WEDNESDAY 7 APRIL 2010 ________________ Present Bonham-Carter of Yarnbury, B Fowler, L (Chairman) Gordon of Strathblane, L Howe of Idlicote, B Inglewood, L King of Bridgwater, L Maxton, L McIntosh of Hudnall, B St John of Bletso, L ________________ Witnesses: Mr John Tate, Director of Policy and Strategy, and Mr Peter Salmon, Director of BBC North, BBC, examined. Q1 Chairman: Good morning. Thank you very much for coming in at short notice. You will notice, of course, that this Select Committee is working up to the very last possible moment before Parliament dissolves. What we really want to do is to look at the BBC Strategy Review. Obviously, we cannot do a full report on it before the Election, but it would be a pity if it slipped through unquestioned, and so we would like to explore with you some of the questions which seem to us to be involved. Just set out for me the process. The process, as I understand it, is that the BBC Executive have put forward proposals at the request of the BBC Trust. When did the BBC Trust ask for those proposals, and why? Mr Tate: The process was initiated in June of last year by the Trust requesting proposals from the Executive and it was agreed between the Chairman and the Director General that we would formulate and propose those proposals, which we have done in the form of the Strategy Review. The Charter is very clear that it is the job of the Trust to approve overall the strategy for the BBC and we are, therefore, to propose that strategy as the Executive.

  • Salmon Chronicles
SALMON CHRONICLES BY H. J. D. SALMON PRIVATELY PRINTED SALMON CHRONICLES has been designed and printed by John Gartner at The Hawthorn Press in an edition limited to 100 copies and the type distributed. Preface These Chronicles, re-written from my original notes, are arranged as far as I could do so, showing each man in the county in which he or his ancestors resided or held land. Many of the records are vague and useless, but were copied when found in case further particulars might afterwards be discovered. The number of different variants of the name is very re markable, but it is very doubtful whether many that have been included herein are related at all. When surnames were first used and for many years after wards the spelling of the names was certainly not regarded as a matter of vital importance, and one frequently finds the same man's name spelt in many different ways, and brothers with their surnames spelt differently ; as in the case of Robert Selyman (Seleman) KT of Wilts, Dorset etc. (CA1297-1350) and Roger Saloman (Saleman) KT of Surrey and Sussex (died 1343). Later the sons of both these men often appear in the State Records with their names spelt in various ways, but ultimately almost always Salman or Salmon. Patent rolls of September 1379 and February 1381 provide "protection for one year for Roger Selyman alias Sele man alias Selman, going to Ireland on the King's Service." Showing clearly that the name might be spelt in various ways. These Chronicles have been collected over a long period.

  • BBC Puts Accent on North a Keynote Lecture by Peter Salmon Director
Can You Hear It? BBC puts Accent on North A keynote lecture by Peter Salmon Director, BBC North Good evening. It is good to be in Sunderland — home to the fastest counters in the country, as we all saw on Election night. All the drama that opening the ballot boxes has resulted in started right here. Amazing to think that 40 million people watched some of that remarkable Election Campaign on the BBC. I don’t think I can beat that drama tonight — nor can I match the excitement of the new Dr Who’s appearance here a few weeks ago for an exclusive screening of the first episode of the new series for local children - but I do hope I can give you a sense of some of the change already underway in the BBC that I hope will have a growing impact on your lives over the next few years. I’d like to thank Graeme and the RTS in the North East for inviting me and providing this chance to talk to you about our big move North next year and the opportunities it can create for programme making here in the Northeast. I’d ask your forgiveness in advance if I talk about The North as though it were a single place as opposed to a whole series of great cities and towns and regions of England. As I hope to explain today though, I do think there is much that binds us together — not as little northerners, reduced to settling for second best, but citizens of the greater north, unified in ambition and confidence.

  • OPEN LETTER to the CHANCELLOR, RISHI SUNAK The
OPEN LETTER TO THE CHANCELLOR, RISHI SUNAK The Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP Chancellor of the Exchequer HM Treasury 1 Horse Guards Road London SW1A 2HQ 24th March 2020 Dear Chancellor, We’re aware of the extraordinary pressure you’re under in these unprecedented times. And we are grateful – as employers – for the measures you’ve already taken to help companies like ours weather the storm and protect staff jobs. But we’re writing to ask you to do more to extend that protection to the part of our workforce who find themselves uniquely vulnerable in this moment: freelancers and the self-employed. In our industry – television – freelancers make up a huge proportion of the people we work with. British television’s global success and reputation would be utterly impossible without them. These are not optional or peripheral roles, but some of the most important jobs and some of the most talented people in the sector. And yet at a time when so much production has come to a halt simultaneously, they find themselves suddenly without work and almost entirely excluded from the protective measures that cover their peers. Many are facing real economic distress and personal hardship at an already deeply unsettling time. Swift measures to bring financial aid to those who have lost income are vital – both on a human level and to ensure that this part of the country’s creative industries stands a chance of recovery once the crisis has passed. We’re aware that we are among many making this argument on behalf of the self-employed, and we note the comments of your ministerial colleagues about your willingness to keep reviewing the situation and see if there are further steps you can take.
