Clocks became showpieces. --Anthony Aveni1 Introduction L’Horloge Astronomique, the Astronomical Clock, housed in the Cathédrale Notre-Dame in Strasbourg, France is a living icon to a half-millennium of history. Its most striking feature is a massive planetary dial with the signs of the Zodiac and real- time representations of the locations of the Sun, Moon and five visible planets which, given today’s Christian attitude toward astrology, appears either hypocritical or a blatant dichotomy. Why would a Catholic cathedral display such a device if its purpose was not astrological? How and why did that attitude change over six hundred years? What was the real story behind L’Horloge Astronomique? The answer lies in the mosaical picture presented by the religious, scientific and political context between the 12th – 19th Centuries. There is certainly an apparent difference between the two : the Socialists are willing indeed to admit the legi­ timacy of a (( disannexation » of Alsace, but at the same time they claim as necessary a ple­ biscite on the part of the Alsatians.. Whether before or after that disannexation, they look this formality as indispensable, which is uodn tantamount to considering Alsace as not being an integral part of France, a constituent cell- without which the Nation were but a mutila­ ted body. Now this is precisely the view which the German a apostles » are doing their best to urge upon the Neutrals, and even upon our Allies. De l’origine du nom Argentoratum On sait que le nom antique de Strasbourg était Argentoratum et qu’elle a pris à l’époque mérovingienne celui de Strateburc (1). L’origine du toponyme ancien laisse encore bon nombre d’historiens perplexes. Nous nous contenterons donc de faire ici l’état des lieux. La forme romaine du nom est partiellement conservée sur une borne posée entre 72 et 74 de notre ère par le légat Cnaeus Pinarius Clemens sur la route tracée depuis le Rhin en direction du Danube. On y lit (…) rate, ce qu’on peut restituer en Argentorate (2). Cette forme s’est par la suite latinisée en Argentoratum (3). L’élément rate était celtique et signifiait « enceinte, mur » et par extension « forteresse » (4) On le retrouve dans Carpentorate, nom antique de Carpentras, généralement interprété comme « enceinte des chariots » (5). La seconde partie du toponyme ne pose donc pas de véritable problème. Le fort sur l’Ill ? La difficulté vient de l’élément Argento-. On a proposé d’y reconnaître le nom antique de l’Ill. La rivière aurait à l’époque préromaine porté un second nom, « la brillante » (6). Cela semble conforté par le toponyme Argentovaria, littéralement « la rivière Argenta » (7). Il existe par ailleurs des hydronymes Ergels, Ergers, qui semblent renvoyer à un hypothétique *Argant (8). En fait, on empile ici une hypothèse sur une hypothèse, ce qui est un procédé hasardeux. Towards the end of the middle ages these were serious and important questions – and completely W Malleus Maleficarum new ones. Between 1430 and 1500, a number of learned ‘witch-theorists’ attempted to answer such questions, and of these perhaps the most famous are the Dominican inquisitors Heinrich Institoris and Jacob Sprenger, the authors of the Malleus Maleficarum, or The Hammer of Witches. The Malleus is an important text and is frequently quoted by authors across a wide range of scholarly disciplines.Yet it also presents serious difficulties: it is difficult to understand out of context, and is not generally representative of late medieval learned thinking. This, the first book-length study of the original text in English, provides students and scholars with an introduction to this controversial work and to the conceptual world of its authors. Like all witch-theorists, Institoris and Sprenger constructed their witch out of a constellation of pre-existing popular beliefs and learned traditions. BROEDEL Therefore, to understand the Malleus, one must also understand the contemporary and subsequent debates over the reality and nature of witches.

Alsace and Lorraine are storied, often contested lands located in eastern France on its border with Germany and the Low Countries. Alsace (see map, right), at 3,196 square miles, is about one-quarter larger than the state of Connecticut1. Lorraine (see map, page 4), at 9,089 square miles, is just slightly smaller than the state of Vermont2. Along with Champaign-Ardenne, they form the modern region Grand Est whose regional capital and largest city is Strasbourg. The historic Alsace Region was the smallest in metro- politan France, made up of two departments, Bas-Rhin in the north and Haut-Rhin in the south. The region features a large plain about four times longer than it is wide and situated between the Vosges Mountains and the Rhine River. Prior to the Franco-Prussian War, Al- sace, specifically the Haut-Rhin, also included the Ter- ritoire de Belfort. When the Germans took control over the rest of Alsace, it became the smallest department in France, and was attached to Franche-Comté and is now part of Bourgogne- Franche-Comté. The historic Lorraine Region was much larger and con- sisted of four departments, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Moselle, and Vosges.
