An experimental

Workshop with Harvey Burns

From Planes to Shapes, Spheres and Spaces

An Open-Source Workshop with Harvey Burns

"Imagine being given this task. Before you is a shape of some sort and you cannot see beyond its surface.

The object has a covering which is pliable to various degrees in different areas. You’re told that there is a certain, silent activity within and that the shape itself might change at any moment. Your job is to sense and interpret the internal activity while permitting a change in the shape no matter how subtle or dramatic. How would you go about accomplishing this? How would you describe what you eventually came to sense?" (Barrett Dorko)

The expressions “The 3-dimensional Fascial Net” or "The Endless Web" have become an accepted part of rolfing vocabulary. Our daily experience confirms that by working on one part of this continuum we can also affect many other sets of relationships.

But when imagining "3-D", although we have a sense of something that has depth and space, nevertheless these 3 dimensions are defined by two dimensional planes. When working, we do not experience planes under our hands. We find roundness and human shapes, the landscspes of physical existence. Does our touch honor this personal topography?

I believe that what we understand as techniques, are really points of departure towards reaching certain goals, rather than absolute fixed ways of working. To be effective, they should be adapted to fit both client and rolfer. The body is a set of irregular spheres and spaces - with centres that are not always in "the middle". We adapt by listening, experimenting and enquiring with our hands and whole sensory spectrum. Our clients adapt and respond at what Dr. Rolf called "the silent level". But although silent (and maybe not really a "level"), it is nonetheless full of information that the verbal mind cannot comprehend - but which is clearly perceived in sensory awareness.

This quality of experimentation and listening is an essential element of our work, indeed of any kind of creative work, and depends on the ongoing development of certain abilities (abilities are not techniques) which are the theme of this "laboratory" - all of which can be developed when they are clearly articulated and identified. Here are just some examples::

The ability to work with both hands at the same time, even when they are doing different things. The hands should be able to work independently but in communication with each other. Our function is to establish and mediate this communication.

The ability to always be involved in listening to the feedback from the tissues whatever we are doing. These clear and often subtle responses guide us into which directions these tissues prefer to move in response to our goals and way of contact.

The ability to work locally/feel globally, and extend our sense of touch to take in, and perceive more complex relationships.

When these abilities are the supporting background for our goals, the better we may reach them, because they have been generated by the needs of the person's system at the time, and not only through the application of one of our “one-site-fits all” techniques.
