THE rise of women’s football has been made abundantly clear by the turnout at this year’s North Melbourne next generation trials. About 270 aspiring football stars aged 11 to 15 years were put through their paces at Launceston’s Elphin Sports Centre during the second of three statewide testing clinics on Tuesday. Roos football operations manager Laura Kane said 30 per cent of next generation par- ticipants nationwide come from Tasmania. “We’ve had huge numbers of girls come through, tens and tens and tens more than we did last year,”Kane said. “We had 34 last time and I think we have about 200 registered this time, which is real- ly exciting.” North were allocated Tasmania and parts of Victoria by the AFL in setting up the acad- emies and Kane said it was a great chance for North Melbourne to nurture the state’s top- end talent from a young age. “(What is more important) is that AFL clubs are accessible to young kids and they can see the pathway… not just for playing but for employment opportunities,”she said. “If they can’t see themselves in the game from a young age they think it is a little out of reach.” AFL Tasmania state talent manager Jy Bond said close to 800 participants had regis- tered for this week’s trials and that about 300 players would be selected to take part in an elite eight-week coaching and development program in August. From there the elite will be invited to be- come part of North’s academy along with the likes of 2018 draft prospect Tarryn Thomas. “It’s a great opportunity of our young boys and girls of the state to be a part of something like this,”Bond said. “Any opportunity a young boy or girl can have to experience training and AFL com- bine testing is great. “If we can get them into our program, hopefully they can stay part of it from 11 and 12 right through to a Mariners program with the aim of getting boys and girls drafted.” ThefinaltrialisatMoonahSportsCentre LIGHTNING: Lachlan Oliver, 11, zooms past onlookers at the North Melbourne next generation academy trials at Elphin Sports on Thursday.
