College Baseball Foundation P.O. Box 6507 Phone: 806-742-0301 x249 Lubbock TX 79493-6507 E-mail: [email protected] January 30, 2008 Boyd, Thank you for participating in the balloting for the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s 2008 Induction Class. We appreciate your willingness to help. In the voters packet you will find the official ballot, an example ballot, and the nominee biographies: 1. The official ballot is what you return to us. Please return to us no later than Mon- day, February 11. 2. The example ballot’s purpose is to demonstrate the balloting rules. Obviously the names on the example ballot are not the nominee names. That was done to prevent you from being biased by the rankings you see there. 3. Each nominee has a profile in the biography packet. Some are more detailed than others and reflect what we received from the institutions and/or obtained in our own research. The ballot instructions are somewhat detailed, so be sure to read the directions at the top of the official ballot. Use the example ballot as a reference. Please try to consider the nominees based on their collegiate careers. In many cases nominees have gone on to professional careers but keep the focus on his college career as a player and/or coach. The Veterans (pre-1947) nominees often lack biographical details relative to those in the post-1947 categories. In those cases, the criteria may take on a broader spectrum to include the impact they had on the game/history of college baseball, etc.

First and foremost, I would like to recognize my family for encouraging me to attempt new things, and to always pursue a challenging course of study. My mother and father have shown nothing but the utmost love and support for me in every venture (and adventure) that I have undertaken, and I am eternally thankful to them. Further, I want to recognize my peers. First, my roommates: Drew Galloway, Jay Farmer, Dan Campbell, Fin O’Neill, and (at one time) Jonah Tomsick. Second, my a capella group, the BC Acoustics. Third, my friends, both from Boston College and from home (you know who you are). And fourth, my wonderful girlfriend, Sarah Tolman. Having no siblings, I embrace my close friends as my family. Each one of you gave me inspiration, determination, love, laughter, and support during the conducting of this research, and I sincerely thank you for this.

  • Latino Rap – Part 2
Latino Rap – Part 2 Intro/History As we discussed last time, many Chicano/Latino rappers do have a gang background (see my prior article on "Chicano Music: An Influence on Gang Violence and Culture”. At one time was on the NAGIA http://www.nagia.org/latino_rap.htm) Sgt. Ron Stallworth of the Utah Dept. of Public Safety has written four books on the subject of gangster rap and even testified at a capital homicide trial in Texas in which rap lyrics were the subject of the case in point. Law Enforcement around the country has become more and more concerned each year with the rap industry’s growing influence on gangs and crime. Det. Wayne Caffey of LAPD has also documented gang ties to many of these gangster rap groups. Rap is part of the Hip-Hop culture that started on the East Coast in the mid-seventies with such groups as the Sugar Hill Gang, Curtis Blow, and Grandmaster Flash. It is a diverse music style and one sub-group could be classified as "Gangster Rappers". Chicano/Latino MC’s may rap in English, Spanish, or Nahualt, or whatever. Increasingly, non-Latino artists are mixing Spanish lyrics in their music in an effort to reach out to the growing Latino market. Latinos have always been a part of the Hip-Hop scene. Early on, in New York, hip-hop break dancers like the Rock Steady Crew and "graffiti artist piecers" like Fidel Rodriquez were involved in the scene. But Latino MC’s did not enjoy that much success at first.

I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

A qualitative exploratory study with a social constructionist lens used a non-probability sampling method to recruit six Masters-level social work students in a stakeholder-engaged focus group. Subjects took the Rap Music Attitude and Perception (RAP) Scale, to gage perceptions about the music genre. As part of the focus group, open-ended questions were presented about Hip Hop music video content with themes of institutional racism. Data analysis verified individual and collective processes of social identity construction, delineating social agency versus oppression, and exploring the educational merits of Hip Hop.

  • Chapter 11: Reflections on the Stanford Prison Experiment: Genesis, Transformations, Consequences
CHAPTER 11: REFLECTIONS ON THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT: GENESIS, TRANSFORMATIONS, CONSEQUENCES Philip G. Zimbardo Stanford University Christina Maslach University of California, Berkeley Craig Haney University of California, Santa Cruz PROLOGUE Philip G. Zimbardo In a sense, this chapter does not fit well in the frame of this book on Milgram's paradigmatic research on obedience to authority. It is less about extreme forms of inter personal compliance to the demands of unjust authority than it is about emerging conformity pressures in "total situations" in which the processes of deindividuation and dehumanization are institutionalized. However, in another sense, it is the natural complementary bookend to chapters tied to Milgram's obedience paradigm, which between them hold up the lessons of the power of social situations to overwhelm individual dispositions and even to degrade the quality of human nature. Whereas a central contribution of Milgram's paradigm was to quantify aggression and thus the extent of obedience using a simple but impressive technology, the value of the Stanford Prison Experiment (SPE) resides in demonstrating the evil that good people can be readily induced into doing to other good people within the context of socially approved roles, rules, and norms, a legitimizing ideology, and institutional support that transcends individual agency. In addition, although the obedient participants in Milgram's many replications typically experienced distress for their "shocking" behavior, their participation lasted for only about one half hour, after which they learned that no one was really harmed. By contrast, participants in the SPE endured 6 days and nights of intense, often hostile, interactions that escalated daily in the level of interpersonal aggression of guards against prisoners.

Cypress, however, were not the headliners. That would have been the trio of 3rd Bass, then touring behind their radio single, “Pop Goes the Weasel”. Cypress Hill was the opening act, with only a slow-burn B-side, “How I Could Just Kill a Man”, to their name at the time. Of course, a few years later and this would all change.
