There is one statutorily designated heritage asset within the Study Area, a Grade II Listed mid-18th century barn located approximately 150 m north of the Site.

The SMR records no undesignated heritage assets within the Site or Study Area. The SMR records one previous archaeological investigation within the Study Area; a programme of trial trenching was undertaken adjacent to the south-west corner of the Site in 1999. Several features relating to modern field drainage were identified but no features of archaeological significance.

The Site was not included in the Magnesian Limestone in South and West AP Mapping Project, so no information was available on the extent of any cropmark features in or adjoining the Site.

The HEC records the present character of the majority of the Site as Enclosed Land: Agglomerated fields 1970-2003 with a partial historic character of Enclosed Land: Piecemeal Enclosure 1750-1969 and Unenclosed Land: Commons and greens 1066-1749. This area of the Site is assigned to the Agglomerated Enclosure character zone. A strip along the western boundary of the Site is recorded as Ornamental, Parkland and Recreational: Allotments 1931-2003 with a partial historic character of Enclosed Land: Surveyed Enclosure (Parliamentary/ Private) 1826-1930 and Unenclosed Land: Commons and greens 1066-1825. This area of the Site is assigned to the Industrial Settlements character zone.

Comparison of historic OS mapping indicates the Site was split between several fields on the First Edition OS map of 1855. By the 1893 OS map several field boundaries had been removed from the Site. The Wharncliffe Branch railway line had been constructed along the southern boundary of the Site by the 1905 OS map, and by 1931 the west of the Site had become allotments. These allotments had shrunk to their present size by the 1956 OS map. Little changes within the Site for the remainder of the 20th century, although the railway had been dismantled by the 1971 OS map. Information from the HEC identified a the loss and reorientation of boundaries within the Site since the 1970s which could be indicative of an eposide of opencast mining.

Post-1990 APs show the Site as split between several fields with a strip of allotments along the western boundary of the Site.

Information from The Coal Authority online GIS indicates surface mining and probable shallow coal mine workings across the Site.

Known and Potential Heritage Assets Although there are no known remains from the prehistoric, Romano-British or Anglo-Saxon periods within the Site or Study Area such remains are difficult to predict or exclude. The possibility of disturbing remains relating to these periods is uncertain with the significance being recorded as unknown. There is a high likelihood of encountering medieval to 19th century remains associated with agricultural practices considered to be of low- local significance.

Survival

Data from the HEC and the Coal Authority online GIS suggests the presence of mining activities within the Site. At present, detailed information of the mining operations is currently unknown and, as such, its impact upon the Site is currently unknown and further assessment is recommended to establish the impact. There is also a possibility that some ground disturbance may have occurred during the construction of the railway along the southern boundary of the Site which may have impacted the survival of heritage assets in this section of the Site
