Match background

An away goal will buoy Getafe CF's ambitions as they go into the home leg of their UEFA Cup Round of 32 tie against AEK Athens FC with the scores level at 1-1.

• A late Ismael Blanco equaliser denied Getafe an away victory in Greece after Rubén de la Red had opened the scoring on 86 minutes – an away goal could which could prove crucial in the return leg in Spain.

• Midfielder Jaime Gavilán will not play in the return fixture after being taken off in the first leg following a clash of heads with AEK's Rodolfo Arruabarrena. He spent the night in an Athens hospital for observation but was released the following morning and allowed to fly home. Gavilán has been signed off for two weeks as a precautionary measure, saying: "I'm lucky to be alive. I would rather not watch the replay of the accident on television. I now see life from a different perspective."

• AEK have now played 17 games against Spanish sides, winning two, drawing five and losing ten. Their eight previous trips to Spain have ended in two draws and six defeats.

• AEK have not won home or away against a Spanish side since beating Athletic Club Bilbao 1-0 at home in the first round of the 1988/89 UEFA Cup.

• Prior to the first leg, Getafe had never met Greek opponents before. In their first season in European competition, the 1-1 result against AEK was their first draw in seven European games.

• The next goal AEK let in will be the 250th they have conceded in UEFA club competition.

• AEK qualified for the Round of 32 by finishing third in Group C. Getafe finished top of Group G.

• AEK dismissed Spanish coach Lorenzo Serra Ferrer the day before the first leg following defeats by Panionios GSS and Larissa FC which saw them drop from first place to third in the Greek Super League. He had been in charge since the summer of 2006.

• Former AEK player Nikolaos Kostenoglou led the Athens side in the first leg. He said: "I respected and will always respect Lorenzo Serra Ferrer, but the important thing right now is to lift team morale ahead of a crucial match."

• Getafe coach scored once in six games against Greek sides as a player. He was in the Denmark side that won 2-0 against Greece at AEK's OACA Spyro Louis Stadium in a 1984 UEFA European Championship qualifier, and subsequently played both legs in Juventus' second-round tie with Panathinaikos FC in the 1987/88 UEFA Cup, which the Greek side won on away goals.

• His only goal against Greek opponents came as Denmark beat the national team 7-1 in Copenhagen in a FIFA World Cup qualifier in 1989, and he was also in the team that beat Greece 2-1 at home in another World Cup qualifier in 1996 before drawing 0-0 on his most recent trip to Athens, 11 October 1997.

• AEK defender Arruabarrena and Getafe goalkeeper were team-mates at Argentinian side CA Boca Juniors between 1997 and 2000.

• The aggregate winners will meet the victors of the tie between SL Benfica and 1. FC Nürnberg in the Round of 16 on 6 and 12/13 March, playing the first leg at home.

• AEK's Nikolaos Liberopoulos, Geraldo and Edson Ramos Silva are within a booking of a one-match suspension. Getafe's is available again after being suspended for the first leg, but team-mates Albín, Pablo Hernández and Braulio are all a booking shy of a ban.

Competition information

The UEFA Cup grew out of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and was first held in 1971/72. The UEFA Cup is open to the holders, the teams finishing in leading positions behind the champions in their domestic top flights, the winners of national cup competitions, the winners of the League Cup in certain countries, the eleven winners of the final matches in the UEFA Intertoto Cup, three clubs from UEFA's Fair Play League and 16 clubs eliminated from the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. The eight third-placed clubs at the end of the UEFA Champions League group stage drop into the UEFA Cup, in time for the tournament's knockout phase.

• Format: If two or more teams were equal on points on completion of all the group matches, the following criteria was applied to determine the rankings: a) superior goal difference from all group matches played; b) higher number of goals scored; c) higher number of goals scored away; d) higher number of wins; e) higher number of away wins; f) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question, as well as its association, over the previous five seasons

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from 2007/08, at least six places on this list will be reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for two seasons. In 2006/07 the number of locally-trained players required began at four but the current six will rise to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubs from simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given a greater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as a consequence.

• Competition format: Two qualifying rounds produce a first round of 80 teams who play over two legs to find the 40 clubs that make up the group stage. This phase comprises eight groups of five, with each side playing four games, two at home and two away. The winners, runners-up and third-placed teams from each section advance to the last 32 where they are joined by the eight third-placed clubs from the UEFA Champions League. Here, the traditional two-match knockout format resumes, until the final. The dates for the games are as follows: the Round of 32 takes place on 13/14 and 21 February; Round of 16 on 6 and 12/13 March; quarter-finals on 3 and 10 April; semi-finals on 24 April and 1 May. The 2007/08 UEFA Cup final will be held at the City of Manchester Stadium on 14 May.

: For matches played under the cup (knockout) system, the team which scores the greater aggregate of goals in the two matches qualifies for the next round. If the two teams involved in a tie score the same number of goals over the two legs, the team which scores more away goals qualifies for the next stage. If this procedure does not produce a result, i.e, if the two teams score the same number of goals at home and away, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes shall be played at the end of the second leg. If during extra time, both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (i.e. the visiting club qualifies). If no goals are scored during extra time, penalty kicks determine which team qualifies.

• Player registration: UEFA regulations state that for all UEFA Cup matches from the start of the Round of 32, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players within their squad of 25 for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 1 February at the latest. One player from the above quota of three who has played UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded by another club in the UEFA Cup this season.
