The launch provided the opportunity to thank our corporate and community partners, in particular the TAC and Peter Jackson. Their support is crucial to the success of our premier competitions, which in turn allows the Victorian talent pathway to prosper and continue to be the benchmark nationally. The strength of this pathway was demonstrated at the end of 2014 with 64 Victorians selected in either the NAB AFL National or Rookie Draft . This result highlighted the quality of the TAC Cup Competition and our Victoria Metro and Country Academies and saw eight of the top ten players selected in the National Draft hail from Victorian community clubs. Four VFL players also progressed their careers to the elite level with Kane Lambert and Adam Saad this week upgraded to the senior list of Richmond and the Gold Coast Suns respectively. Both are former TAC Cup players, with Northern Knights and Calder Cannons, and proves the AFL dream does not end if you are not draft ed at the end of your 18th year in the competition. The selection of Lambert and Frankston’s Nic Newman in the Rookie Draft also ensured the continuation of an outstanding statistic. Of the past nine players to win the Peter Jackson VFL Fothergill-Round Medal - awarded to the best U23 player in the VFL - all have now gone on to careers at AFL level. Through the extensive TAC Program players participate in and the education provided by AFL Victoria, TAC Cup regions and VFL clubs, we are confi dent these young Victorians have and will continue to become role models both on and off the fi eld. The launch provided an opportunity to showcase the enormous role AFL Victoria plays in all facets of football, from our premier competitions to community football, which of course underpins the talent pathway. We have upwards of 290,000 participants across our various competitions and programs and it is the amazing work of hard working volunteers in every corner of the state who drive community clubs and ensure football continues to be the sport of choice for Victorians. Fantastic growth continues in female football and 2015 marks AFL Victoria’s second year of managing the Victorian Women’s Football League. We are excited by a 30 per cent increase in teams across the competition and nine new clubs entering the VWFL in 2015. The competition will continue to grow thanks to the huge amount of work being done to provide young girls the opportunity to play in female competitions. The huge growth in community football Youth Girls teams, combined with the six TAC Youth Girls Academies we now have in place in diff erent locations around the state create a pathway that one day down the track may include a National competition. Turning our attention back to the TAC Cup, we welcome the country regions this week for their fi rst game of the season, aft er the metro clubs started us off last weekend. It will be an exciting fi rst round for the country teams with their U16 sides playing curtain raiser games to all three country matches in Geelong, Benalla and Morwell this weekend. Steven Reaper AFL Victoria CEO www.taccup.com.au 03 Double headers There is plenty of great junior football on off er News this weekend with the country under 16 squads all playing double headers with their TAC Cup counterparts. Both the metro and country under 16 carnivals will be played out in the coming weeks with New talent manager for Pioneers spots in the Vic Metro and Vic Country 2015 NAB AFL U16 National Championships teams up for grabs. One of the longest serving staff members in the TAC Cup competition, Bendigo Pioneers talent manager Ray Byrne announced his retirement plans in late February. Byrne’s last day in the role will be on April 10, as the fi ve other country TAC Cup teams converge on Bendigo for Country Round. Byrne, who started his career with AFL Victoria in 1991 as the Gippsland development manager, helped set up Gippsland Power, becoming its fi rst regional (talent) manager. He returned to his home town of Bendigo in 2001 to take on the role of talent manager for the Pioneers, a position he has held for the last 15 years. During Byrne’s time at the helm of the Pioneers their AFL draft ees have included Adam, Troy, Joel and Scott Selwood, Andrew Walker, Robbie Tarrant, Dustin Martin, Jake Stringer and Ollie Wines. Stephen Sharp, who is well known in the Bendigo footballing community, has been announced as Byrne’s successor. A highly experienced football administrator, Sharp also has coaching, playing and development experience. Sharp progressed from committee member, to vice president and then president of Golden Square Football Club between 2002 and 2012. He also coached a number of Golden Square’s under age teams. Prior to that, Sharp was involved with AFL NSW/ACT U16 & U18 