Bob’s Bible Bits

I was listening to a rebroadcast of an interview with Chuck Colson, former Whitehouse special counsel for Richard Nixon. Chuck was converted to Christ shortly before he was sentenced to prison for his part in the Watergate scandal. His incarceration led him to begin a Christian Ministry called Prison Fellowship. He was appalled by the conditions inside the prison system and vowed to do what he could to introduce inmates to Jesus Christ in an effort to help them turn their lives around. On one occasion, with the help of many volunteers, he organized a program to provide Mother’s Day cards to prisoners so they could honor these special women. The idea was so popular that cards had to be ordered on three different occasions to fill the many requests. Over 1500 inmates were blessed by the thoughtfulness of Prison Fellowship. Because of its popularity, when Father’s Day rolled around, they decided to offer the same opportunity. To the surprise of the Prison Fellowship staff, not one card was requested. This alarming fact pointed to a serious disconnect between men in prison and their earthly fathers.

The Bible has much to say to fathers about their role in the family. The Greek noun used in almost all occurrences is “pater.” The root of this word signifies a “nourisher,” “protector,” “upholder.” For those of you who are fathers or plan to be fathers, check out your expectations of your role with these descriptors. In the Old Testament the Hebrew word is “ab,” meaning he who represents the family relationship. Provers 17:6 says, “Grandchildren are the crown (delight) of old men. And the glory of sons is their father.” When Jesus is praying in the garden he uses a transliteration of the Hebrew word, “Abba,” or “Daddy,” when He is requesting that the cup of suffering be removed, but goes on to say, “not my will, but Thy will be done” (Mark 14: 36). We find another interesting use of “pater” in Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, here describing a spiritual relationship, “…in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. I exhort you therefore, be imitators of me. (1Cor. 15b-16)

Paul also instructs the Ephesians. After reminding them of the 5th commandment, “honor your father and mother,” he goes on to say, “fathers, do not provoke your children to anger; but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” (Eph. 6: 4). John in his first epistle gives this strong exhortation, “I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong and the Word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one” (1 John 2:14).

Near the middle of this month, June 20th to be exact, we will be celebrating Father’s Day. For those of us whose fathers have gone on to be with the Lord, hopefully, we will be honoring the part of them that has made us who we are. If your relationship with your father could use some repairing, what a great time to put differences aside and follow God’s command to bring honor to the one who, along with our mothers, made our earthly existence possible.

If any of you fathers have seen something in this article that reminded you that you could be doing a better job as the Spiritual head of your family, I pray you will read these verses for yourself in your own Bible, mark them in some way, and go back and reread them often, allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart. I promise you, this will be a blessing to you, to your family, and especially to your children.

Have a blessed June and a very blessed Father’s Day!

Pastor Bob

DID YOU KNOW ...... May 2021

LABELS FOR JACK MCCLAIN

Jack McClain is a Centenarian, both because he is a member of Centenary UMC and because he was born in 1921. Jack McClain, a stalwart of the 8:00 service at Centenary, celebrated achieving 100 years of age on May 25, 2021 with a Sunday afternoon celebration attended by many friends and family. Jack’s aunt, Elizabeth Davis, also a centenarian, was a member of Centenary UMC and lived to the age of 103.

Other labels we can give Jack include Clockmaker and Woodworker as he made five wooden clock cases found around Centenary including those in the Mary Martha room, the Fellowship Hall and the kitchen. Jack has been generous with products of his woodworking.

Jack earned a label as a Sunday School Teacher, teaching the 6th grade class in the balcony of the church (removed during the 2003 sanctuary renovation). Their class instituted a tradition of pulling the bell rope to ring the bell to start each session. As a substitute Santa Claus at the children’s Christmas party Jack provided a memorable moment when Phyllis Weaver sat on Santa’s lap and both collapsed on the floor as the chair collapsed. Jack was teaching Junior High Sunday School at the same time his second wife, Jeanne, was teaching the high school class that met in the kitchen.

Jack earns the label of Helper as he and his wife, Jeanne, delivered Meals on Wheels for almost a decade. They also assisted many elderly friends navigate through their later years.

Jack was also an Engineer, having graduated from Case Western Reserve University. He worked at Owens Corning Technical Center; Holophane, Newark; AT & T, Columbus and Newark Air Force Station.

The Marathoner label is one Jack earned by running in 4 triathlons, many half-marathons and 49 marathons including 3 international marathons. He started running in 1975 at age 56 when he ran in the Granville Firecracker Five and he last ran a full marathon at age 90 (Columbus Marathon). He also earned the title of Torchbearer when he was chosen to carry the Olympic torch while running in Columbus.

Jack is a Veteran having served in the U.S. Navy. During the time he was stationed in Texas he met Fyrne Morrison who became his first wife.

We can place a label of Musician on Jack based on the time he played bass and was a Marimba player with Ruth Jeanne’s Marimba group at Centenary.

Earning the label of Cyclist, Jack has a passion for bicycle riding. He rode in more than 20 Great Ohio Bike Adventures and Tours of the Scioto River Valley. In addition he made two cross-country bicycle trips and biked across Florida and .

We at Centenary are fortunate that Jack set aside the label of ‘Presbyterian’ and took on the label of ‘Centenarian’ (Methodist) in 1946. Quoting Jack’s comments in his reflections of Centenary UMC in 2003 “the most important personal experiences of my life have been associated with our church: To name

6 some, spiritual training of our children*, funeral service of my wife in 1973, enjoying support and friendship during good and tough times, marriage to Jeanne following the Christmas Service in the church in 1975 by Don Collins. I am every grateful for church values in my life.”

Jack’s second wife, Jeanne Gordon McClain died in January 2021 and her funeral service was live- streamed from the Centenary sanctuary and viewed by their many friends and family.

*The children Jack says received spiritual training were Craig, son of Jack and Fyrne McClain; Nancy and Jerry, daughter and son of Jeanne Gordon McClain.
