The Murray South East team participated in the South Australian Country Championships in Port Augusta on the weekend of July 4th-5th and came home with second place. It won its two games on Saturday and this meant SERIOUS ABOUT FOOTBALL? they played in the grand final on Sunday. Proudly supporting Billy Laurie won the Murray South East best player medal for the carnival

TH EASTER OR N N ground. The forward line worked hard to keep the ball in the forward zone and Adam Merrett at full forward, Neil Reeve at centre half forward along with Clint Gallio, Tyler Baker, Ben Gogel and Jake McGrice worked hard to get a winning score. Louis DeMichelle, Jak Ryan and Fraser Thorn were our young ruckman and worked hard to give our on-ball brigade first use of the ball. Brad Bryant, Matt Merrett, Kane Cuthbertson, Stuart Green, Dylan Ayton and Jake Casey held the backline together and provided a lot of rebound from half back and made it hard for the opposition to score. Young players Jack Dawe and Josh Noye rotated on the wing covering the loss of captain Simon Berkefeld during the second game on Saturday. The younger players in the squad showed that they will become the main stays of the team in the coming years. In the grand final we played Southern Districts and what a great grand final it turned out to be. Southern Districts got off to a good start and played the better football in the first half and went into the half time break 20 points up. The coaching staff made some important moves during the break and moved Jack Casey from centre half back into the ruck to cover the injured Louis DeMichelle and this helped the on-ball brigade to get first use on the ball. At the three quarter time break the difference was 14 points and it felt like the team was gaining some important momentum and as the game started for the last quarter they worked hard and began to get on top. Unfortunately a kick for goal with two minutes to go hit the post and then in the dying moments we couldn’t get the ball forward to have a shot on goal. When the final siren blew Southern Districts were in front by 3 points and the quest for back-to-back championships was over. Billy Laurie on the wing was our best player along with on-ballers Ben McIntyre, Brian Fenton and Miles Warmington and Jack Casey in the ruck proved a master stroke by the coaching staff and Clint Gallio had his best game for the carnival. Southern Districts were worthy winners, however the loss of captain Simon Berkefeld who was unable to play in the final and ruckman Louis DeMichelle who was restricted by injury, hurt the side’s structure around the ball. Coach Luke Duncan and assistant Mark Kruger and his support staff were happy with the efforts put in by all players over the whole carnival and look forward to next year with a number of new players in the squad. The following players made the team of the carnival: Ben McIntyre (ruck rover), Adam Merrett (full forward), Brain Fenton and Myles Warmington (half forward flanks), Billy Laurie (wing), and Brett O’Neil (half back flank). These players will represent the SA Country team next year in the annual City verses Country game.
