While Evagrius, like others before him, understands that virtue and vice have an affective component, and that these affections are reactions to mental images, for Evagrius these images are veridically thinner than what we find in earlier discussions of passion in ancient philosophy. As a result, vice is less a matter of false reasoning and false perception than it is a matter of the excessive dwelling on representations connected with events of one’s personal history, to the point that the passions aroused at the time of those events become globalized dispositions. Evagrius’s concern with how memories lead us to dwell on these “bad thoughts” proves to be point of contact with psychoanaly which many modern authors, including Michel Foucault, have detected; yet a close analysis of what Evagrius takes to be involved in self-examination reveals that Foucault’s account of the “technologies of the self” fails to take into account Evagrius’s interest in the distinction between the endowed self, that self which is examined, and the ideal self, the goal of the ascetic activity. i In Memoriam Conor P.     Chapter 2 Emotions, Demons, and Moral Ability This chapter deals with TriTrac’s relationship to ancient theories of emotions (πάθη) and cognition. What role do emotions play within the mechanisms of the mind? In ancient time, emotions were not only thought to be a cognitive matter, but very much a bodily matter, too;1 they were also closely intertwined with ethics and morality.2 As the famous philosopher-physician Galen stated plainly, the doctrine of virtues was thought to follow necessarily from the doc- trine of the emotions.3 Nonetheless, early Christian attitudes to emotions has been a somewhat neglected topic4 until fairly recently,5 while TriTrac’s rela- tion to ancient theories on emotions remains to be explored, especially from the perspective of their importance for ethical considerations. In this chapter, we explore the role that emotion, or passion,6 plays in TriTrac from the per- spective of ancient debates concerning the composition of the human mind and the cognitive apparatus.     Spiritual struggle ALBERTO GIANQUINTO, Jacob and the Angel Words of Spirituality by ENZO BIANCHI If we want to fight evil effectively, we have to fight within ourselves and defeat the evil that is in us The spiritual struggle is an essential aspect of Christian spiritual life. The Bible asks believers to prepare themselves to encounter opposition. Just as we are called to “have dominion” within creation, we are also called to dominate ourselves and the sin that threatens us: “Sin is a demon lurking at the door: his urge is toward you, yet you can be his master” (Genesis 4:7). This struggle is an interior one, not directed against those around us but against the temptations, thoughts, suggestions, and inner processes that lead us to consume evil. Paul, using images related to war and athletics (running and boxing), speaks of Christian life as a fight, a sort of inner tension that allows us to remain faithful to Christ, and that involves an unmasking of the processes by which sin gains control over our hearts so that we can fight it at its source. Our heart, in fact, is the site of the battle. In Biblical anthropology, the heart is the organ that best represents life in its totality: as the center of the ethical and inner life, the intelligence and the will, the heart contains all of the elements that constitute what we call the ‘person’ and is similar to how we define ‘conscience.’ The Christian spiritual struggle, however, is in no way limited to a psychological process of discernment and adjustment.

    c Peter King, in Reason and Emotion in Medieval and Early Modern Philosophy DISPASSIONATE PASSIONS I want to trace the Hellenistic origins and mediæval career of the idea that there can be emotions that do not have the disagreeable baggage with which ordinary emotions travel — emotions that are neither turbulent nor disruptive, emotions that lack any somatic component, emotions that are the product of reason rather than opposed to it: in a word, dispassionate passions of the soul. The mediæval motivation behind the idea of dispassionate passions is not far to seek. It is a fundamental article of faith that immaterial beings such as God and His angels, as well as postmortem human souls, enjoy bodiless bliss in Heaven as the highest state of which they are capable. Hence the transports of delight experienced there must be independent of the body; they are the final fulfillment of rational nature, not its annulment, and they contribute to a stable and settled state of eternal blessedness. Yet while the mediæval motivation for adopting dispassionate passions seems clear, such reasons of faith do not apply to the Stoics. More pressing, the doctrine itself stands in need of clarification. How could passions be dispassionate, emotions unemotional, feelings unfelt? Our sources for early and middle Stoicism permit us to have a clear view of the main outlines of the doctrine of dispassionate passions in the Hellenis- tic period, though not about the motivation behind it, despite its being one of the aspects of Stoicism heavily criticized in Antiquity (§). Mediæval philoso- phers tried to transplant the doctrine of dispassionate passions from its Stoic origins to different philosophical environments: Augustine into Platonism (§), Aquinas into Aristotelianism (§).

In any case, the decision would be judged as rash, irresponsible and irrational. However, that was the case of Evagrius of Pontus, an Egyptian desert monk to whom is due the first systematization of Christian mystics. Born in the region of Pontus in 345, he was the son of a chorbishop of Ibo- ra and was educated in Neocaesarea by Basil the Great, who ordained him as reader. Leaving his homeland in 379, Evagrius spent about three years in Con- stantinople, where he was made archdeacon by his spiritual father, Gregory of Nazianzus, and participated in ecclesiastical matters, including the Second Ecumenical Council (381). It was in this city, after Gregory’s departure, that he was involved in a complex sentimental situation with the wife of a court official, and received a vision in which he was ordered to leave the city and his work immediately. And so he did. He unexpectedly moved to Jerusalem, where he joined the monastic communities of Melania the Elder and Rufinus, taking monastic vows in 383. He migrated to Egypt, where he met and studied under many of the central figures of Egyptian monasticism, soon becoming one himself. The turning point in the life of Evagrius is brought about by a phenome- non that his biographer calls a vision and that, as in a dream, consists in the representation of auditory, visual sensitive images outside reality that leave some kind of message provoking changes in the subject’s behavior.

He later traveled to the Egyptian desert, living there as a monk, meeting the venerated Desert Fathers, and learning from them for about fifteen years. Much later, he would go to the region of Gaul to help establish a monastery there by writing monastic manuals, the Institutes and the Conferences.
