FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER IN THIS ISSUE ANDREA KNOX

You know it’s getting to be late summer in Florida when we start SWINGING SUNDAY seeing multiple low pressure weather systems working their way off the coast of Africa and their potential tracks westward. We certainly got lucky RESULTS with Isaias after all the watching and waiting. It may have just been one of the brief wind gusts, but I’m pretty sure I heard a collective sigh of relief when Isaias weakened and started tracking off the coastline of Florida. Let’s hope we continue getting lucky 2020-2021 like that in the future. TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE How great is it to be watching the pro’s playing LIVE again! AUGUST 2020

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT TJ WEST July had a wet start and wet end with very little rain in the middle. However, we recorded 10.5” of rainfall during the month. The lakes are definitely looking more normal and the turf is loving the added moisture. The aerification of greens on July 19th and 20th went very well. We were a little more aggressive this time then we were in May. We used a new style tine that is designed to leave a small hole, but remove more material. During those two days we were also able to aggressively verticut and topdress greens after they were punched. Our next scheduled greens aerification is on August 23rd and 24th. On Monday July 27th we verticut collars two directions. The collars had become heavy with thatch due to the added moisture from Mother Nature. From this point forward we will be on an alternating week schedule of verticutting greens then collars. With the above average rainfall we have been forced to apply a Plant Growth Regulator, Primo, to tees and fairways. This is a normal practice during the growing season. However, this summer we are applying the product at a much shorter interval. The application of Primo is also lessening our clipping yield which allows us to do other tasks besides blowing clippings. Nothing right now seems to be ideal and creativity is key. Through the hard work of the five full time employees, one part time employee and a little of myself…we are making due! I am proud of what these gentleman are accomplishing on the course! It is far from where we want it to be and the list of things in my head that we accomplish at times is overwhelming. BUT, we will get there! For question or comments I can be reached by email [email protected].

AUGUST 2020

FROM THE MGA MIKE ROWLANDS

The MGA has had a successful return from our “COVID vacation”, having now played for the past several weeks. We continue to practice appropriate social distancing operating individual carts and following the guidelines employed by the club. While we are all managing during this pandemic, the fact that we can still play golf and see our friends, albeit at a distance, is a blessing.

Our summer “Boys of Summer” Tournament is scheduled for August 12 and August 19. Lunch will be provided after play on August 19 and will consist of a plated dinner (due to COVID). While we are still finalizing the menu for the lunch, suffice it to say ifwill not consist of hamburgers and hot dogs this year! We believe you will enjoy lunch when you attend. If you want to play and have not signed up, please do so in the clubhouse before August 5 at 5;00 PM. We would love to have you!

One of the big complaints we hear from both MGA and non-MGA members is pace of play. We have instituted a “weekly reminder” to our participants designed to see and understand ways to individually speed up play of their group. Examples include (1) going to you ball and preparing to play your next shot, (2) “ready” golf, (3) placing clubs back in the bag and scoring on the next tee, etc. The best method I have found is to “mentor” the offending player to assist him in speed of play. If the faster players are consistently being held up, play a round with the offender and help him. You may actually make or renew a friendship. It has worked for me.

The MGA is constantly looking for ways to improve the quality of play in the league; we have asked numerous people on suggestions for “King for a Day” improvements. If we have not asked you personally, reach out to any of us. Any of the members will put you contact with either myself or another Board member. Please share your ideas with us.

As of August 1, 2020, all new male members who join Grand Haven Golf Club this year will be given a complimentary MGA membership for the balance of the year which ends June 30 next year. We believe that new members looking for tee times and new friends have a fairly unlimited supply through the MGA. If you are new to the club, I encourage you to plan to play with us on Wednesday mornings and see for yourself.

FROM THE HANDICAP COMMITTEE BILL BOYER

Handicap auditing has resumed in July and so I thought it important to revisit a few key points.  If you are playing a practice round or just having fun with your spouse you need to let the pro shop that it is not a “real” round. They log these and so will not be subject to an audit. Failure to do so will result in you getting a score posted for you should an audit fall on that date.  If playing as a single, you are not subject to an audit. You need to tell the pro shop but we tend to catch players playing as singles from the starters sheet. To be safe, let the pro shop know.  Please post on the day played. If you post the next day be sure to put the correct date down for your score, not the date posted but the day played. This is a common and big mistake.  If you fail to put on a day audited the best score of your past twenty will be entered for you. We do not call you to remind you that you missed a posting.  It is important to remember that the 2020 handicap system has a maximum number you can take by hole. A par four will vary by hole how many strokes are allowed. There is no set number. For some it could be a maximum of six and the next par four seven. It varies, by your handicap and the holes difficulty. It’s always par plus two plus the number of strokes your handicap allows for that hole. So, the audits are back and so far it’s not been very pretty. We are seeing a lot of incorrect or non-postings. Getting your best score entered for you because you didn’t post sure can lower that handicap quickly. I’d hate to see you lose a tournament or several friendly wagers because of mistakes that impact your handicap. Count them correctly and get the total in promptly!

AUGUST 2020

FROM THE WGA SARA LOCKHART

The summer doldrums were livened up when Kaye Boyer Ryan aced the 14th hole on July 7th! She hit a seven iron to a middle pin. She shot a 43 on the front 9 and a 39 on the back 9 for an 82. We were able to celebrated the event with her while social distancing. Congratulations, Kaye!

As I write this, Opening Day is only seven weeks away! Despite current constraints, the WGA is in great shape for a fun filled year because of you, the members. You renewed your dues quickly which allowed Linda Kantakevicius to draft a budget for 2020-2021 that will be presented, possibly electronically, by opening day. Tournament Committee Chairwoman Joan Callahan, along with Pat Smith, planned our Tuesday games for the entire 2020-2021 season. Joan also secured dates for WPC, and BJ Mott and Amy Lamb have done so for Seagals. Rules Chairwoman Lynn Lefler programmed our Tuesday games into Golf Genius on behalf of the Pro Shop. Membership Chairwoman Pat Golomb has kept track of, and communicated with the Board, membership changes through the summer. She also provided Club Membership Director Ron Snider with a welcoming letter encouraging new members to play with the WGA and shared with the Board ideas on how to make people feel welcome (more on that, later!). Four women have joined since the start of last year, so their names will appear in the annual membership booklet prepared by Sandy Pearson. The next newsletter will recognize them individually as our ability to meet as a group is curtailed. Speaking of the booklet, you may notice a few tweaks from previous years. Thank you, Sandy, for your patience!

If you haven't participated in Club events this summer, tee times and individual carts are still the protocol. To keep connected while our socialization is limited after golf, we're posting more information on the website, http://ghwga.org/ . Tuesday results are available there by Wednesday morning (don't assume you DID NOT win!), pictures of members who have passed away have been posted under the In Memorium tab and a Past Presidents page, including pictures and dates, is under construction (we'll use the picture you provided, Kenny!). Thank you, Sheila Tebbano and Ann Ducasse, for your efforts.

The Grand Haven Women's Golf Association was founded in 1998 with just six members. In the 22 years since its inception, there have been twelve presidents. Nine still live in Grand Haven and seven are still members.
