A MEMBER MAGAZINE from the DIRECTOR This Spring, Beauty Is in Bloom Across the Mcnay’S Growing 25-Acre Campus, Indoors and Out January | April 2020 IMPRESSIONS A MEMBER MAGAZINE FROM THE DIRECTOR This spring, beauty is in bloom across the McNay’s growing 25-acre campus, indoors and out. From three new outdoor sculptures to a peek inside the beautiful mind of theatre arts visionary Robert L. B. Tobin, we are redefining the art museum experience and bringing your stories to life through video art, rare Goya prints, fashion, community partnerships, and more. We kick off the year in style with a timely tribute to the 1990s inFashion Nirvana: Runway to Everyday, an immersive installation of video art and garments, all from the influential decade. Recently, the world honored the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which ushered in a new era of hope, freedom, opportunity, and individuality. In response, the 90s became a golden age of culture across the US, defined by innovative video, music, and the fashion of Gianni Versace, Isaac Mizrahi, and Vera Wang. Co-organized with the Texas Fashion Collection at the University of North Texas, Fashion Nirvana brings us back to an iconic time in our recent history and pushes the artistic boundaries of the museum experience along the way. McNay reinvention continues beyond our walls and onto our sprawling outdoor galleries as progress is made on Phase I of our transformative Landscape Master Plan. As we realize the vision of a more open and accessible modern art museum, we create even more opportunities to engage our community through a growing world-renowned collection. As a treasured member of the McNay family, you have supported our continued commitment to innovation, inclusion, and accessibility as we redefine beauty for all South Texans. Thanks to you, more and more San Antonians see themselves and their stories here. Yours most sincerely, Richard Aste Director OUR MISSION The McNay Art Museum engages a diverse community in the discovery and enjoyment of the visual arts. 2 BOARD OF TRUSTEES HOURS As of December 6, 2019 Sunday Noon–5 PM Toby Calvert Monday Closed Tuesday Closed President Wednesday 10 AM–6 PM Thursday 10 AM–9 PM Harmon W. • The Public Theater of San Antonio Executive Artistic Director
The Public Theater of San Antonio Executive Artistic Director San Antonio’s Theater for All Organization The Public Theater of San Antonio (The Public) is San Antonio’s largest producing theater, currently celebrating its 109th consecutive year of production. Its mission is to produce professional live theater that inspires, educates, and connects communities. The Public presents high-quality theatrical productions year-round and is an important artistic leader in the City of San Antonio’s cultural landscape. Its stated goal is to be a ‘Theater for All,’ where residents of San Antonio can all feel welcome in the space and comfortable engaging with the artists and the art. The Public’s direction moving forward is to maintain and improve upon its role as San Antonio’s flagship theater while creating a stronger collaborative and supportive culture, both internally and with the San Antonio community. The Public’s history traces back to 1912 when Sara Barton Bindley, a resident of San Antonio, established the San Antonio Dramatic Club. The early years of the twentieth century saw the emergence of the little theater movement in the United States. As the movement flourished across the nation, civic leaders of San Antonio formally incorporated as the Little Theater Production Company of San Antonio in 1927, updated legally to the San Antonio Little Theatre, Inc. in 1962. During the early years under the direction of Carl Glick, the productions were held across the city in places like the Menger Hotel and Beethoven Hall. The organization’s leadership eventually petitioned the City for a permanent location and on January 22, 1930, the San Pedro Playhouse opened as the first city-built, city- funded theater in the United States.
