    Brad Underwood - HoF - 2006 Brad Underwood, Player- Owen Sound, Ontario Written by: Jamie Simpson When Owen Sound is brought up in any fastball conversation, Brad Underwood’s name is usually mentioned in a part of the story. Brad’s fastball career started at an early age watching his father Bill pitch in the Men’s Fastball League in Owen Sound. Like his son, Bill was a fastball flame thrower who dominated opponents with his speed from 40 feet. Brad decided to take up pitching and follow in his father’s footsteps at a young age. The only difference would be that it would be from the left side. At an early age, Brad established himself as a pitcher with a great amount of potential with a devastating change-up. Before the age of 19, he won numerous Ontario Championships: 2 Peewee, 1 Bantam, 1 Midget, won gold at the Midget Summer games, and two Junior titles. In 1980, Brad was part of a Junior Gold Medal team from St. Catharines. This was just the start of his accolades in fastball. In the 1979 and 1980 ball seasons, the Owen Sound King Farms Senior Team called up Brad from his Junior team for some games. He compiled a 9-3 record with an impressive 110 strike outs. The following year, Brad became a force for the senior team from the pitching circle and batter’s box. He would remain with the Owen Sound team for the following 12 years with a brief stint across the border in Mount Pleasant. In just over a decade, Brad was part of five ISC Qualifier Championship teams, five Ontario ISC League Championship Teams, four Ontario Championship Teams, and two Canadian Championship Teams.

    WWBA Championship Rules & Regulations • • Coaches: Be sure you are aware of all rules and rule changes. • WWBA reserves the right to amend these rules at any time for specific tournament play. National Federation Baseball Rules will be enforced with the following exceptions. 1. All games except the CHAMPIONSHIP game will be played with a strict two hour time limit kept by umps & staff. No inning can start after 2 hours. If home team is batting & ahead & hit time limit game is over. For each team's pool games the home team is predetermined. 2. All pool games that are tied after 7 innings or the 2 hour time limit will be recorded a tie. A tie is equal to a ½ win and ½ loss for each team. 3. One team from each pool will go on to the championship round plus one Wild Card (16 Total). A-H Teams will be seeded in the Upper bracket. I-O Teams plus Wild Card will be seeded in Lower Bracket. 4. Forfeits: All games must be started with at least 9 players. A game can be finished with 8 players. Once a team establishes it has 8 players it must finish the game with 8 players. The player leaving the original lineup can not return and his spot in the hitting lineup will be recorded as an out! In case of forfeit the winning team will be awarded a winning score of the average runs they scored in all of their pool games vs “0” runs allowed. The losing team will be recorded a 10-0 loss.

    2006 WWBA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ALL-PROSPECT TEAM (Please note, this list consists of the Top Prospects, not the All-Tournament team.) 2007 Grad Pitchers RHP Rick Porcello (South Florida Bandits): Porcello was at the top of his game, topping out at 98 mph with solid secondary pitches, command, poise and confidence. The top of this very talented 6-5 prospect’s game might put him at the top of the 2007 class. LHP Josh Smoker (East Cobb Astros): Everyone has come to expect Smoker to dominate at WWBA events, but even his 5 inning/13K performance against a top ABD team was impressive by the standards he’s established. If you want a winner, there is no better pitcher in the 2007 class. RHP Michael Main (Southeast Select): Main was his usual self, with a fastball that touched 97 mph and overpowered hitters when it was in the strike zone. LHP Jack McGeary (East Cobb Astros): McGeary’s curveball was at its best in Jupiter and his strikeout totals (15 in 7 innings) reflected that. He throws easy and effortlessly. LHP John Gast (Orlando Braves): Gast was as dominant as any WWBA pitcher has every been, striking out 17 in a 1 hit shutout. The improvement in his command and secondary pitches has been tremendous. RHP Julian Sampson (Baseball Northwest): The 6-5 Washington native was one of the revelations of the event for scouts, showing great projectability and dominating present stuff, including a fastball in the low 90’s. He’ll move way up the prospect lists. LHP Nathan Vineyard (East Cobb Astros): Vineyard was smooth and easy in a 2 inning appearance that left scouts wanting more.

Perfect Game reserves the right to amend these rules at any time for specific tournament play. National High School Federation Baseball Rules will be enforced with the following exceptions. (Updated 11/6/06) IMPORTANT RULES and INFORMATION 1. All games except the SEMI-FINAL and CHAMPIONSHIP games will be played with a strict two hour time limit. No inning can start after two hours. Time will be kept by the umpires and staff. For each team's pool games the home team will be predetermined. In SEMI-FINAL play, games will go to tie-breaker after 7 complete innings. In CHAMPIONSHIP game, teams will continue normal innings until game is completed. 2. All pool games that are tied after 7 innings or the 2 hour time limit will be recorded a tie. A tie is equal to a ½ win and ½ loss for each team. 3. Forfeits: All games must be started with at least 9 players. A game can be finished with 8 players. Once a team establishes it has 8 players it must finish the game with 8 players. The player leaving the original lineup can not return and his spot in the hitting lineup will be recorded as an out. Any intentional forfeit will result in the forfeiting team being eliminated from the tournament. The tournament committee will rule on intentional forfeits. No team should benefit from the result of a forfeit in an unfair manner. This rule could result in a dispute and the tournament committee reserves the right to look at and rule in the fairest possible way.

Great outing, even greater people in Sandy Koufax perfecto against Chicago Cubs By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Thursday, September 3, 2015 (Second of a two-part series on the 50th anniversary of Sandy Koufax’s perfect game against the Cubs on Sept. 9, 1965 in what may have been the greatest pitching duel in history with Chicago lefty Bob Hendley.) On the surface, the Sandy Koufax perfect game is part of baseball mythology, Koufax’s fastball growing ever faster over the decades, the Cubs’ swings even more futile, the lone run scored even more fluky, the only hit in the game even more shaky. Oral history is the main conduit of its memories, and you know how baseball stories get exaggerated as time progresses. It might as well have taken place in the 19th Century, given how 15 years into the TV era — and with the dramatic expansion of network color telecasts beginning the next week — only three innings of halting home-movie film ex- ists (see accompanying story below). Three network-owned stations and four other inde- pendent VHF stations in Los Angeles, all with regular newscasts, declined to film the game despite the Dodgers’ position in the pennant race.
