So let me just quickly introduce them. You have their full biographies. But, as you all know, Judge Starr has been many, many things: a judge on the DC circuit, solicitor general, law school dean — it’s all been downhill after being law school dean — university president, and an independent counsel in the Clinton Whitewater investigation.

  • Inventory of the Scooter Libby Letters
INVENTORY OF THE SCOOTER LIBBY LETTERS I’ve read them, all of them. (Big PDF Part One; Big PDF Part Two; Excel file of all the letters) What a depressing way to spend a weekend day. You see, I believe all those people when they describe how loving Libby is with his kids. And I believe all those people who describe what a great mentor Libby has been to young professionals. But there’s no denying that Libby threw all that away, presumably out of a warped sense of duty. I’m reminded of the two pieces Libby’s childhood friend Nick Bromell has written about him, particularly when he describes, I want to insist that Scooter’s respect for power is not just a front for cold self-interest. At bottom, there’s a kind of innocence about Scooter. He has submitted to masters like Paul Wolfowitz and Cheney because he respects them, just as a Zen novitiate submits to a meditation master or a young violinist reveres the prodigious talent of her teacher. Because in the end, these letters make complete sense. They paint a rich portrait of Libby’s commitment to duty and loyalty. And that, of course, is what got him into trouble. I’ll have one or three posts on individual letters today or tomorrow. But for now, I thought I’d provide my rough inventory of who wrote letters. Total letters: 196 Letters favoring a harsh sentence: 25 Letters favoring a lenient sentence: 171 Letters from obvious Neocons: 34 Letters from OVP affiliates*: 49 Letters from former Dechert colleagues: 15 I didn’t count the number of those whose kids were friends with Libby’s kids, those who play football with Libby, or plain old neighbors.

INTRODUCTION While they may have been immoral, external military operations of past empires often proved profitable and, therefore, justifiable on economic grounds. Military actions abroad usually brought economic benefits not only to the imperial ruling classes, but also (through "trickle-down" effects) to their citizens. This was the case with both pre-capitalist empires of distant past and the capitalist imperial powers of Europe. The United States, too, has often used military power as a means for economic and territorial gains. These included not only the expansion of its territory from the Atlantic to the Pacific, but also the considerable non-territorial economic gains abroad, especially in the immediate aftermath of Word War II. This pattern of economic gains flowing from imperial military operations, however, seems to have somewhat changed in recent years, especially in the post-Cold War era. Moralities aside, U.S. military expeditions and operations of late are not justifiable even on imperialistic economic grounds.

April 1, 2019 Mr. Pat Cipollone Counsel to the President The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, N.W. Washington, D.C. 20002 Dear Mr. Cipollone: On March 1, 2019, I wrote to you in order to request—for a “final time”—that the White House cooperate voluntarily with the Committee’s investigation of security clearance processes at the White House in response to grave breaches of national security at the highest levels of the Trump Administration. My letter followed multiple previous requests for documents and witnesses, which included detailed explanations of the congressional precedents, investigative bases, and legislative purposes of the Committee’s review. In response, the White House has refused to produce a single piece of paper or a single requested witness. Instead, you claim to have “accommodated” the Committee’s interests by providing a 90-minute briefing on general policy matters and an in camera review of a handful of guidance documents. You have refused to provide any information about the specific individuals the Committee is investigating, the specific instances of abuse, wrongdoing, or mistakes we have identified, or the problematic practices of the White House Security Office over the past two years. The Committee has given the White House every possible opportunity to cooperate with this investigation, but you have declined. Your actions are now preventing the Committee from obtaining the information it needs to fulfill its Constitutional responsibilities. Despite White House efforts to obstruct the Committee’s investigation, we have not been idle. Although much of our work over the past several months has been out of public view, the Committee has been active in collecting information from multiple additional sources.
