Calvary Or Catastrophe? French Catholicism's First World War Abstract CALVARY OR CATASTROPHE? FRENCH CATHOLICISM’S FIRST WORLD WAR Arabella L. Hobbs Professor Gerald Prince The battlefield crucifixes that lined the Western Front powerfully connected industrialized warfare with the Christian past. This elision of the bloody corporeality of the crucifixion with the bodily suffering wrought by industrial warfare forged a connection between religious belief and modern reality that lies at the heart of my dissertation. Through the poignancy of Christ’s suffering, French Catholics found an explanatory tool for the devastation of the Great War, affirming that the blood of ther F ench dead would soon blossom in rich harvest. This dissertation argues that the story of French Catholicism and the Great War uncovers a complex and often dissonant understanding of the conflict that has become obscured in the uniform narrative of disillusionment and vain sacrifice ot emerge in the last century. Considering the thought to emerge from the French renouveau catholique from 1910 up to 1920, I argue that far from symbolizing the modernist era of nihilism, the war in fact created meaning in a world that had lost touch with its God.

That is why I feel particularly honoured that the Embassy of Bulgaria in Belgium is able to assist the display of Mr. Kovatchev’s new remarkable exhibition “Metaphysical spaces” in Brussels. Fascinated as a child by Salvador Dali and surrealism Valentin Kovatchev developed his own unique style which brings out the beauty and mystery of Orthodox iconography through masterful etching technique. Today celebrating his 60-th birthday with this exhibition we may safely conclude that the artist has established himself as one of the most famous 5 and successful modern Bulgarian painters. The opening of the exhibition “Metaphysical spaces” coincides with the National Day of Bulgaria – the 3rd of March. This is a particularly pleasant way to mark this important event. Many times she foretold a crisis of faith and morals happening in the middle of the 20th Century. Yet Vatican II took place from 1962–65, and was followed by an unprecedented crisis of faith and morals in the Catholic Church that continues today. What are the signs of authenticity for these visions? Firstly, Devotion to Our Lady of Buen Suceso has been practised uninterruptedly in Quito for more than 400 years. Secondly, it was approved by the Bishop of Quito soon after the miraculous painting of the statue in 1610; and in 1991 the Statue received Canonical Coronation with the approval of Rome.     Daily Saints – 10 December Our Lady of Loreto The Holy Family’s house in Nazareth has a complicated and obscure history. What is known is that the knights of the First Crusade took control of Galilee in 1099 and made Nazareth their capital. The Italian Angeli family began to reconstruct the Holy Family’s house when a Muslim army won a key battle in 1187 near Nazareth, forcing all the Europeans to flee. The Angelis disassembled stones of the Holy Family’s house and shipped them to Italy by way of modern-day Croatia. The stones were ultimately reconstructed in 1294–95 in their present location in Loreto, where the labors of the Angelis in bringing the stones by ship turned into the legend that “angels” had scooped up the home in Nazareth and transported it through the air to Loreto. In the succeeding centuries, the small stone house was enclosed within an elaborate marble structure within an ornate papal basilica, which became one of the most visited Marian shrines in the world. Our Lady of Loreto is the title of the Virgin Mary with respect to the Holy House of Loreto. This name is also used her statue displayed inside the Holy House. In the 1600s a Mass and a Marian litany were approved. This "Litany of Loreto" is the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary, one of the five litanies approved for public recitation by the Church. In 1920 Pope Benedict XV declared the Madonna of Loreto patron saint of air travelers and pilots. The statue was granted a Canonical Coronation in 1922 by Pope Pius XI.
