Premiered alongside his acclaimed 'the little match girl passion' (a fusion of Hans Christian Andersen's short story and Bach's 'St Matthew Passion'), this haunting song cycle continues its moving comparison between the worlds of the living and the dead. Revisiting Andersen's tale, Lang was reminded of the frequent occurrence of Death as a character in the songs of Schubert (e.g. 'Death and the Maiden'). In an attempt to create a fuller picture of this elusive being, Lang scoured every single Schubert song text, compiling every instance of when Death speaks. After roughly translating and trimming passages from 32 songs, Lang assembled them to create these five songs. For the music, Lang turned away from the classical song tradition. He notes that, "indie rock seems to be the place where Schubert's sensibilities now lie, a better match for direct storytelling and intimate emotionality." Appropriately, the piece was written for four musicians who started life in the classical sphere before drifting towards the world of indie rock: Shara Nova (My Brightest Diamond), Bryce Dessner (The National), Owen Pallett, and Nico Muhly. 'death speaks' is paired with songs and instrumental numbers from across the musical spectrum, all of which touch on the topic of mortality. Not often open to the public, The Pathology Museum, part of Queen Mary University of London, is a Grade II Listed Medical Museum situated at the top of St Bartholomew’s Hospital; it houses over 5000 medical specimens displayed over 3 mezzanine levels. The Eastern Michigan University Choral Department and the Michigan American Choral Directors Association are so pleased to welcome you to Sing for Justice, Michigan! Music has always been way for people to express themselves and the call for justice is not new to our age. We each understand that the arts have a role to play, and that is why we are here. To understand and to maximize that role is critical to the artist and we are here to discuss the intersection of arts and justice issues. While we have differences among us, the arts can be a common ground for people of myriad backgrounds, whether those variations be political, religious, cultural, or otherwise. Today we celebrate these differences and we gather to examine how we can help inspire others to celebrate them, as well. EMU and ACDA-MI are thrilled to host renowned composer and arranger Stacey Gibbs, singer-songwriter Shara Nova from the band My Brightest Diamond, and a variety of other presenters and performing ensembles as they seek to find ways to use the arts for justice issues.

decemberists albums free download torrent The Decemberists Release Music Video on BitTorrent. The indie rock band “The Decemberists” has more faith in BitTorrent than MTV. The band from Portland, Oregon want their video to be available to a wide public, and BitTorrent is the easiest way to do so. For the most part, MTV and VH1 won’t touch video unless bands have sold a huge number of records, it’s impossible to get rotation.” Publishing a video on BitTorrent, is cheap, easy and efficient. The hardcore fans helped to seed the torrent and within a couple of days the torrent was downloaded more that 2000 times. Slim Moon, founder of Kill Rock Stars, the Decemberists’ record label responds: “No matter where you stand on issues of copyright, a network like BitTorrent is really for exactly this kind of thing When you have content that you want to freely distribute, it seems like … the most logical way to distribute.” The video for “Sixteen Military Wives” was shot for less than $6,000 at a high school in Portland, Oregon, and features members of the band participating in a Model United Nations, a simulation popular in high schools to teach students about problem-solving and international relations. In the video, Decemberists singer Colin Meloy represents the United States and boldly declares war on Luxembourg, a not-so-subtle jab at the Bush administration’s decision to go to war. By the way, their album “Castaways and Cutouts” probably looks familiar to most people in the BitTorrent community. The Decemberists Albums: Ranked from Worst to Best.

  • Indie Classical and American New Music in the Twenty-First Century
A SCENE WITHOUT A NAME: INDIE CLASSICAL AND AMERICAN NEW MUSIC IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY William Robin A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music. Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Mark Katz Andrea Bohlman Mark Evan Bonds Tim Carter Benjamin Piekut © 2016 William Robin ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT WILLIAM ROBIN: A Scene Without a Name: Indie Classical and American New Music in the Twenty-First Century (Under the direction of Mark Katz) This dissertation represents the first study of indie classical, a significant subset of new music in the twenty-first century United States. The definition of “indie classical” has been a point of controversy among musicians: I thus examine the phrase in its multiplicity, providing a framework to understand its many meanings and practices. Indie classical offers a lens through which to study the social: the web of relations through which new music is structured, comprised in a heterogeneous array of actors, from composers and performers to journalists and publicists to blog posts and music venues. This study reveals the mechanisms through which a musical movement establishes itself in American cultural life; demonstrates how intermediaries such as performers, administrators, critics, and publicists fundamentally shape artistic discourses; and offers a model for analyzing institutional identity and understanding the essential role of institutions in new music. Three chapters each consider indie classical through a different set of practices: as a young generation of musicians that constructed itself in shared institutional backgrounds and performative acts of grouping; as an identity for New Amsterdam Records that powerfully shaped the record label’s music and its dissemination; and as a collaboration between the ensemble yMusic and Duke University that sheds light on the twenty-first century status of the new-music ensemble and the composition PhD program.

The claves, or cylindrical pieces of hard wood, used here were selected for their particular pitches (A, B, C-sharp, D-sharp, and D-sharp an octave above), and for their resonant timbre. This piece is one of the loudest I have ever composed, but uses no amplification whatsoever. The rhythmic structure is based entirely on the process of rhythmic “build-ups” or the substitution of beats for rests, and 6 4 3 is in three sections of decreasing pattern length: /4, /4, /4.
