Miguel Zenon, "Alma Adentro: The Puerto Rican Songbook" (Marsalis Music): Alto saxophonist Zenon has been exploring music of his Puerto Rican heritage for years, but with "Alma Adentro" he arrives at a remarkable musical nexus: the place where jazz improvisation, Puerto Rican popular song and quasi-classical orchestration converge. Julian Lage Group, "Gladwell" (Emarcy): If anyone doubted the promise of guitarist Lage, his sophomore CD confirms it. Transcending specific jazz languages, avoiding conventional instrumentation and stressing beauty of sound above all else, Lage and his quintet produce a richly lyrical music that's as surprising as it is inevitable. Jason Adasiewicz's Sun Rooms, "Spacer" (Delmark Records): Chicago vibraphonist Adasiewicz is reconceiving the way his instrument is played, but that addresses only part of the appeal of his newest CD. Just as important, Adasiewicz has extended the sonic impact of a trio — without relying on mere decibels. Jean-Michel Pilc, "Essential" (Motema): One of the towering jazz pianists of this era, Pilc offers a degree of virtuosity, tonal control and improvisational imagination few can match. Joe Lovano, "Bird Songs" (Blue Note Records): In revisiting works of Charlie Parker, saxophonist Lovano's "Bird Songs" captures the headlong rhythmic momentum and deep-blues expression at the heart of Bird's works. But Lovano transforms Parker's aesthetic as well. Aaron Goldberg and Guillermo Klein, "Bienestan" (Sunnyside Records): The unlikely partnership of Goldberg on piano and Klein on Fender Rhodes keyboard yields surprisingly sonorous results. Guest solos from saxophonists Miguel Zenon and Chris Cheek only enhance the keyboardists' appeal. Jason Stein Quartet, "The Story This Time" (Delmark Records): The bass clarinet does not figure prominently in jazz, but it hasn't had many champions as ardent or accomplished as Stein. Here he presides over music that leaps fearlessly from classic bebop to up-to-the-minute avant-garde and back. Matthew Shipp, "Art of the Improviser" (Thirsty Ear): To mark his 50th birthday, pianist Shipp released this double CD, a colossal statement summing up his free-ranging experiments as improvising soloist and ensemble player. Jane Bunnett & Hilario Duran, "Cuban Rhapsody" (Alma Records): Saxophonist-flutist Bunnett has devoted much of her career to the music of Cuba, and pianist Duran was born and raised in its musical culture. Together, their recording weaves gracefully among Cuban classical, jazz and dance idioms. Tom McDermott, Evan Christopher, "Almost Native: Music from New Orleans & Beyond" (Threadhead Records): 1 of 2 12/3/11 8:31 AM !!!!! b,@/0[& J+%7& .40$4& 57,-.$2& I440+0#& 58/-+04%& /0.& O,%%4-2&S,70&!H4-5-,@H+4&/0.&%74&R+0#"$&PC0/$%C&/0.& 4845%-,0+5/& $"##4$%+0#& %/H8/2& %/@H"-/=H/$$& 8+04$& /0.& 1+#&1/0.2&/@,0#&,%74-$E& 6-+5I8C&64-5"$$+,02&%740&+0%,&%74&J,HH8C&%+%84&%-/5I2&%74& & =..&(+'*6&+$&O+85D$&B+-$%&ZP&B,-&/0&!@4-+5/0&8/H48& %+%84& ,B& 1-"0,D$& 67+8,$,67+5/8& %-/5%2& 6,$$+H8C& B,-& /0.&$45,0.&$,8,&6+/0,&$4$$+,0E&1"..+0#&F/GG&6+/0+$%$& 4_,-5+$+0#& /& $8+%74-C& .4Q+8c& U74054& +%D$& P4H"$$+/0& $7,"8.& %/I4& 0,%4& ,B& %74& Q4%4-/0D$& .+Q4-$4& ,BB4-+0#$2& +@6-4$$+,0$&,B&]4J&S4-$4C&6/+0%4-$2&/&%4570+5/8&7+I4&"6& +058".+0#&7+$&+0Q40%+Q4&/--/0#4@40%$&,B&B/@+8+/-&J,-I$& /&-,5IC&\".$,0&3+Q4-$+.4&-+.#42&/&84+$"-48C&9L"0./C& /0.&B,-#,%%40&#4@$2&+0&/..+%+,0&%,&7+$&$%-+I+0#&,-+#+0/8$E& 5"--C& H-"057d?& 5,@@"%4& %,& ]4J/-I& /0.& L"-@/0= YZ/-/Q/0[& 7/$& H440& B-4A"40%8C& -45,-.4.& ,Q4-& %74& 4$A"42&,Q4-%,04=H8,J0&J7/84=$,0#E&Y]/%"-4&1,C[&#4%$& .45/.4$2& H"%& O+85D$& A"+-IC& +0%4-6-4%/%+,0& 7/$& /& ! Frink, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2016 Ornette Coleman (1930-2015) is frequently referred to as not only a great visionary in jazz music but as also the father of the jazz avant-garde movement. As such, his work has been a topic of discussion for nearly five decades among jazz theorists, musicians, scholars and aficionados. While this music was once controversial and divisive, it eventually found a wealth of supporters within the artistic community and has been incorporated into the jazz narrative and canon. Coleman’s musical practices found their greatest acceptance among the following generations of improvisers who embraced the message of “free jazz” as a natural evolution in style.

