Dear Friends, This was the sentence that we in our United Benefice of St Mary Worsbrough and Holy Trinity Elsecar were asked to think about over 4 days last month when the Northern Bishops ( 19 in total including Archbishop Sentamu) descended on our Diocese and spent 4 days in mission in our communities. The question that stems from this is: What do we see? How do we respond? How as Christians in our communities can we show Gods love and help others to seek him and proclaim Jesus as Lord? In our Deanery of Tankersley we were blessed to have Bishop Paul the Bishop of Whitby with us. We had the most wonderful United Deanery Service and shared lunch at St Marys with over 100 people attending- thank you to the choir and everyone who helped with the food. At his welcoming service at Wortley he said that the answer, certainly to the last question, is that we have to be infectious. He used the example of when his 3 year old son had chicken pox and gave him it. His son had one little blister but he ended up being covered from head to foot with them . As Christians we need to be infectious so that those who come into contact with us ‘catch Jesus’ and this is the responsibility of all of us who are baptised. You don’t need a degree in theology to say that you believe in Jesus and you have a direct relationship with him. St Francis said that in order to proclaim the kingdom of God we should use actions and only words if necessary. Its how we act and have our being that shows we are followers of Jesus. 4 Corporately at St Marys we already help collect for the Food Bank in Barnsley , we support Christian Aid , the Children’s Society, the Women’s Refuge. We have a wonderful Drop In on a Thursday morning, Messy Church for Adults, Mothers Union (who assist with the Archer Project at the Cathedral where the homeless are fed)- but this is the tip of the iceberg really. If we stand at the Crossroads and look what do we as individuals see? And what are we going to do about it? How infectious are you? And if you’re not, what do you need to do to change that? This is what the LORD says: "Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.’’ Jeremiah 6 verse 16 Alison Some of our Junior Choristers who received their medals from Bishop Paul Photo copyright J. The New Testament lesson from the book of James clearly says we are not to have favourites. It says that we are treat people equally – James’ compares those in rich clothing to those in poor clothing, saying we should treat both the same. Fast forward that example to 2015. The children had just gone back to school. We talked about how they should treat all their school friends equally regardless of how clever they are or how good at sport they are. For us adults we only have to look at the news and we can apply this lesson - we are to treat everyone equally regardless of whether they’re locked out of a train station in Hungary, in a camp in Calais or if we’ve known them all our lives. We are to treat people equally regardless of race or religion. The children made a candle holder decorated round the sides with a simple saying that we can all use. It said “stop, before I judge I will pray.” Happy Birthday to Olwen who will be 6 in October. Our next meeting is on 11th October – all children aged 4 or over are welcome to come and join in the fun. 9 Our next meeting is on 11th October – all children aged 4 or over are welcome to come and join in the Minister: Rev Mick Neal, 12 Orchard Croft, Dodworth, Barnsley S75 3QY Tel: 01226 770422 [email protected] SUNDAY SERVICE 10.45am ……..…(Monthly United Service at Hoyland, 10.30 am, see below) WEEKDAYS: Monday (term-time) ………………….….Healthy Bones – 10.00am…. Archaeological Assessment CPM Cirencester : CPM , 2004, 22pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: CPM A desk-based archaeological assessment was prepared in advance of a proposed prison extension. No archaeological remains were recorded within the site itself, but a number of burials of probable early medieval date had been recorded 'at the prison' during previous works. The assessment indicated that similar archaeological finds and subsurface features relating to an Anglo-Saxon cemetery may have survived within the study area. Information suggested that previous finds had been made on the south- western side of the prison. Further archaeological mitigation was recommended. The report also contained a previous watching brief (May 2004) report carried out during test pitting and borehole excavation. We have ambitious plans to improve and grow as identified in our Corporate Plan for 2017-2020. This sets out what we aim to achieve over the next three years to improve outcomes for our customers and the community as we strive to become more customer focused, modern, efficient and business minded. We're still focused on achieving our three key priorities: Thriving and vibrant economy People achieving their potential Strong and resilient communities We still feel that these areas warrant greater attention, emphasis, and possibly resources, to influence other areas of activity and make the greatest impact overall. The council will concentrate resources to make the most impact by providing services where they are most needed and we'll help people to do more for each other and their community. To do this, we need a solid evidence base to develop effective interventions which will help to achieve a ‘Better Barnsley’. The data within this report are from the latest available as of May 2018. This information is intended to stimulate discussion, debate and action to support Area Councils and Ward Alliances to identify some of their strategic priorities on an area basis and commission services to meet these challenges. This profile compares the Ward with the overall Barnsley figure and that of England where possible.

It was named after the South Yorkshire village where the coal deposits were found near to the surface. Visit the sites of early mines dating back to the early 1800s and find out about the primitive methods of extraction using day- holes and drift mines. This walk follows in the footsteps of coal along the Silkstone Waggonway which was constructed to take loads of coal from the small-scale mining operations scattered across the countryside to the nearest canal basin for onwards transportation to the towns and cities where demand was growing.
