The Hockey Hall of Fame was established in 1943 under the leadership of James T. Sutherland, a former President of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA). The Hall of Fame was established as a joint venture between the NHL and the CAHA in Kingston, Ontario, considered by Sutherland to be the birthplace of hockey. Originally called the ”International Hockey Hall of Fame”, its mandate was to honour great hockey players and to raise funds for a permanent location. The first eleven honoured members were inducted on April 30, 1945.[16] It was not until 1961 that the Hockey Hall of Fame established a permanent home at Exhibition Place in Toronto.[17] The first official All-Star Game took place at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto on October 13, 1947 to raise money for the newly created NHL Pension Society. The NHL All-Stars defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 4V3 and raised C$25,000 for the pension fund. The All-Star Game has since become an annual tradition.[18] III. CONCLUSION The conclusion goes here. • The Montreal Forum: the Final Season?
Palimpsest III: The Dialectics of Montreal’s Public Spaces Department of Art History, Concordia University The Montreal Forum: The Final Season? Rob Coles September 2010 Cynthia I. Hammond, ed. Palimpsest III: The Dialectics of Montreal’s Public Spaces Coles 1 As a site of identity for the multiple affiliations of the people of Montreal, the Montreal Forum represents much more than a hockey arena. Between 1924 and 1996, the Forum hosted thousands of events, from professional hockey, to rock concerts, circus performances, religious gatherings, professional wrestling and events of the 1976 Summer Olympics. In 1996 the Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club, the main occupants of the site, moved from the Forum to the Molson (now Bell) Centre. After the departure of the Canadiens was announced, many Montreal residents feared that the Forum would be destroyed. A huge public outcry to save the building ensued. The Forum was ultimately saved and transformed into an entertainment complex called the Pepsi Forum that incorporated some memorabilia from the site’s history into its design. With this attempt to keep the local affect of the Forum alive in mind, this essay asks why so many were opposed to the demolition of the Forum? Was the adaptive re-use of the Forum successful in capturing the essential and important aspects of the building for its fans? The Montreal Forum was a key site of expression and identity in Montreal not only for supporters of the Canadiens hockey team. For the city’s francophone population and fans of popular music, the Forum was also important. As this essay demonstrates, while the Pepsi Forum includes memorabilia in its interior design, important connections between the Forum and the rise of Quebec nationalism are only summarily represented, as is the impact of the Forum as a key music venue in Montreal; the “Forum Gallery”, a small museum located on the second floor of the building, is out of the view and spatial experience of most visitors today.

Portail de l'éducation de Historica Canada Canada's Game - The Modern Era Overview This lesson plan is based on viewing the Footprints videos for Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr, Father David Bauer, Bobby Hull,Wayne Gretzky, and The Forum. Throughout hockey's history, though they are not presented in the Footprints, francophone players like Guy Lafleur, Mario Lemieux, Raymond Bourque, Jacques Lemaire, and Patrick Roy also made a significant contribution to the sport. Parents still watch their children skate around cold arenas before the sun is up and backyard rinks remain national landmarks. But hockey is no longer just Canada's game. Now played in cities better known for their golf courses than their ice rinks, hockey is an international game. Hockey superstars and hallowed ice rinks became national icons as the game matured and Canadians negotiated their role in the modern era. Aims To increase student awareness of the development of the game of hockey in Canada; to increase student recognition of the contributions made by hockey players as innovators and their contributions to the game; to examine their accomplishments in their historical context; to explore how hockey has evolved into the modern game; to understand the role of memory and commemoration in our understanding of the past and present; and to critically investigate myth-making as a way of understanding the game’s relationship to national identity. Background Frozen fans huddled in the open air and helmet-less players battled for the puck in a -28 degree Celsius wind chill. The festive celebration was the second-ever outdoor National Hockey League game, held on 22 November 2003.
