Motorists should drive with caution through the work zones and adhere to posted detour signs and speed limits. Please pay special attention to the closures noted in red. Northbound and southbound Florida’s Turnpike/SR 821 between Biscayne Drive/SW 288 Street and SW 112 Avenue/SR 989 Overnight single lane closures, 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., Sunday, June 13, and nightly through Thursday, June 17. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is resurfacing the existing asphalt roadway for Florida’s Turnpike/SR 821 from S. Dixie Highway/US 1 to Biscayne Drive/SW 288 Street (Exit 5) and Florida’s Turnpike ramps from Biscayne Drive (Exit 5) to SW 112 Avenue/SR 989 (Exit 9), in Miami-Dade County. Work includes installing new guardrail, sign replacements, joint repairs, and lighting enhancements. Construction will continue through 2021. Approximate cost: $9 million. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is repainting the bridge at the northbound Florida’s Turnpike/SR 821 entrance ramp from SW 117 Avenue, over Don Shula Expressway/SR 874, in Miami-Dade County. Work will continue through late 2021. Approximate cost: $842,200. Sound barrier walls will be built along qualifying residential areas. Florida’s Turnpike entrance ramps at Kendall Drive will be reconfigured. Work also includes asphalt milling and resurfacing, bridge widening, drainage, lighting, signage, and traffic signal improvements on local roads. Construction will continue through mid-2021. Approximate cost: $73.9 million. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Florida’s Turnpike/SR 821 will be widened from six to 10 lanes between Dolphin Expressway/SR 836 and Bird Road/SW 40 Street. The project entails major modifications at the Dolphin Expressway/SR 836 interchange. Work includes replacing the Coral Way/SW 24 Street bridge over Florida’s Turnpike; operational, safety and capacity improvements for motorists and pedestrians on SW 8 Street and at the SW 8 Street interchange; and minor road improvements on West Flagler Street. The purpose of the project is to increase transit options for travel in southeast Florida, support the Eastward Ho! Initiative of the counties in the region, encourage redevelopment and economic growth in the coastal cities, and supplement the existing highway network. These goals were developed in cooperation with the counties, cities, metropolitan planning organizations, regional planning organizations, civic and business organizations, and the general public. The study has proceeded in two phases. The first phase led to the development of modally generic alternatives that were refined into four, specific modal alternatives in Phase 2, which is the subject of this report. These four alternatives: TSM, BRT, Integrated Rail “DMU”, and Integrated Rail “Push- Pull,” were defined and compared against both a No Build alternative and against each other. Each of these alternatives incorporates new transit service along the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) cor- ridor with existing transit service operated by each of the three counties in the region (Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade) and Tri-Rail.

    Acknowledgements The City of Fort Lauderdale’s Complete Streets Manual was established based on the Broward County Complete Streets Guidelines developed by the Broward MPO, with additional influences by the New Haven, CT Complete Streets Guidebook, and the Philadelphia Complete Streets Design Handbook. Broward County’s Complete Streets Guidelines document was funded through a Transforming Our Community’s Health (TOUCH) grant, which is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Community Transformation Grants to support public health efforts to reduce chronic disease, promote healthier lifestyles, reduce health disparities and control health care spending. The Broward County Complete Streets Guidelines were adapted from the Los Angeles County Model Design Manual for Living Streets. Special acknowledgement is made to all of the hard working committee members that spent many hours developing the manuals that were used to develop this one including the Broward Complete Streets Initiative Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), the Los Angeles County Complete Streets Committee, Philadelphia and the New Haven Complete Streets Steering Committees. Foreword The City of Fort Lauderdale has adopted a Resolution to follow Smart Growth Principles in decisions being made within the city on investments and project reviews. An important tool to implement Smart Growth Principles is a Complete Streets Manual. Complete Streets are an essential ingredient in creating livable, walkable neighborhoods and reconnecting the community with destinations. The City’s efforts to create a multimodal, pedestrian-friendly community accentuated by the Fast Forward Fort Lauderdale Visioning Process together with the regional efforts to implement Complete Streets, has driven the City to create its own Complete Streets Manual based on the Broward County Complete Streets Guidelines with influences also from the cities of New Haven, CT and Philadelphia, PA Complete Streets Guidelines.

Community Background Report Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Boundaries North: Pine Avenue South: Flamingo Drive East: Atlantic Ocean West: Intracoastal Waterway Community Type: Municipality Report Last Updated: November,2011 History The Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea was first incorporated in 1927, but its charter was revoked by the state in 1933, during the Great Depression. It remained under county jurisdiction until a new charter was instituted in 1947 and validated in 1949.1 The town considers the date of its founding to be 1947.2 The entire town is located on a long, thin barrier island separated from the mainland by the Intracoastal Waterway.3 It is interesting to note that the town has a total area of 1.5 square miles, of which 0.73 square miles (59.35 percent) is water.4 Lauderdale-By-The-Sea’s shoreline is popular with beach divers, due to a unique snorkel trail and a coral reef, all within 100 yards of the beach.5 The waters just off the town’s shore are also home to the marine ruins of the SS Copenhagen, a 19th-century steamer that sank in 1900.