National Championship teams. Sharp isn’t the only new face at the Pioneers, a change of head coaches in the off season has seen former Williamstown development coach Brett Henderson take the coaching reins from David Newett. The Pioneers kick off their 2015 season this weekend on the road, travelling to Benella to take on Murray Bushrangers. Soldo returns Ivan Soldo has been added to Northern Knights list again for season 2015 to continue his development as a ruckman. Turning 19 in April, Soldo, a 204cm basketball convert from the ACT is the cousin of Richmond ruckman Ivan Maric. Aft er showing promise as a developing ruckman and playing his fi rst ever game of football for the Knights in 2014, Richmond Football Club signed him on as a three year non registered category B rookie. Viewed as a development player by the Tigers, Soldo will gain crucial match experience in the TAC Cup competition with the Northern Knights. 04 www.vfl .com.au VFL News Rookie elevation for Lambert Could Kane Lambert make his AFL debut in the opening game of the 2015 season as Richmond faces Carlton? The opportunity now awaits him aft er the former Northern Knights, Northern Blues and Williamstown player was elevated to the Tigers senior list. Taken with pick 46 in the 2014 AFL Rookie Draft last December, Lambert has left no doubt that he is up to playing at the elite level aft er playing in all three of Richmond’s NAB Saad now a Challenge matches and averaging 12 disposals a game. senior list Sun “He’s been really impressive,” Richmond coach Damien Hardwick told the club website. TAC Cup Round 2 2 & 3 April 2016 $3.00 Season 2016 kicking into gear Wasn’t it great to have football back last weekend, both at AFL and TAC Cup level? While the next crop of future AFL talent was taking to the field in TAC Cup games throughout Victoria last weekend, it was a highlight of the Easter weekend to see eight draft ees debut in Round 1 of the AFL season – including 2015 Morrish Medal winner Clayton Oliver who claimed the first NAB AFL Rising Star nomination of the season aft er his 22-disposal debut for Melbourne. While the TAC Cup season started last weekend for the best U18 male talent across Victoria, last Monday saw the conclusion of a very successful Youth Girls Academy Challenge for the most promising U18 females across the state. Congratulations to the Dandenong Stingrays, who defeated the Sandringham Dragons in the finale to the month-long tournament. It is pleasing to see TAC support not only the next crop of elite U18 boys but also what will be the next crop of future female AFL footballers via the U18 Youth Girl Academies across eight regions. During the week we celebrated the launch of the Peter Jackson VFL and new VFL Women’s competition. With the launch of a national AFL women’s competition in 2017, it is exciting for AFL Victoria to launch the first VFL Women’s season this weekend. Also at the launch we looked back at the history of the TAC Cup competition, with last week signalling the beginning of its 25th season.

  • AFL VICTORIA RELEASE AFL Victoria Is Particularly Pleased to Again See
AFL VICTORIA RELEASE AFL Victoria is particularly pleased to again see over half of the new talent selected in the NAB AFL Draft come from Victorian football. 36 Victorian players were selected in last night’s NAB AFL Draft, with 33 players recruited from the TAC Cup competition and three from the Peter Jackson VFL. Victorian community football and the talented player pathway produced 55% of new draftees while South Australia produced 21%, Western Australia 18%, Tasmania 5% and Queensland 1%. AFL Victoria General Manager Grant Williams believes the results reflect the strong talent development pathways in Victoria. “The NAB AFL Draft continues to highlight the variety of pathways in which talented players are being developed in Victoria, starting at a local community Club level and working their way up through the talented player pathway either via the TAC Cup or VFL competitions.” Victoria produced eight out of the first 10 draft selections, with Dandenong Southern Stingrays Lachie Whitfield becoming the eleventh number one pick from the TAC Cup competition in its 21 year history, and the fourth Dandenong top pick. Whitfield joined the likes of former Stingrays Jeff White (1994), Travis Johnstone (1997) and Tom Scully (2009) all of whom had their name read out first on AFL Draft night. “The TAC Cup competition continues to be the premier drafting ground for AFL footballers, with over 1,000 players having now been drafted over the 21 years of the competitions existence.” “Congratulations should go to each of AFL Victoria’s Talent Managers who manage quality programs in each of Victoria’s twelve regions that field teams in the TAC Cup competition.
