Stand at the Crossroads and look...

Dear Friends,

This was the sentence that we in our United Benefice of St Mary Worsbrough and Holy Trinity Elsecar were asked to think about over 4 days last month when the Northern Bishops ( 19 in total including Archbishop Sentamu) descended on our Diocese and spent 4 days in mission in our communities.

The question that stems from this is: What do we see? How do we respond? How as Christians in our communities can we show Gods love and help others to seek him and proclaim Jesus as Lord?

In our Deanery of Tankersley we were blessed to have Bishop Paul the Bishop of Whitby with us. We had the most wonderful United Deanery Service and shared lunch at St Marys with over 100 people attending- thank you to the choir and everyone who helped with the food. At his welcoming service at Wortley he said that the answer, certainly to the last question, is that we have to be infectious. He used the example of when his 3 year old son had chicken pox and gave him it. His son had one little blister but he ended up being covered from head to foot with them .

As Christians we need to be infectious so that those who come into contact with us ‘catch Jesus’ and this is the responsibility of all of us who are baptised. You don’t need a degree in theology to say that you believe in Jesus and you have a direct relationship with him. St Francis said that in order to proclaim the kingdom of God we should use actions and only words if necessary. Its how we act and have our being that shows we are followers of Jesus.

4

Corporately at St Marys we already help collect for the Food Bank in , we support Christian Aid , the Children’s Society, the Women’s Refuge. We have a wonderful Drop In on a Thursday morning, Messy Church for Adults, Mothers Union (who assist with the Archer Project at the Cathedral where the homeless are fed)- but this is the tip of the iceberg really.

If we stand at the Crossroads and look what do we as individuals see? And what are we going to do about it? How infectious are you? And if you’re not, what do you need to do to change that?

This is what the LORD says: "Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.’’ Jeremiah 6 verse 16

At our last meeting we talked about favourites. The New Testament lesson from the book of James clearly says we are not to have favourites.

It says that we are treat people equally – James’ compares those in rich clothing to those in poor clothing, saying we should treat both the same.

Fast forward that example to 2015. The children had just gone back to school. We talked about how they should treat all their school friends equally regardless of how clever they are or how good at sport they are.

For us adults we only have to look at the news and we can apply this lesson - we are to treat everyone equally regardless of whether they’re locked out of a train station in Hungary, in a camp in Calais or if we’ve known them all our lives. We are to treat people equally regardless of race or religion.

The children made a candle holder decorated round the sides with a simple saying that we can all use. It said “stop, before I judge I will pray.”

Happy Birthday to Olwen who will be 6 in October.

Our next meeting is on 11th October – all children aged 4 or over are welcome to come and join in the fun.

WIVES GROUP

Our AGM and 50th year celebrations were held on 14th September. We had a lovely evening looking at photographs and sharing memories with current and former members who joined us for the celebrations. There was a cake!!

The group is Vi Hufton, Jean Davis, Vera Taylor, Rev. Alison Earl and Glenis Burkinshaw.

Vi and Glenis were two of the founder members of the group. Iris Jubb was the other founder member and she sent her good wishes and fond memories of the group but was unable to join in the celebrations. Vera Taylor was leader of the group for many years and now opens our meetings and introduces the speakers. Jean baked the cake and iced it so magnificently. Many thanks, Jean. We were pleased that Alison was able to join us in the celebrations.

For our first speaker of the year we welcomed back Pat Osborne who is a favourite with the group. By popular demand we asked her to tell us

14 about the life of ‘Lady Randy’ – Winston Churchill’s mother, Lady Randolph Churchill.

On 12th October we will welcome back another popular speaker, Radio Sheffield’s Gerry Kersey who will be regaling us with tales of the celebrities he has met on his radio shows. An entertaining evening is forecast. At the following meeting on 26th October we will hear about the making of the TV series ‘Dad’s Army’ with Roger Walton.

A couple of advance notices  An OPEN MEETING on 9th NOVEMBER when Raymond Walker of the Tasker Trust will show us slides of historical photographs of BARNSLEY STREETS. See how Barnsley has changed over the years.  There is a trip to CHESTER CHRISTMAS MARKET on TUESDAY, 1st DECEMBER. This is open to anyone who would care to join us. Names are being taken now. Pam

Congratulations

On behalf of all the members and friends of the church can I offer our congratulations to two of our longest serving members of the church, Pamela and Ronnie Goddard of Worsbrough Road, Birdwell, on their 70th Wedding Anniversary.

They were married at St Mary’s on Wednesday 24th October 1945 by the Rev Isaac Perry.

At the time Pamela was serving in the Women’s Land Army in North and Ronnie was on leave from the RAF after 3 years’ service in Iraq.

On arrival in Scarborough on honeymoon there was a telegram awaiting them on the mantelpiece headed On His Majesty’s Service. Addressed to Corporal R. Goddard, it read “REURN TO UNIT IMMEDIATELY” There is no record of the comments made at the time.

