Exquisite Sound From the palaces of ancient Egypt to the concert halls of our modern cities, the wondrous music of the harp has compelled attention from all peoples and all countries. Through this passage of time many changes have been made in the original design. The early instruments shown in drawings on the tomb of Rameses II (1292-1225 B.C.) were richly decorated but lacked the fore-pillar. Later the "Kinner" developed by the Hebrews took the form as we know it today. The pedal harp was invented about 1720 by a Bavarian named Hochbrucker and through this ingenious device it be- came possible to play in eight major and five minor scales complete. Today the harp is an important and familiar instrument providing the "Exquisite Sound" and special effects so important to modern orchestration and arrange- ment. TICKET RESALE AND RESERVATION PLAN The ticket resale and reservation plan has now operated for the past five seasons and has proved a great success. The Trustees wish again to thank subscribers who have taken part, and to bring it once more to the atten- tion of all other subscribers and Friends. Should you find that you are unable to attend one of the concerts for which you have tickets, the Trustees hope that you will allow others, who cannot obtain tickets for this subscription series, to have the opportunity to hear the Orchestra. You can do this by telephoning Symphony Hall (266-1492), and giving your name and ticket location to the switchboard operator. Your ticket then becomes available for resale, and the income gained is paid to the Pension Fund of the Orchestra. Subscribers who release their tickets for resale will receive a copy of the program of the concert they miss, and written acknowledgment of their gift for their tax records. Those who wish to request tickets for a specific concert should tele- phone Symphony Hall and ask for 'Reservations'. Requests will be attended to in the order in which they are received, and, since the Management has learned by experience how many returned tickets to expect, no reservation will be confirmed unless the caller can be assured of a seat. Tickets ordered in this way may be bought and collected from the box office on the day of the concert two hours before the start of the program. Tickets not claimed half an hour before concert time will be released.     ANNIVERS75thARY 1935 - 2010 The Music & the Artists of the Bach Festival Society The Mission of the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park, Inc. is to enrich the Central Florida community through presentation of exceptionally high-quality performances of the finest classical music in the repertoire, with special emphasis on oratorio and large choral works, world-class visiting artists, and the sacred and secular music of Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries in the High Baroque and Early Classical periods. This Mission shall be achieved through presentation of: • the Annual Bach Festival, • the Visiting Artists Series, and • the Choral Masterworks Series. In addition, the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park, Inc. shall present a variety of educational and community outreach programs to encourage youth participation in music at all levels, to provide access to constituencies with special needs, and to participate with the community in celebrations or memorials at times of significant special occasions. Kenward Elmslie is responsible for the libretto. ******* The Center for Advanced Study at the University of Illinois commissioned Robert Kelly, Professor of Composition at the University, to write an opera. Professor Kelly has chosen for his theme the conquest of Mexico presented from the Aztec viewpoint. The opera will be entitled THE WHITE GODS. ******* Jack Gottlieb, assistant to Leonard Bernstein, will witness the premiere of his one-act opera TEA PARTY on April 18 at the Donnell Library, 23 W. 53 St. in New York. It is written for soprano, alto, tenor and baritone and will be performed with the accompaniment of two pianos. The opera, which the composer subtitles "Movement I of a Symphony of Operas" is available through Boosey and Hawkes. ******* The Central City Opera commissioned work, LADY FROM COLORADO, will be pre- miered in Central City on July 3. The Robert Ward-Bernard Stambler work is based on a book by Homer Croy and actual Colorado history and was commissioned in honor of the 100th anniversary of the University of Den- ver (formerly Colorado Seminary). ******* Shostakovich's KATERINA ISMAILOVA (see Jan. Bulletin) will be premiered in the U.S.