Cone Concert Series Saturday, November 21, 2020 8:00 p.m. ET MATTHEW SHIPP PROGRAM THE PIANO EQUATION Matthew Shipp Funding for this concert is provided by the Edward T. Cone Endowment and a grant from the PNC Foundation. ABOUT THE MUSIC David Lang writes: Over the summer I asked Matthew Shipp if he would like to play for us the music from his recent recording The Piano Equation. This album came out towards the beginning of the pandemic and I found myself listening to it over and over—its unhurried wandering and unpredictable changes of pace and energy made it a welcome, thoughtful accompaniment to the lockdown. My official COVID soundtrack. Matthew agreed, but he warned me that what he would play might not sound too much like what I had heard on the recording. This music is improvised, which means that it is different every time. And of course, that is one of the reasons why I am interested in sharing it on our season. We have been grouping concerts under the broad heading of ‘virtuosity’–how music can be designed so that we watch and hear a musical problem being overcome, right before our eyes and ears. Improvisation is a virtuosity all its own, a virtuosity of imagination, of flexibility, of spontaneity.

Some of CARMEN SOUZA AND THEO PASCAL PRESS Quotes over the years See the clipping at www.carmensouzapresskit.blogspot.com CD/DVD_LIVE LAGNY JAZZ FESTIVAL (2014) 5 STARS (CD of the week)"Carmen Souza is one of a kind—an original as rare as a throat singer and as exquisite as a vocalist who combines the best of Billie Holiday and Elis Regina—whose time has certainly come. Carmen Souza’s star is certainly on the rise. Her performances are riveting; she has a sensuous manner and her delicate swaying to the music seems to suggest that her body absorbs the melodies and harmonies of her songs that are surely made deep down in her soul." Raul da Gama, Latin Jazz Network, USA 5 STARS "Une artiste impressionnante.

So with that introduction, we are pleased to announce that as of this issue, the gazette formerly known as AllAboutJazz-New York will now be called The New York City Jazz Record. It is a change that comes on the heels of our separation New York@Night last summer from the AllAboutJazz.com website. To emphasize that split, we felt 4 it was time to come out, as it were, with our own unique identity. So in that sense, a name is very important. But, echoing Shakespeare’s idea, the change in name Interview: Johnny Mandel will have no impact whatsoever on our continuing mission to explore new worlds 6 by Marcia Hillman and new civilizations...oh wait, wrong mission...to support the New York City and international jazz communities. ***For Immediate Release*** Media Contact: Jesse P. Cutler JP Cutler Media 510.338.0881 [email protected] GRAMMY® Award-Winning Doug Beavers Releases New Album Art of the Arrangement Featuring Pedrito Martinez, Ray Santos, Oscar Hernández, Jose Madera, Angel Fernandez, Marty Sheller, Gonzalo Grau, Herman Olivera, Luques Curtis and More! New York, NY -- Tuesday, July 18, 2017 -- On his previous release, 2015’s Titanes del Trombón, the GRAMMY® Award-win- ning Doug Beavers -- as the album’s title suggested -- focused on honoring his fellow trombonists and pioneers such as J.J. John- son, Barry Rogers and Slide Hampton. The recording received universal praise with Jazzwax magazine calling it “absolutely hypnotic” and Latin Jazz Network deeming the release a “precious and significant work.” Publications as prestigious as Downbeat, JAZZIZ and Latino Magazine also joined in the chorus, each providing feature space to this magnificent project that paid tribute to some of the unsung masters of an often underappreciated instrument. At the time of the release of Titanes del Trombón, Beavers took note of the fact that many of the great trombonists of the past were also first-rate arrangers, and that steered him toward the music that now comprises his latest release, Art of the Arrangement (ArtistShare, August 25, 2017). The new collection is an homage to the greatest Latin jazz and salsa arrangers of our time, includ- ing Gil Evans, Ray Santos, Jose Madera, Oscar Hernández, Angel Fernandez, Marty Sheller, and Gonzalo Grau. Through- out the history of Latin jazz, and jazz in general, it’s the arrangers who have shaped the music, and quite often their contributions have been overlooked, or ignored altogether.
