EDITORIAL Finally completed this issue way late. Hope you manage to find something of interest. In this issue I announce my intention to start up OBIR Magazine which will be entirely devoted to reviews of Canadian SF&F Genre stories, magazines, and books. Why is it called OBIR? Go to page 15 to find out what this acronym stands for. Try guessing first. Bet you can’t get it right! Free to all who interested in reading it. I’m also toying with the idea of starting up an online SF fiction magazine possibly sometime in 2016. It, too, will be free to anyone who wants to read it. I intend it to be a paying market for Canadian writers, poets and artists. If I can come up with sufficient funds that is. Only a pipedream at the moment. But maybe… Please send me feedback! You can reach me at: < The Graeme > Or my Twitter account: < @rgraemecameron > And don’t forget to check out my website < Cdn. Although the stage tonight has a very British feel (well, London at least), this ceremony celebrates the worldwide appeal of science fiction. Presenting awards tonight, there are guests from Britain and America, but also Nigeria, China, Canada, and even Australia – just to mention a few of the countries as the members of this convention come from all over the globe – and our list of nomi- nees hail from around the world too. However, it is not just the geographical diversity of our field that we celebrate tonight – it’s the diversity within fandom. Although you might not like the styles of all of the nominated works and you might not choose to read all the myriad sub-genres that exist within speculative fiction, tonight they have their place as Hugo Award nominees, chosen by the community of fans. As Ray Bradbury put it, “Anything you dream is fiction, and anything you accomplish is science.

Perhaps the most important influences on my early thinking about this topic came from Paweł Frelik and Larry McCaffery, with whom I shared a rousing desert hike in the foothills of Borrego Springs. After an evening of food, drink, and lively exchange, I had the long-overdue epiphany to channel my training in musical performance more directly into my academic pursuits. The early support, friendship, and collegiality of these two had a tremendously positive effect on the arc of my scholarship; knowing they believed in the project helped me pencil its first sketchy contours—and ultimately see it through to the end.

JUDITH MERRIL: AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY AND GUIDE Compiled by Elizabeth Cummins Department of English and Technical Communication University of Missouri-Rolla Rolla, MO 65409-0560 College Station, TX The Center for the Bibliography of Science Fiction and Fantasy December 2006 Table of Contents Preface Judith Merril Chronology A. Books B. Short Fiction C. Nonfiction D. Poetry E. Other Media F. Editorial Credits G. Secondary Sources About Elizabeth Cummins PREFACE Scope and Purpose This Judith Merril bibliography includes both primary and secondary works, arranged in categories that are suitable for her career and that are, generally, common to the other bibliographies in the Center for Bibliographic Studies in Science Fiction. Works by Merril include a variety of types and modes—pieces she wrote at Morris High School in the Bronx, newsletters and fanzines she edited; sports, westerns, and detective fiction and non-fiction published in pulp magazines up to 1950; science fiction stories, novellas, and novels; book reviews; critical essays; edited anthologies; and both audio and video recordings of her fiction and non-fiction. Works about Merill cover over six decades, beginning shortly after her first science fiction story appeared (1948) and continuing after her death (1997), and in several modes— biography, news, critical commentary, tribute, visual and audio records. This new online bibliography updates and expands the primary bibliography I published in 2001 (Elizabeth Cummins, “Bibliography of Works by Judith Merril,” Extrapolation, vol. 42, 2001). It also adds a secondary bibliography. However, the reasons for producing a research- based Merril bibliography have been the same for both publications. Published bibliographies of Merril’s work have been incomplete and often inaccurate.

Forte ABSTRACT In 1971, Isaac Asimov observed in humanity, “a science-important society.” For this he credited the man who had been his editor in the 1940s during the period known as the “golden age” of American science fiction, John W. Campbell, Jr. Campbell was editor of Astounding Science-Fiction, the magazine that launched both Asimovʼs career and the golden age, from 1938 until his death in 1971. Campbell and his authors set the foundation for the modern sci-fi, cementing genre distinction by the application of plausible technological speculation. Campbell assumed the “science-important society” that Asimov found thirty years later, attributing sci-fi ascendance during the golden age a particular compatibility with that cultural context. On another level, sci-fiʼs compatibility with “science-important” tendencies during the first half of the twentieth-century betrayed a deeper agreement with the social structures that fueled those tendencies and reflected an explication of modernity on capitalist terms.
