Bristol Old Vic's Tom Morris (War Horse, Swallows & Amazons,) directs the first stage version of Touching the Void, adapted by The Lyceum's David Greig (The Events, The Suppliant Women, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) from the award-winning memoir by Joe Simpson, which also became a BAFTA-winning film. They are joined by Designer Ti Green, Sound Designer and Composer Jon Nicholls, Lighting Designer Chris Davey, Movement Director Sasha Milavic Davies and with casting by Jill Green CDG. This production marks the 30th anniversary of the publication of Joe Simpson’s best-selling memoir, charting his extraordinary struggle for survival on the perilous Siula Grande mountain in the Peruvian Andes. Alongside this struggle, is the appalling dilemma of his climbing partner Simon Yates, perched on an unstable snow-cliff, clinging onto the rope tying him to the severely injured Joe.     Book Reviews 1988 COMPILED BY GEOFFREY TEMPLEMAN Touching the Void Joe Simpson ]onathan Cape, 1988, Pp174, £10·95 In 1985 Joe Simpson and Simon Yates set out to climb the W face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. They succeeded in their objective after three days and started on the descent of the N ridge in atrocious snow conditions. After a night on the ridge they continued their slow progress, breaking through cornices and having short falls, until one such fall resulted in Simpson breaking his leg. Yates started lowering Simpson down the W face, and they had almost reached the bottom when Simpson shot off over an overhanging cliff and was left hanging. After a considerable length of time in which nothing could be done, Yates cut the rope. Giving Simpson up for dead, he made his way back to Base Camp and, during the next three days, sorted out Simpson's belongings, burnt his clothes and prepared to leave camp. It was then that Simpson arrived in a state of exhausted delirium, having escaped from the deep crevasse into which he had fallen and crawled and hopped over the long glacier and moraine. The book recounts the story in a graphic and frank way. The psycho­ logical trauma following the decision to cut the rope; the thoughts engendered by being trapped in a deep crevasse with a broken leg; the embarrassment of the eventual meeting: these things are written about in depth and with a clarity that is only too well understood. You know Simpson will survive, but the tale is like a thriller - I almost said, a cliff-hanger - progressing from one dramatic situation to the next.

    The Blank at the Bottom: Risk and Repetition in Mountain Literature By: Matthew James Dennison A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts School of English February 2020 Abstract The literature of rock climbing and mountaineering is rich, varied and extensive. In its particular combination of characteristics it is unique, yet it has received little in the way of systematic study. As a genre it is marked by the author’s often unspoken acknowledgement that failure, injury or death are the possible outcomes of the climber’s endeavour; risk is fundamental, both as the core motivation for the climber and as one of the underlying (if potentially morbid) reasons why its literature is so compelling. In this thesis I look at how the defining tropes of mountain literature are utilised in a variety of post-1945 non-fictional mountain narratives: Joe Simpson’s Touching the Void, Maurice Herzog’s Annapurna, Dougal Haston’s In High Places and Jim Perrin’s The Climbing Essays. The thesis considers, in particular, how repetition, a key component of these narratives, is deployed in the processing of trauma, and the implications this has for the ways in which we read certain autobiographical narratives; how the tropes we associate with mountain literature – such as the sublime, the figurative quest and the view of the mountaineer as exceptional, a superman – are pressed to serve a particular teleological purpose, once again bearing on our approach to reading these ‘non-fictional’ autobiographical texts; and finally, how the fundamental issue that is at the heart of the genre, the risk of death set against the joy derived from the activity, is rationalised and examined whilst at the same time being impossible to ever satisfactorily resolve.
