  • BOSTON BRUINS QUOTES HOCKEY HALL of FAME INDUCTION Monday, June 26, 2017
BOSTON BRUINS QUOTES HOCKEY HALL OF FAME INDUCTION Monday, June 26, 2017 BOSTON BRUINS OWNER JEREMY JACOBS Opening statement… Thank you very, very much. This was a total surprise. I am humbled and I am very appreciative because I know a lot of the people preceded me in here are good friends. Who comes to mind first is Harley Hodgson, who was somebody that I followed in the leadership of the NHL and it’s just a wonderful group. You flatter me very much by including me in it. With that, I thank you. On being the owner of Boston and a native of Buffalo and how that has helped him during his time in the NHL… Well, I actually started in Buffalo with the Sabres when they first became a team back in, I think it was 1970-71. I got a lot of background with the Knox’s and … and those originators of the team. So, when I purchased the Bruins back in 1975, I had a background and a base to work with. So, it was very important. Plus, I continued to have the fan base that exists in these two cities. It’s incredible. I think Boston is definitely number one, but Buffalo is a close second to it. So, in my mind, it’s a great base to come from. On what he sees as his legacy in the NHL… I think the length of my ownership perhaps plays a role in this. But, my continued participation in the league at the league level, it did come as unexpected.

  • 2019 Hockey Hall of Fame Nhl Media Award Recipients Announced
2019 HOCKEY HALL OF FAME NHL MEDIA AWARD RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED TORONTO (May 28, 2019) - Mark Spector, President of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association, and Chuck Kaiton, President of the NHL Broadcasters’ Association, announced today that Frank Brown will receive the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award for excellence in hockey journalism, and Jim Hughson will receive the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for outstanding contributions as a hockey broadcaster. Frank Brown’s professional writing career began in 1970, at the age of 18, when his first story appeared in a New York Rangers game-night program. Brown spent seven seasons as the principle hockey voice for The Associated Press during which he covered the Miracle On Ice and the dynasty years of the Montreal Canadiens. He joined The New York Daily News from 1980 – 1998 covering all three NHL teams, including Stanley Cup Championships by each. Brown retired in 2018 after spending the final two decades of his career as a communications executive with the NHL. "As a writer, Frank was that rare mix of story breaker and story teller,” said Spector. “He stayed true to his tabloid roots with punchy prose, scoops and leads that reminded you that you were reading the New York Daily News. But in his time covering literally every important story between the Islanders dynasty and the Rangers win in '94, he also told hockey's stories exceptionally well.” Jim Hughson began broadcasting hockey games in the South Peace Hockey League in his hometown of Fort St John, B.C. Those games led to a 30-year career, calling games on radio and TV at every level.

  • THE CANCELLED CUP the Spanish Flu in the 1918-1919 Hockey Season Eric Zweig
DefiningMomentsCanada.ca THE CANCELLED CUP The Spanish Flu in the 1918-1919 Hockey Season Eric Zweig he Montreal Canadiens faced elimination on March 29, 1919. After four games in their best-of-five series Twith the Seattle Metropolitans, Montreal had only one win. Seattle had two. The fourth game ended in a 0–0 tie after 20 minutes of overtime. The Canadiens had to win game five to stay alive. If they did, they’d force one more game – a sudden-death sixth game for the Stanley Cup. The Canadiens needed a victory, but the Metropolitans came out flying. Seattle’s Frank Foyston got the first goal at 5:40 of the first period, and the Canadiens were down 2–0 by intermission. It was 3–0 Seattle after two periods, but Montreal fought back. They tied the game late in the third and won it 4–3 after nearly 16 minutes of overtime. Game six to decide the Stanley Cup was scheduled for April 1, 1919, but the long games were taking a toll. Players on both teams were injured and exhausted. Still, there wasn’t much cause for concern. No one suspected the real problem. These fierce competitors weren’t just tired, they were sick – and the consequences would be deadly. Frank Foyston The game of hockey looked very different a century ago. The arenas were more compact and darker. The players wore little protective equipment, and they were smaller, averaging only about 5-foot-9 (175 cm) and 160 pounds (72.5 kg). Even so, the best ones played close to 60 minutes a game.
