made, which is how their lives become interesting. I aim to see if there is any basis in reality for some of the situations and fears that happen. I also mean that Palahniuk thinks people are afraid of the wrong things, and afraid of too many things in general, and will approach this theory in my discussion. V VI Introduction This thesis has been through an abundance of versions and changed shape and content very many times over the years; from being all psychoanalysis to pure close reading, and ended with a study of victims, fears and reactions. In the end, the amount of close reading that has gone into it has bypassed the use of theory. This is mostly a reaction to past criticism to my over-use of critics, and focusing on that rather than the texts at hand. I find my time disposition in the production process of this paper to be shame, but life will sometimes get in the way of good intentions. As such, I hope that you, dear reader, find my efforts not in vain and take some interest in what my efforts have produced. -

The Zombie in American Culture by Graeme Stewart a Thesis Presented
The Zombie in American Culture by Graeme Stewart A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Arts in English - Literary Studies Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2013 © Graeme Stewart 2013 AUTHOR'S DECLARATION I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii ABSTRACT My research explores how the oft-maligned zombie genre reveals deep-seated American cultural tendencies drawn from the nation's history with colonization and imperialism. The zombie genre is a quintessentially American construct that has been flourishing in popular culture for nearly 60 years. Since George A. Romero first pioneered the genre with 1968's Night of the Living Dead , zombie narratives have demonstrated a persistent resilience in American culture to emerge as the ultimate American horror icon. First serving as a method to exploit and react to cultural anxieties in the 1960s, the zombie genre met the decade's tumultuous violence in international conflicts like the Vietnam War and domestic revolutions like the Civil Rights Movement. It adapted in the 1970s to expose a perceived excess in consumer culture before reflecting apocalyptic fears at the height of the Cold War in the 1980s. Following a period of rest in the relatively peaceful 1990s, the genre re-emerged in the early 2000s to reflect cultural anxieties spurred on by the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the subsequent resurgence of war those attacks inspired. -

Bad Bugs Bookclub Meeting Report: Rant: an Oral Biography of Buster Casey by Chuck Palahniuk the Aim of the Bad Bugs Book Club I
Bad Bugs Bookclub Meeting Report: Rant: an oral biography of Buster Casey by Chuck Palahniuk The aim of the Bad Bugs Book Club is to get people interested in science, specifically microbiology, by reading books (novels) in which infectious disease forms some part of the story. We also try to associate books, where possible, with some other activity or event, to widen interest, and to broaden impact. We have established a fairly fluid membership of our bookclub through our website In The Loop (www.sci-eng.mmu.ac.uk/intheloop), but we hope to encourage others to join, to set up their own bookclub, suggest books and accompanying activities to us, and give feedback about the books that they have read, using our website as the focus for communication. Our bookclub comprises both microbiologists and members of the general public. We felt that this would encourage some discussion on the science – accuracy, impact etc – as well as about the book. Chuck Palahniuk is the author of Fight Club, also a memorable movie. Fight Club challenges the issue of reality towards its end, and Rant, a later novel (2007) does the same throughout. The sleeve notes say ‘Buster (Rant) Casey just may be the most efficient serial killer of our time. A high school rebel, Rant Casey escapes from his small home town for the big city where he becomes the leader of an urban demolition derby called Party Crashing. Rant Casey will die a spectacular highway death, after which his friends gather the testimony needed to build an oral history of his short, violent life. -

My aim is to show how Palahniuk deals with different aspects of gender in American society, be it the dichotomous relationship between femininity/masculinity and gay/straight, and also to show how his writing unearths an underlying critique of American society as a whole. The chapters will focus on the main characters of the three novels; depicting the characters’ journey to achieving both physical and spiritual freedom, and thus authenticity, by deconstructing normative notions of gender. The binary categories of gender have come to serve as a means of structuring society in a convenient and simple way, yet complicating the situation for those who fall on the outside of such categories.