Mission Action Plan - Toy Bags Update

Just to let you all know that the toy bags have now been filled and are ready for use in the church.

A big thank you to Anne and Jean for their help in filling the bags and I would also like to thank all the people who have contributed to this action plan. As usual you have been very generous.

Yvonne

Christmas Shoe boxes.

There will be no Christmas Shoe box service this year but the Church is collecting boxes to give as Christmas Presents to children growing up in challenging circumstances. Boxes will be collected from Church by the Samaritan’s Purse organisation on Sunday 15th November, see their web-site or the leaflets in church for details on what is preferred in the boxes.

Editorial; This month I’ve been thinking about immigration

“One death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic” Joseph Stalin.

It must be unusual for a parish magazine to have a quote from Joseph Stalin but the death of a single little boy on a beach in Greece has done much to galvanise support for the millions of refugees that are currently displaced from their homelands because of war and terrorism. Leaving aside any morality issues about showing the images, no one who saw the footage can fail to have been moved.

A street in Syria before and after bombing

Charities believe that there are some 60 million people currently displaced across the world. Many of these are from the middle east, though countries like South Sudan, Eritrea and others in Sub-Saharan Africa also have high numbers of people who have had to flee their homes. Most of these are educated, skilled people who have left behind lifestyles that are very similar to our own. They are doctors, nurses, teachers, retail managers, lecturers, shop workers, engineers. They are not economic migrants, poor unskilled people

18 hoping to scrounge a living off the benefit system in the UK, as their own poorer countries cannot support them. Often they are escaping war, their homes and street like in the pictures destroyed by bombs. Or they are escaping oppressive religious regimes; fundamental Muslim groups like Islamic State and the Taliban.

These people are aware of the dangers they face when they start out on the journey to Europe. They are highly networked, they have mobile phones, they use social networks. When they pay the equivalent of thousands of pounds to people they know are criminals they are aware of the risks. When they allow themselves to be crammed into shipping containers they are fully aware that on previous trips numbers of their fellow countrymen have died slow and lingering deaths. When they pass their small children to relatives in a tiny inflatable boat to paddle across the open sea, they are intelligent enough to assess the risks and make the decision to get in after them. Just pause for one moment and imagine what their lives must be like back home, if the serious risk of suffocation, drowning or imprisonment is a better opportunity than what they are leaving behind.

What I find more worrying, even embarrassing is that I’ve read reports this week that some families have had such a poor welcome once they have arrived in Europe, that their life here has not been what they hoped for, that they are contemplating returning to their war torn homes. Again just look at the picture of a pleasant urban street in Syria destroyed by bombing and imagine heading off to return to that.

As Christians it is our duty to make them welcome in our churches, in our towns, possibly in our homes. It is welcome to see our Diocese beginning to address this issue. The answers are complex and difficult. Stopping the migration may not be possible, slowing it might be but in the meantime children, young people, men and Jesus as the stranger at the door from a painting by women will continue to arrive. We are called to Holman Hunt welcome the stranger at our door. Once again we are challenged by our faith. Alastair 19

Gift Aid

As St Mary’s is a registered Charity we are able to claim Gift Aid on donations to the church if you are a tax payer. This means we can claim an extra 25% from the government on your donation eg for £1 we get another 25p. This is really GOOD NEWS as it costs £1000 per week to keep the church running and to have a priest. We do not receive money from any other source other than those who use it and we need all the help we can get. If you are a tax payer and already have an envelope for church – but have not filled in a Gift Aid form please ask Martin Pearson for one and help your giving go a little further. It doesn’t cost you anything extra at all to do this. With grateful thanks.

Vicar Alison, the Churchwardens and PCC of St Marys.

The Big Tidy Up

At the beginning of November we are planning to have a major tidy up of the school room and out buildings. If any of the organisations store anything in the school room could you have a look through and if anything is no longer required can you let us know and we can remove it- and place a sticker on your cupboard/storage space that you have checked everything. Similarly as an individual if there are things stored in the school room that you wish to keep could we ask that these are removed and stored at home. If they are no longer required let us know and we can remove them for you. Many thanks

If you ever find yourself having to lead prayers at the beginning of a service or a meeting, and you are bored with the ones you normally tend to use, here are some I found recently. [Editor}

ALMIGHTY GOD, give us grace to remember that we are in your Holy Presence, that we may serve you with reverence and godly fear, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

O GOD, whom saints and angels delight to worship in heaven; Be with us, we ask you as we seek to perfect the praise of your children on earth: And grant to us even now such glimpses of your beauty that we may be made worth at length to behold it unveiled for evermore, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

HELP US, O God, to remember that we are in your Holy presence, and to lead thy praise with reverence and joy: through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

GRANT TO US, O LORD, the help of the Holy Spirit, that we may worthily sing thy praise, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

ALMIGHTY GOD, who has ordained that the hearts of men shall be kindled by music, grant we pray thee that all who lead they praises may know themselves to be your minister, and that the hearts of all who hear may be lifted up to you: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
