Posebno hvala mojoj obitelji i prijateljima bez čije ljubavi i podrške ništa od ovog ne bi bilo moguće. 2 Sažetak Korespondencija hrvatskog skladatelja i glazbenog pisca Antuna Dobronića čuva se najvećim dijelom u Zbirci muzikalija i audiomaterijala Nacionalne i sveučilišne knjižnice u Zagrebu. Ovaj diplomski rad rezultat je popisivanja i analize 792 jedinice ove građe, koje se odnose na vremensko razdoblje od 1887. do 1929. godine. Podaci su organizirani u tablicu u programu Microsoft Excel u vidu kataloga te potom analizirani. Na temelju sadržaja pisama, stvoreno je osam tematskih cjelina: mladost u Dalmaciji, skladateljska djelatnost, publicistička djelatnost, Dobronićev doprinos cecilijanskom pokretu, težnja da napiše djelo o povijesti glazbe na hrvatskom jeziku, korespondencija s hrvatskim i inozemnim nakladnicima, sudjelovanje u organizaciji međunarodne izložbe Musik im Leben der Völker u Frankfurtu 1927. te stanje hrvatske glazbe u Prvom svjetskom ratu. Kontekstualizacijom podataka iz pisama na temelju relevantne literature, ove su tematske cjeline pretvorene u studije slučaja. Rezultati istraživanja potvrdili su već poznata saznanja o Dobronićevu životu, ponudili nove kutove gledanja na neke od njih, ali su urodili i nekim dosad slabo poznatim činjenicama, poput njegova rada na djelu o povijesti glazbe ili doprinosa organizaciji međunarodnog glazbenog festivala u Frankfurtu. Ključne riječi: Antun Dobronić, korespondencija, Nacionalna i sveučilišna knjižnica, skladateljski rad, cecilijanski pokret, glazbeno izdavaštvo, izložba Musik in Leben der Völker Frankfurt 1927. 3 Summary Correspondence of Croatian composer and music writer Antun Dobronić is being kept, for the most part, in the Music Collection of the National and University Library in Zagreb. This master’s thesis is the result of listing and analyzing 792 units of this collection relating to the time period between 1887 and 1929. The data was organized in a Microsoft Excel table as a catalogue and was then analyzed. Based on the contents of the letters, eight thematic units were created: youth in Dalmatia, Dobronić’s work as a composer, work as publicist, his contribution to the Cecilian movement, aspiration to write a music history piece in Croatian, correspondence with Croatian and foreign music publishers, taking part in the organization of the International exhibition Musik im Leben der Völker in Frankfurt in 1927, and the state of Croatian music in World War I. By contextualizing the data from the letters based on relevant works cited, these thematic units were transformed into case studies. The research results confirmed the already existing data regarding the life of Antun Dobronić while offering some new points of view for some of them, as well as providing some little-known facts, such as his work on a book on music history or the scope of his involvement in the organization of International music festival in Frankfurt. Uvod Istraživanje korespondencija skladatelja važan je muzikološki posao. Ne upuštajući se u tu razgranatu temu na europskoj ili svjetskoj razini, možemo navesti primjer velikog projekta sređivanja i objavljivanja korespondencije Franje Ksavera Kuhača, koji je pokazao kako proučavanje ovog tipa izvora može na vidjelo iznijeti brojne nove podatke o osobi kojoj korespondencija pripada te proširiti i objasniti kontekste u kojima je djelovala. Korespondencija može ponekad otkriti motivaciju iza pojedinih glazbenih djela ili publicističkih radova, kao i probleme s kojima se skladatelj suočava u kontekstu svog vremena. Mogu se pronaći i pojedini događaji i detalji koji su spletom okolnosti pali u zaborav i ne spominju se u biografijama, ali su iz današnjeg, retrospektivnog pogleda vrlo zanimljivi i zaslužuju da ih se spomene. Korespondencija često sadrži i brojne podatke o drugim suvremenicima, institucijama i glazbenom životu te mogu pomoći boljem razumijevanju nekog razdoblja u povijesti. U Hrvatskoj je do danas, uz brojne znanstvene i stručne radove, objavljeno pet monografija o korespondencijama skladatelja. Dva sveska Kuhačeve korespondencije uz popratne komentare i objašnjenja, dva sveska korespondencije Blagoja Berse te jedna monografija o korespondenciji Ivana Matetića Ronjgova.1 Ovaj diplomski rad rezultat je mog istraživanja i obrade korespondencije skladatelja Antuna Dobronića i predstavlja moju težnju da pridonesem velikom poslu obrade i analize korespondencija hrvatskih skladatelja, kao i da rezultatima ovog istraživanja naglasim važnost tog posla. Djelomično je motiviran prethodnim iskustvom rada na obradi korespondencije hrvatskog muzikologa Josipa Andreisa u okviru kolegija „Glazbena arhivistika“ na studiju muzikologije na Muzičkoj akademiji. Ovo sam istraživanje predstavila na 20. godišnjem susretu Hrvatskog muzikološkog društva 2019. godine.2 Treba istaknuti studentski doprinos arhivističkom radu, koji ponekad urodi vrlo vrijednim istraživanjima, poput onog Lucije Bodić i Tereze Špralja3 na korespondenciji Huberta Pettana, također u Zbirci muzikalija i audiomaterijala. Korespondencija Antuna Dobronića sadrži vrijedne detalje o njegovu životu i radu te skladateljskom utjecaju u 1 Usp.     