While their indexical link to the reality they address grants images and sounds a specific credibility, the position of the artist, her aesthetic, thematic and political choices and self-reflexive stance, may generate a critical assessment of the very constitution of reality. At such a point, art meets philosophy. In order to reflect on the relationship between the factual world and its subjective appropriation, questioning hegemonic claims to objectivity and problematising the inherent contradictions of society are inherently philosophical issues. Problematising reality – Encounters between art, cinema and philosophy is a series of screenings and discussions, in a partnership between IFILNOVA (CineLab) / FCSH / UNL, Goethe-Institut and Maumaus / Lumiar Cité and in collaboration with Apordoc / Doc’s Kingdom. These encounters between artists and researchers of international renown focus on the very moments where art, cinema and philosophy enter into a productive dialogue. The seventh and last edition of this series of conversations and screenings brings together the New York-based artist Judith Barry and the philosopher Giovanbattista Tusa, who will discuss Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s feature film Veronika Voss (Die Sehnsucht der Veronika Voss, 1982), the third episode of Fassbinder’s trilogy on Post-War West Germany, following after The Marriage of Maria Braun (1978) and Lola (1981). -

PRESS RELEASE WHAT: Werner Fassbinder Retrospective WHEN: March 10 to April 22, 2018 WHERE: Ili Likha Artists Village in Baguio and Cinematheque Centre Manila “Rainer Werner Fassbinder: A Retrospective” IN PARTNERSHIP WITH: This summer, the Goethe-Institut Philippinen presents some of the best works of the well-acclaimed German filmmaker, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, in a retrospective exhibition that's free for all. Eleven Fassbinder films including a documentary about him will be screened for free every weekends from March 10 to April 1 at the Ili Likha Artists Village in Baguio and April 7 to April 22 at the Cinematheque Centre Manila. On the opening day at Ili Likha Artists Village this March 10, a small reception will be held at 4pm before the first screening. Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1945–82) is one of the most polarizing and influential figures of the New German Cinema. He is famously known for his short-lived yet exceptional and remarkable career that lasted for nearly 16 years until his death in 1982. Fassbinder's artistic productivity resulted in a legacy of 39 films, 6 TV movies, 3 shorts, 4 video productions, 24 stage plays, and 4 radio plays. On top of that, he was also an actor, dramatist, cameraman, composer, designer, editor, producer, and theatre manager for some of his films and productions, yet he managed to combine all of it into a comprehensive, always expanding, retrospective, and progressive unity. Fassbinder's films encompasses everything from intense social melodramas, Hollywood inspired female-driven tearjerkers, epic period pieces, to dystopic science fiction as well. -

In this paper we consider the problem of measuring the productivity of team members. We propose a new concept of coworker productivity, which we refer to as eigenvalue productivity (EVP). We demonstrate the existence and uniqueness of our concept and show that it possesses several desirable properties. Also, we suggest a procedure for specifying the required productivity matrix of a team, and illustrate the operational practicability of EVP by means of three examples representing different types of the available data. FALL 1990 121 Rainer Werner Fassbinder and the Politics of Simulation: Two Plays Erik MacDonald Rainer Werner Fassbinder's plays represent an important intersection between political and philosophical textual mechanisms, including character, narrativity, and context. Although he is best known in the United States for his films, Fassbinder began his artistic career working in the theatre. Over the course of ten years, he wrote approximately ten plays (five of which have been translated into English), directed numerous productions, and served briefly as the artistic director for Frankfurt's Theater am Turm. Unlike other German playwrights such as Peter Handke, Heiner Muller, or Peter Weiss, Fassbinder's plays have not been given major productions in the United States. However, his obscurity in this country should not be used to underestimate or dismiss his work, for his plays advance an important form of textuality, one that incorporates a historical understanding with a theoretical analysis of such mechanisms as narrative, character development, closure and the teleological project of Western drama. Furthermore, in this case neither history nor theory act as appendages to an already formed textuality, but both anticipate and are anticipated by Fassbinder's literary and philosophical modes. In order to "unravel" his texts then, it is necessary to read them alongside certain theoretical texts, as well as in their historical context-namely, the post-World War Two Federal Republic of Germany. Connected to his philosophical project is Fassbinder's political agenda. Whereas the aesthetics of capitalism and liberal humanism comport a seemingly benign social order, Fassbinder's plays reveal a form of fascism lurking not far beneath the surface.
