The analysis begins with dramatic concerns, where musico-dramatic intensity analysis graphs show the relationship between music and drama, and how one may affect the interpretation of events in the other. These graphs also show hierarchical recursion in both music and drama. The focus of the analysis then switches to how Sondheim uses traditional accompaniment schemata, but also stretches the schemata into patterns that are distinctly of his voice; particularly in the use of the waltz in four, developing accompaniment, and emerging meter. Sondheim shows his harmonic voice in how he juxtaposes treble and bass lines, creating diagonal dissonances. -

What happens after “happily ever after?” Fractured fairy tales of a darker hue provide the context for Into the Woods, which deconstructs the Brothers Grimm by way of “The Twilight Zone.” While the faces and names are familiar, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack in the Beanstalk and company inhabit a sylvan neighborhood in which witches and bakers are next-door neighbors, handsome princes from once-parallel fables are competitive (and equally vain) brothers, and all the stories intersect through unexpected new plot twists. Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s beloved musical intertwines classic fairytales with a contemporary edge to tell stories of wishes granted and “the price” paid. The George and Ethel Martin Papers Marymount Manhattan College 221 East 71st Street New York, New York 10021 Archives Collection #004 Processed December 17, 2004 Mary Elizabeth Brown In 2005, shortly after Marymount Manhattan College made the George and Ethel Martin Papers available to the public George and Ethel Martin, and Elaine Stritch, came to the college to discuss their work with a group of musical theatre students. It was a magical afternoon, and one of the last. George Martin died April 6, 2011, and Ethel entered a facility caring for persons with Alzheimer’s Disease. On November 1, 2011, Pam Martin, wife of their son Chris, contacted Marymount Manhattan College regarding adding to the Martin Papers, and on July 11, 2012, a large box arrived, the contents of which have been processed for this collection.1 This material includes more information on the Martins’ years as dancers and backstage professionals. It complements an interview the Martins have on deposit at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Dorothy and Lewis Cullman Center, and material the Martins gathered on choreographer Jack Cole, which is at the Jack Cole Collection at Jacob’s Pillow Dance at Becket, Massachusetts.2 Photograph albums documenting the Martins’ career are in the possession of the Martins’ son Chris and daughter-in-law Pam.3 Box 1 Series I: Oversize.
