Expert for the Scoping of the Regional Assessents and for the Global Assessment. Coordinating Lead Author for the Regional Assessment of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in Europe and Central Asia. Promotion of Stakeholder Engagement in IPBES with IPBES-pt and participating in the organisation of the PESC meetings (Pan-European Stakeholder Consultation) for IPBES : in Leipzig, 2013 and 2016, and in Basel, Switzerland, 2014. Was involved since the meeting in UNESCO 2005 in different activities related with the promotion of an Intergovernamental Platform for Biodiversity, including collaborating in the writing of a non-paper on Network of Networks and participating in consultations promoted by IMOSEB (International Mechanism of Scientific Expertise on Biodiversity) Other relevant past positions Founder (1994) of the Portuguese Association for Applied Algology, and founder (2007) and coordinator of the Portuguese Marine and Coastal Biodiversity Network, Member and co-chair of the Board European Office of the International Program Census of Marine Life (2005-2010) Member of the Board of the Society for Conservation Biology (European Section) Member of the Editorial Board of the journal “Marine Biodiversity” edited by Springer, Germany Representative of the Portuguese Ministry of Science and Technology in an interministerial panel on Biodiversity chaired by Ministry of Environment (2006-2011). Member of the working group for revision of the “Biodiversity Action Plan – Fisheries” organized by EC DG Environment and e DG Mare (2003-2004) Member of the Advisory Group from the European Environmental Agency for the “State of the Environment Report 2005” – SR3 – Halting of Biodiversity Loss by 2010 (2003-2005) Research lines I’ve been involved and lead many National, bi-lateral, European and International Projects and published more than 180 papers, book chapters and reports. I lead the Coastal Biodiversity laboratory (about 30 researchers) and our main research activities are: 1 - Research on ecology and marine biodiversity: a) distribution patterns and biology of algae and marine invertebrates; b) the role of biodiversity in the functioning and services of the ecosystems, and the effects of multiple drivers including climate change and invasive species, fisheries and harvest. Focus mainly on benthic communities including rocky shores and kelp forests, participating in the global network http://www.kelpecosystems.org started with the project “Global impacts of climate change on kelp forest ecosystems” Funded by NCEAS, USA. For the last 6 years we have developed an research program for mapping habitat preferences of cetaceans in macaronesia with UK and Italian researchers. Work in GEO BON on the development of a Marine Biodiversity Observation Network, and the marine Essential Biodiversity Variables that should be measured, as well as in H2020 AtlantOS (www.atlantos-h2020.eu) to develop the biodiversity component of the Ocean/marine observations. Starting also (2017) to work with the European Marine Board in an assessment to identify gaps in biological observations and produce recommendations to fill them. 2 - Study of algae: biology, ecophysiology, culture and sustainable use and creation of new products and economic activities. We have been developing in the last 18 years research in systems of integrated multitrophic aquaculture (IMTA), we have prototipe systems in collaboration with commercial fish aquacultures, and we are now also experimenting cultivation at sea. We have collaborations with several isntitutions (e.g. FEP, 3Bs UM, UA, FFUP) and companies (e.g. Coelho e Castro, Necton, SES, Aqualine, Statoil, Stolt Seafarms) for the development of algae for food, animal feed, fertilizer, biofuels and for the development of new products for biomedical applications. From this work and from our team a spin off company already resulted (AlgaPlus) and other is in preparation. We started recently an european H2020 project on seaweed production and Biorefinery – GENIALG 3 – Determine impacts of fisheries and other harvest of marine organisms on the benthic ecosystems and on the biological resources and research on new ways to use marine resources (waste and under-used organisms) – as a direct support to managers and local authorities and answering their requests. 4- Creation/development of platforms between researchers and managers/politcy makers to promote research that is relevant for the management and conservation of biodiversity and to increase the sharing of information and knowledge produced by research and by management. Examples of this action is the work of more than 14 years in the EPBRS, several research projects and with the Biodiversa Era Net (consortium of funding agencies to fund programs on biodiversity research). The work for EUROMARINE www.euromarinenetwork.eu consortium also includes the launch of calls and the funding of small research projects to increase networking in interdisciplinary fields and to convey the findings to the research funding and the marine and maritime policy community. 5-Work in the promotion of the IPBES starting in 2005 with IMOSEB and including particiapting in the writing a non-paper on the “network of networks” and being in the Executive Committee of the project KNEU - Developing a Knowledge Network for EUropean expertise on biodiversity and ecosystem services to inform policy making and economic sectors, that aimed at building and testing a scientific panel at European scale, testing also a prototype for IPBES and currently H2020 EKLYPSE www.eklipse-mechanism.eu that aims at building such a platform to support policy and decision making. Since 2013 is the Head of Delegation and Portuguese Focal Point for IPBES, was sellected as expert for scooping the Regional Assessments (2014) and the Globlal Assessments (2015) and is a CLA of chapter 3 for the IPBES Regional Assessemnt of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in Europe and Central Asia for IPBES (2015-2018). Since 2013 is running a national netowrk of researchers and policy makers to support IPBES – IPBES-pt with news and anoucements posted aslo in the facebook. She is collaborating with other Platforms in the PESC meetings and also in creating an European Stakeholder Platform for IPBES ( In 2017 participated
