1999 Game-by-Game Recaps May 22, vs. Emmanuel (GA) College The top-seeded Cougars finished their season with a 4-1 victory over fifth-seeded Emmanuel to claim the 1999 National Christian College Athletic Association national title. After losing its first game of the tournament, MVNC won five straight games to claim their unprecedented fifth NCCAA title. Andy Heimbach (13-2) allowed just four hits and one earned run over seven innings as he set a new single-season school record for victories (13). He also struck out eight batters. Meanwhile, Scott Crawford paced the offense by going 3-for-3. Chris Stanifer was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, and he was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Heimbach, Chris Iceman, and Jeff Lavin. May 22, vs. Emmanuel (GA) College MVNC, the top seed, battled back through the loser's bracket to knock off fifth-seeded Emmanuel 7-2 in the first championship game at the 1999 National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament. The Cougars pounded out 12 hits as Chris Stanifer, Jeff Lavin, Scott Crawford, Chris Iceman, and Jeff Wine each had two hits. Mark Coulter (3-3) picked up the victory as he allowed just four hits, two walks, and two earned runs to go along with two strikeouts as MVNC forced a second championship game. May 21, vs. Faulkner (AL) University The top-seeded Cougars stayed alive as they eliminated second-seeded Faulkner 4-2 in the loser's bracket finals of the 1999 National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament. After trailing 2-0 at the end of the first inning, MVNC rallied with two runs in both the fifth and seventh innings for the win. Matt Triplett (4-3) allowed just five hits, two walks, and two earned runs while striking out six batters to pick up the victory. Jeff Lavin paced the offense by going 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs batted in. Chris Stanifer and Mark Coulter also added two hits apiece. May 20, vs. Oakland City (IN) University Top-seeded MVNC avenged an earlier loss to Oakland City as the Cougars eliminated the eighth-seeded Oaks from the 1999 National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament with a 5-1 victory. Jeremiah Armstrong (7-5) notched the win as he surrendered four hits, four walks, and one earned run. He also struck out six batters. Meanwhile, the Cougar offense pounded out 10 hits led by Chris Stanifer and Matt Alison with two hits apiece. May 20, at Indiana Wesleyan University The top-seeded Cougars eliminated Indiana Wesleyan, the host and tenth seed, 4-2 in the loser's bracket of the 1999 National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament. Dave Byard (10-1) gave up five hits, three walks, and one earned run as he picked up the win with six strikeouts. Chris Iceman, Mark Coulter, and Jeff Lavin paced the offensive attack with two hits apiece. May 19, vs. Oakland City (IN) University MVNC, the top seed, fell to eighth-seeded Oakland City 5-2 in the first round of the 1999 National Christian College Athletic Association National Tournament. Andy Heimbach (12-2) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but the Oaks used three hits, two walks, and a hit batsman to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 5-2 lead. Heimbach allowed just four hits and three walks while striking out eight batters. Matt Alison and Chris Iceman each had an RBI-single as the Cougars managed just six hits. May 14, GENEVA (PA) COLLEGE The top-seeded Cougars won the 1999 National Christian College Athletic Association East Region Tournament with a 4-0 victory over third-seeded Geneva in the championship game. Jeremiah Armstrong (6-5) tossed a two-hit shutout as he struck out nine batters and issued two walks. Jason Hall went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs to lead the way offensively, while Chris Stanifer added two hits to set the single-season school record with 83 hits. May 13, GENEVA (PA) COLLEGE MVNC, the top seed, rallied for a 9-2 victory over third-seeded Geneva in the 1999 National Christian College Athletic Association East Region Tournament. Andy Heimbach (12-1) allowed just two hits, one walk, and one earned run with nine strikeouts. He set new school records for strikeouts in a season (125) and strikeouts in a career (256), while also tying the single-season victory mark. Offensively, Scott Crawford went 3-for-4 to pace the Cougars, and Chris Iceman and Jason Hall added two hits apiece. May 13, MALONE COLLEGE The top-seeded Cougars eliminated second-seeded