They are: Caroline Lucretia Herschel was a German-born British astronomer and the sister of astronomer Sir William Herschel. She is the discoverer of several comets, in particular, the periodic comet 35P/Herschel-Rigollet, which bears her name. Lyman Strong Spitzer, Jr. was an American theoretical physicist, astronomer and mountaineer. He carried out research into star formation, plasma physics, and in 1946, conceived the idea of telescopes operating in outer space. Captain James Cook 1728 - 1779 Captain James Cook was born on November 7th 1728 in a small village near Whitby in South Shields North Yorkshire. Whitby His family were quite poor so when he was 17 he joined the Walker family in Whitby, helping them ship coal along the coast between the River Tyne and the River Thames in London. London During this time he showed a real flair for astronomy and navigation, as well as having excellent sailing skills. Because of his excellent sailing, navigation and astronomy skills Captain Cook joined the Royal Navy in 1755, where he learnt to sail and charter the seas. In 1768 he was appointed commander of HMS Endeavour and sent on a voyage to observe the planet Venus pass in front of the sun. However, the real reason he was sent on this voyage was to discover the ‘Great Southern Continent’ known today as Australia, but this was unofficial and kept a secret from the public. Cook and his crew sailed HMS Endeavour into the Pacific Ocean and first spotted Australia on April 19th 1770. However, Cook and his crew sailed further up the East Coast and finally claimed Australia calling it ‘New South Wales’ on April 28th 1770 when he first set foot on Australian soil at Botany Bay. Botany Bay Then they continued north along the coast. The sea was very rough and they were nearly shipwrecked on the Great Barrier Reef, but they managed to escape without too much damage. They sailed into what is now called Cooktown (after Captain Cook) in far north Queensland, where they did repairs to the ship. -

Rulers of Opinion Women at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, 1799-1812 Harriet Olivia Lloyd UCL Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History of Science 2018 1 I, Harriet Olivia Lloyd, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis examines the role of women at the Royal Institution of Great Britain in its first decade and contributes to the field by writing more women into the history of science. Using the method of prosopography, 844 women have been identified as subscribers to the Royal Institution from its founding on 7 March 1799, until 10 April 1812, the date of the last lecture given by the chemist Humphry Davy (1778- 1829). Evidence suggests that around half of Davy’s audience at the Royal Institution were women from the upper and middle classes. This female audience was gathered by the Royal Institution’s distinguished patronesses, who included Mary Mee, Viscountess Palmerston (1752-1805) and the chemist Elizabeth Anne, Lady Hippisley (1762/3-1843). A further original contribution of this thesis is to explain why women subscribed to the Royal Institution from the audience perspective. First, Linda Colley’s concept of the “service élite” is used to explain why an institution that aimed to apply science to the “common purposes of life” appealed to fashionable women like the distinguished patronesses. These women were “rulers of opinion,” women who could influence their peers and transform the image of a degenerate ruling class to that of an élite that served the nation. -

The Astronomy of Sir John Herschel
Introduction m m m m m m m m m m m Herschel’s Stars The Stars flourish, and in spite of all my attempts to thin them and . stuff them in my pockets, continue to afford a rich harvest. John Herschel to James Calder Stewart, July 17, 1834 n 2017, TRAPPIST-1, a red dwarf star forty light years from Earth, made headlines as the center of a system with not one or two but Iseven potentially habitable exoplanets.1 This dim, nearby star offers only the most recent example of verification of the sort of planetary system common in science fiction: multiple temperate, terrestrial worlds within a single star’s family of planets. Indeed, this discovery followed the an- nouncement only a few years earlier of the very first Earth-sized world orbiting within the habitable zone of its star, Kepler-186, five hundred light years from Earth.2 Along with other ongoing surveys and advanced instruments, the Kepler mission, which recently added an additional 715 worlds to a total of over five thousand exoplanet candidates, is re- vealing a universe in which exoplanets proliferate, Earth-like worlds are common, and planets within the habitable zone of their host star are far from rare.3 Exoplanetary astronomy has developed to the point that as- tronomers can not only detect these objects but also describe the phys- ical characteristics of many with a high degree of confidence and pre- cision, gaining information on their composition, atmospheric makeup, temperature, and even weather patterns. 3 © 2018 University of Pittsburgh Press.
