Gibbons1, Yan Gu1, and Julian Shun3 1 Carnegie Mellon University 2 Georgetown University 3 University of California, Berkeley Abstract In several emerging technologies for computer memory (main memory), the cost of reading is significantly cheaper than the cost of writing. Such asymmetry in memory costs poses a fun- damentally different model from the RAM for algorithm design. In this paper we study lower and upper bounds for various problems under such asymmetric read and write costs. We con- sider both the case in which all but O(1) memory has asymmetric cost, and the case of a small cache of symmetric memory. We model both cases using the (M, ω)-ARAM, in which there is a small (symmetric) memory of size M and a large unbounded (asymmetric) memory, both random access, and where reading from the large memory has unit cost, but writing has cost ω 1. For FFT and sorting networks we show a lower bound cost of Ω(ωn logωM n), which indicates that it is not possible to achieve asymptotic improvements with cheaper reads when ω is bounded by a polynomial in M. Moreover, there is an asymptotic gap (of min(ω, log n)/ log(ωM)) between the cost of sorting networks and comparison sorting in the model. This contrasts with the RAM, and most other models, in which the asymptotic costs are the same. We also show a lower bound for computations on an n × n diamond DAG of Ω(ωn2/M) cost, which indicates no asymptotic improvement is achievable with fast reads. -

MY UNFORGETTABLE EARLY YEARS AT THE INSTITUTE Enstitüde Unutulmaz Erken Yıllarım Dinakar Ramakrishnan `And what was it like,’ I asked him, `meeting Eliot?’ `When he looked at you,’ he said, `it was like standing on a quay, watching the prow of the Queen Mary come towards you, very slowly.’ – from `Stern’ by Seamus Heaney in memory of Ted Hughes, about the time he met T.S.Eliot It was a fortunate stroke of serendipity for me to have been at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, twice during the nineteen eighties, first as a Post-doctoral member in 1982-83, and later as a Sloan Fellow in the Fall of 1986. I had the privilege of getting to know Robert Langlands at that time, and, needless to say, he has had a larger than life influence on me. It wasn’t like two ships passing in the night, but more like a rowboat feeling the waves of an oncoming ship. Langlands and I did not have many conversations, but each time we did, he would make a Zen like remark which took me a long time, at times months (or even years), to comprehend. Once or twice it even looked like he was commenting not on the question I posed, but on a tangential one; however, after much reflection, it became apparent that what he had said had an interesting bearing on what I had been wondering about, and it always provided a new take, at least to me, on the matter. Most importantly, to a beginner in the field like I was then, he was generous to a fault, always willing, whenever asked, to explain the subtle aspects of his own work. -

Smith Chairman, Departmental Committee on Graduate Students Abstract In the past several years, there has been a surge of interest in computational learning theory-the formal (as opposed to empirical) study of learning algorithms. One major cause for this interest was the model of probably approximately correct learning, or pac learning, introduced by Valiant in 1984. This thesis begins by presenting a new learning algorithm for a particular problem within that model: learning submodules of the free Z-module Zk. We prove that this algorithm achieves probable approximate correctness, and indeed, that it is within a log log factor of optimal in a related, but more stringent model of learning, on-line mistake bounded learning. We then proceed to examine the influence of noisy data on pac learning algorithms in general. Previously it has been shown that it is possible to tolerate large amounts of random classification noise, but only a very small amount of a very malicious sort of noise. -

KENNETH A. ROSS JANUARY 8, 2011 AND JANUARY 5, 2012 (Interviewed by T. Christine Stevens) How did you get involved in the MAA? As a good citizen of the mathematical community, I was a member of MAA from the beginning of my career. But I worked in an “AMS culture,” so I wasn’t actively involved in the MAA. As of January, 1983, I had never served on an MAA committee. But I had been Associate Secretary of the AMS from 1971 to 1981, and thus Len Gillman (who was MAA Treasurer at the time) asked me to be MAA Secretary. There was a strong contrast between the cultures of the AMS and the MAA, and my first two years were very hard. Did you receive mentoring in the MAA at the early stages of your career? From whom? As a graduate student at the University of Washington, I hadn’t even been aware that the department chairman, Carl Allendoerfer, was serving at the time as MAA President. My first mentor in the MAA was Len Gillman, who got me involved with the MAA. Being Secretary and Treasurer, respectively, we consulted a lot, and he was the one who helped me learn the MAA culture. One confession: At that time, approvals for new unbudgeted expenses under $500 were handled by the Secretary, the Treasurer and the Executive Director, Al Wilcox. The requests usually came to me first. Since Len was consistently tough, and Al was a push-over, I would first ask the one whose answer would agree with mine, and then with a 2-0 vote, I didn’t have to even bother the other one. -

It does not deliver new facts and figures, but instead provides a new perspective on the existential risks associated with anthropogenic global warming. It is the critical overview of well-informed intellectuals who sit outside the climate-science community which has developed over the last fifty years. All such expert communities are prone to what the French call deformation professionelle and the German betriebsblindheit. Expressed in plain English, experts tend to establish a peer world-view which becomes ever more rigid and focussed. Welcome to ICM 2006, the 25th International Congress of Mathematicians, and the first ICM to be held in Spain. We offer our heartfelt thanks to the Spanish nation, so rich in history and culture, for its invitation to Madrid. We greatly appreciate that His Majesty King Juan Carlos is honouring mathematics by His presence here today. While celebrating this feast of mathematics, with the many talking-points that it will provide, it is worth reflecting on the ways in which our community functions. Mathematics is a profession of high standards and integrity. We freely discuss our work with others without fear of it being stolen, and research is communicated openly prior to formal publication. Editorial procedures are fair and proper, and work gains its reputation through merit and not by how it is promoted. These are the norms operated by the vast majority of mathematicians. The exceptions are rare, and they are noticed. Mathematics has a strong record of service, freely given. We see this in the time and care spent in the refereeing of papers and other forms of peer review. We see it in the running of mathematical societies and journals, in the provision of free mathematical software and teaching resources, and in the various projects world-wide to improve electronic access to the mathematical literature, old and new. We see it in the nurturing of students beyond the call of duty. -
