Washington, D.C. 20242 PREPARED BY: Stuart Fiedel, John Bedell, Charles LeeDecker THE LOUIS BERGER GROUP, INC. 2300 N Street NW Washington, D.C. 20037 December 2005 FOREWORD This is the first of three volumes reporting the results of a three-year archeological survey of the easternmost 59 miles of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park (C&O Canal Park) for the National Park Service (NPS), National Capital Region, from 2003 through 2005. In recognition of the paucity of basic archeological data for the C&O Canal Park, and for other NPS properties in the National Capital Region, funds were devoted to implement the Systemwide Archeological Inventory Program (SAIP) in this area. The SAIP was developed to address the requirements of the National Historic Preservation Act (specifically Sections 106 and 110), Executive Order 11593, and the Archeological Resources Protection Act. The rationale for the archeological survey was based primarily on the NPS’s resource management needs under Section 110 rather than being driven by development or capital improvement projects within the park.

Subsequently and as requested at the meeting, this memorandum offers a brief documentation of the methods and procedures utilized in the development of these loads. It is understood that this draft documentation is in active development and reflects the current available data, assumptions, coefficients, and other parameters within the model. It is noted that this documentation accounts for comments and requests made in the April 27th meeting and will be updated to reflect future comments and WIP committee consensus. To conserve efforts and cost, a new model run will not be conducted until this documentation is reviewed, all data are received, and consensus is reached to rerun the model. Water Quality Modeling (Overview of Methods) The model used by Anne Arundel County Government to estimate the pollutant load is based on the PLOAD- EPA Simple Method, which is integrated into the EPA BASINS program. Little (1987-1988) Principal Investigator Mark P. Leone Report Prepared for Charles Carroll House of Annapolis, Inc. by Archaeology in Annapolis A Cooperative Project between Historic Annapolis Foundation and The University of Maryland at College Park 2002 Abstract and Executive Summary In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Archaeology in Annapolis was invited to excavate the Carroll House and garden on 107 Duke of Gloucester Street in Annapolis, Maryland. The site, named the St. Mary's Site (18AP45) for the Catholic church on the property, is currently owned by the Redemptorists, a Roman Catholic congregation of priests and brothers who have occupied the site since 1852. Prior to the Redemptorists' tenure, the site was owned by the Carroll family from 1701-1852 and is perhaps best known as the home of Charles Carroll of Carrollton (1737-1832), signer of the Declaration of Independence. Excavations at the site were conducted during four consecutive summer seasons from 1987- 1990. The investigation focused on three research questions.