Malone 11-2 from the 1999 National Christian College Athletic Association East Region Tournament. Dave Byard (9-1) tossed a one-hitter with seven strikeouts to pick up the victory as he gave up six walks and two earned runs. Chris Stanifer went 3-for-4 to tie the MVNC single-season record with 81 hits. Jeff Lavin and Joel Laslo also recorded three hits apiece, and Matt Alison contributed two hits to the winning attack. May 7, vs. Shawnee State University MVNC, the second seed, fell 8-4 to third-seeded Shawnee State in the title game of the 1999 American Mideast Conference Tournament. Mark Coulter (2-3) suffered his second loss of the day as he worked six innings and gave up eight hits, two walks, and five earned runs with two strikeouts. Coulter pitched a total of 10 1/3 innings on the day. John Freese and Kevin Kandra each pitched one inning in relief as they each allowed one earned run. Chris Stanifer paced the offense by going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Scott Crawford also posted two hits. May 7, vs. Shawnee State University In the first championship game, the second-seeded Cougars fell 9-8 in 12 innings to third-seeded Shawnee State to force a second title game at the 1999 American Mideast Conference Tournament. Six MVNC errors led to four unearned runs, and the Cougars also hit into five double plays. Mark Coulter (2-2) suffered the loss in relief despite pitching 4 1/3 innings in which he allowed just four hits, one walk, and one unearned run. Matt Triplett started and worked 7 1/3 innings in which he gave up 15 hits, three walks, and five earned runs. MVNC's offense pounded out 20 hits led by Chris Stanifer and Joel Laslo with four hits apiece. May 6, at Ohio Dominican College MVNC, the second seed, pounded out a season-high 25 hits on its way to an 18-7 victory over top-seeded Ohio Dominican in the winner's bracket finals of the 1999 American Mideast Conference Tournament. Jeremiah Armstrong (5-5) tossed a complete game as he allowed 10 hits, four walks, and five earned runs with six strikeouts. Chris Stanifer led the offense by going 4-for-6 with two RBI and three runs. Scott Crawford, Chris Iceman, Jeff Lavin, Joel Laslo, Matt Alison, and Jeff Wine all added three hits apiece. May 5, vs. Shawnee State University The second-seeded Cougars rallied from a 3-0 deficit to knock off third-seeded Shawnee State 5-3 in the second round of the 1999 American Mideast Conference Tournament. Dave Byard (8-1) struck out a season-high 11 batters as he tossed a complete game and allowed just five hits, three walks, and three earned runs. Jeff Lavin paced the offense by going 3-for-4, while Chris Stanifer and Jason Hall added two hits apiece as MVNC advanced to the winner's bracket championship of the double elimination event. May 5, vs. Tiffin University MVNC, the second seed, broke open a 6-5 game with six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Cougars went on to beat fifth-seeded Tiffin 12-6 in the first game of the 1999 American Mideast Conference Tournament. Andy Heimbach (11-1) picked up the victory as he allowed eight hits, three walks, and four earned runs over eight innings with nine strikeouts. Mark Coulter worked the final inning and gave up one hit and one run while recording one strikeout. Chris Stanifer, Matt Alison, and Jeff Wine each pounded out two hits to lead the 10-hit Cougar attack. May 3, KENYON COLLEGE Three Cougar pitchers combined on a one-hitter as MVNC blanked Knox County rival Kenyon College 10-0 in a non-conference game. Aaron Holt started and worked three perfect innings with three strikeouts. Jeremiah Armstrong (4-5) followed with two hitless innings in which he gave up two walks with one strikeout as he picked up the win. John Freese allowed just a one-out single in the seventh as he struck out one batter in his two innings of work. Meanwhile, the Cougars pounded out 13 hits led by Jeff Lavin's 3-for-3 performance. May 1, GENEVA (PA) COLLEGE Junior Dave Byard tossed his second career no-hitter and the team's second of the week as MVNC nipped Geneva 1-0 in the second game of an American Mideast Conference doubleheader. Byard (7-1) allowed just two walks over seven innings while striking out eight batters. Jeff Wine led the Cougar offense by going 2-for-2 and scoring the game's only run. Chris Stanifer was 1-for-3 with an infield single that drove in Wine. May 1, GENEVA (PA) COLLEGE The Cougars combined good pitching and timely hitting as MVNC downed Geneva 8-1 in the first game of an American Mideast Conference twinbill.