MILKO KELEMEN: LIFE AND SELECTED WORKS FOR VIOLONCELLO by JOSIP PETRAČ (Under the Direction of David Starkweather) ABSTRACT Milko Kelemen (b. 1924) is one of the most extraordinary Croatian composers of the post-World War II era. He has received numerous prestigious awards for his work, while his compositions are published by major companies, including Schott, Universal, Peters, and Hans Sikorski editions. His music is little studied or known internationally. This paper examines this innovative, avant-garde musician and sheds light both on Kelemen’s life and his compositional technique. The latter is examined in four compositions featuring cello as the main subject: Changeant (1968), Drammatico (1983), Requiem for Sarajevo (1994), and Musica Amorosa (2004). The examination of these compositions is placed in a biographical context which reveals how Kelemen’s keen political and cultural interests influenced his development as a composer. In particular, this document looks at Kelemen’s role as one of the founders, and the first president, of the Zagreb Music Biennale Festival, an event known for its ground-breaking work in bringing together artists and composers from the eastern and western blocs during the Cold War, as well as revitalising Croatia’s old-fashioned and provincial cultural scene. This festival of avant-garde music has been running since 1961. Katalog djela u fondu Zbirke muzikalija i audiomaterijala Nacionalne i sveučilišne knjižnice u Zagrebu Split, 10.travnja 2018. 1 Predgovor Katalog djela hrvatskog skladatelja Jakova Gotovca (1895. - 1982.) nastao je u povodu 120-te godišnjice njegovog rođenja. Najznačajniji radovi doprinos su afirmiranju i učvršćivanju nacionalnog glazbenog smjera u Hrvatskoj između dva svjetska rata. Bogata ostavština u Zbirci muzikalija i audiomaterijala Nacionalne i sveučilišne knjižnice u Zagrebu, dokaz je plodnog stvaralaštva na područjima solo pjesme, operne, zborske i orkestralne glazbe. U svojim djelima redovito se služio s dva elementa: ljudskim glasom i orkestrom, započevši umjetničko stvaranje na području vokalnih vrsta tj. solo popijevki i zborskih djela, da bi kasnije nastavio sa složenijim oblicima scenskih djela i jednostavačnih simfonijskih skladbi programskog karaktera, te je harmonizirao i obrađivao narodne napjeve. Pristupajući oblikovanju sadržaja svojih djela uzimao je stihove iz narodne lirike i epike, glazbenim sredstvima dočaravao je određenu sredinu i potrebno raspoloženje. Svoje kompozicije obogatio je obilježjima glazbenog folklora ali i mediteranskom raspjevanošću i senzibilnošću. U prvih dvadeset godina rada stvorena su njegova najznačajnija djela, kojima je potvrdio svoj perspektivni skladateljski put i obogatio hrvatsku glazbu tog vremena. Pojedine skladbe rano su privukle pažnju inozemne publike i izdavača, što je pridonijelo njegovoj popularnosti i izvan granica naše domovine. “Živio je uporno svoj dugi vijek bez napuštanja svojih, gotovo polemičkih navika. Znao je braniti svoje životne i umjetničke stavove, baratajući svojstvenim argumentima, tražeći uvijek čvrste protuargumente u slučaju bilo kakvih sukoba mišljenja. Nije to bila tvrdoglavost, već dosljednost stava i uvjerenja da čini onako kako smatra da je ispravno. No nikad nauštrb tuđih mišljenja i stajališta.

The aim is to discover new, previously completely unknown information about Dalmatian musical heritage, as well as European musi- cal heritage preserved in Dalmatia, which testifies to the con- nection of Croatian musical sources to Central European and Mediterranean musical and cultural circles. Centred on instru- ments of art music preserved in Dalmatian museums, the re- search is a contribution to the evidence about the continuity of musical culture in the region. These instruments are a reflec- tion of the rich and developed Dalmatian musical history, the complexity of which stems from a tradition of folk and sacred music that spans centuries and is permeated with various influ- ences. On the other hand, they are evidence of close relations between Dalmatia and Europe, in the past and the present. This also highlights the relevance of the research presented here, in which instruments – as concrete results of intercultural interac- tions – have been analysed in a broader musicological and cul- tural context for the first time. Until then I had lived with my parents in Split where, in June 1942,1 experienced one of the saddest days of my life. This was the day when Fascist units, the so-called Figli de la Lupe (the sons of the wolf) suddenly burst into the Jewish temple. Dalmatian Refugees in Egypt, 1944–1946 Florian Bieber “In front of us, the task is to build and complete the peoples’ government in exile.” Mate Barbić, 27.11.44.1 30°02’10.2”N, 32°36’47.9”E. A star marks the spot. In the desert east of the Suez Canal, some ten kilometers northeast of the Egyptian city of Suez, a five- pointed star is visible from space. The cemetery in the shape of a Partisan five-pointed star (petokraka) is the only visible reminder in Egypt of 30,000 Yugoslavs who found refuge here during the two years at the cusp of World War Two and the early post-war period, between 1944 and 1946.2 The refu- gees, mostly from Dalmatia, had fled Nazi occupation of the Dalmatian coast following the Italian surrender in September 1943 with the help of the British navy and the Yugoslav partisans.3 They first made their way to southern Italy and later to Egypt. Most found temporary shelter in El Shatt, a former British Army camp prepared to defend Egypt from the Axis campaign in north Africa. Draft versions were presented at the 2017 ASEEES convention in Chicago and the 2017 Brownbag Seminar of the Center for Southeast European Studies, University of Graz.
