Australian Plants Suitable for Tamworth Regional Council Areas Eucalyptus blakelyi Photo Tony Croft Tamworth Group of Australian Plants Society As at July 2007 Eucalyptus blakelyi II TAMWORTH REGIONAL COUNCIL RAINFALL DATA Most of the Tamworth Regional Council area receives an average annual rainfall of 600 to 800mm except for the north- west corner on the Mount Kaputar plateau and the tablelands country from Bendemeer through Woolbrook to Hanging Rock above Nundle which often receives between 800 to 1000mm. Similarly temperatures vary across the region with average annual minimums on the tablelands and nearby areas between 6 and 9 degrees Celsius. A series of frosts are received across the entire region each winter. Average annual maximums are between 18 and 21 degrees on the tablelands, 21 to 24 degrees across most of the region and 24 to 27 degrees in the west of the region. 1. Barraba 2. Biodiversity Summary: Kangaroo Island, South Australia
Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. FIELD GUIDE TO THE Matt Ritter2 CULTIVATED EUCALYPTS (MYRTACEAE) AND HOW TO IDENTIFY THEM1 ABSTRACT This paper provides identification keys that are based entirely on morphological features to commonly and widely cultivated eucalypts, encompassing Eucalyptus L’He´r., Angophora Cav., and Corymbia K. D. Hill & L. A. S. Johnson in the Myrtaceae Juss. The key includes 173 taxa: one species of Angophora, nine species of Corymbia, and 163 species of Eucalyptus. Evidence for cultivation was determined by accounts in the literature, herbaria, personal communications, and observations of living trees in cultivation in Europe, North America, Africa, and Australia. The locations, prevalence of cultivation, and naturalization of several eucalypt species are discussed. Key words: Angophora, Corymbia, eucalypt, Eucalyptus, Myrtaceae. In 1774, at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, years later, two Australian botanists, Kenneth Hill England, the messmate (Eucalyptus obliqua L’He´r.) and Lawrence Johnson, combined two Eucalyptus became the first cultivated eucalypt. Dawson. ill Abstract Experiments prior to this project demonstrated the capacity of the plant growth retardant paclobutrazol to enhance flowering in commercially important Eucalyptus nitens and E. globulus trees and produced anecdotal evidence of this material reducing time to first flowering. Paclobutrazol is known to reduce the levels of endogenous gibberellins (GAs) in several species and hence it was hypothesized that the effects of paclobutrazol on flowering in these Eucalyptus species may be mediated by an effect on GA levels. The lack of previous identification of GAs in this genus necessitated the development of extraction and purification procedures to identify and quantify GAs. The compounds identified suggested that the early 13- hydroxylation pathway was the dominant mechanism for production of GAs, with GA 1 as the likely biologically active compound. Persistence of a paclobutrazol induced increase in flowering of grafted E. nitens material was related to the continued depression of endogenous GA concentrations. Additionally, higher concentrations of GA1 were found to be correlated with reduced flowering responses in this reproductively competent material.
