Today is March 25th, and we’re here at The Citadel for the Veteran’s History Project. And today I’m going to be interviewing Mr. William Leonard. Would you want to start off by telling us about your childhood here in Charleston beforehand? WILLIAM LEONARD: Let’s start by that I guess. I was born in Charleston, 97 Tradd Street, in May 17th, 1925. I was born into a family, two sisters, older sisters, and one brother, and I was the youngest in the family. And my mother was from the old, one of the old families of Charleston. And my father was what we call a maverick in Charleston. He was a fella that was born in Alabama—Birmingham, Alabama—and he came here when he was two years old in 19—in 1896. And he was never a Charlestonian. But he married into a Charleston family so that made him be, be, in. He always—my father doesn’t like Charlestonians. SB: Very well, fair enough. WL: But anyway, made him a little [bit of an] outsider. I went to local schools. And ended up by going to a school in Mt. Pleasant because they started a new school over there, and they had girls in there, and I was 16 years old and was quite interested in girls. Graduated from over there in 1943, and immediately my father put me in The Citadel.

I’m sick of this crap, tired of begging. Today is the day. When I get my car, I’m gonna drive and drive—one thousand miles—and never look back.” *** Kim picks me up, and we drive in silence. She’s driven me too many places not to know I’m upset. The trip to Russelton is long, but it helps me collect my thoughts before the big purchase: driver’s license, money, Blue Book. “Pull in here,” I say, pointing to a gas station beside the road. Other care rituals involved the preparation of the family and the eldest child as well as the home, the body, and the mind of the pregnant woman, and the choice of destination of the placenta. Final considerations: We must understand the birth process beyond the biological perspective, considering women and their family as a whole, within a cultural context with their beliefs and values.

I wish glasses were just literally the plural of glass. Then I could drink some water. Saying that, there is no guarantee in their literality that they’ll be filled with water. OK. I’m up now. Thank God that my childish wit puts a smile on my face. Opening eyes. It’s not as bad as I feared. Stings a bit, but I have enough time to run to the shower, wash my face and drink some water. Oh, something smells really nice. I wonder what she’s making for me today. OK. Quickly. Get dressed. Suit. Again a suit. I hate wearing suits. It can get so boring. I wish I had five hundred suits. Like Elton John. What? No. I do not want to have five hundred suits like Elton John. What the hell am I talking about? You idiot! Where is your mind this morning? The large numbers of people losing their lives turned this issue into a highly mediatized topic, which received the label “crisis.” These numbers became the center of a political and media debate in which displaced people were predominantly underrepresented and misrepresented. This thesis is an ethnographic account that attempts to paint a more humanistic picture of the so-called “European refugee crisis.” The work is composed of seven intimate ethnographies that bring into relief the powerful life stories of particular people who are generally left out of official and media reports about contemporary migration from the Global South to the Global North. By focusing on the personal stories of these seven individuals, this thesis sheds light on the social, historical, economic, and political dimensions of the contemporary “European Refugee Crisis” without losing sight of the people most affected by it.
