01:15 DocFilm The Democracy of the Gullible - The Internet Paradox

Conspiracy theories are spreading rapidly on the Internet. And they find an audience that believes them. Scientists are studying why people have a tendency to believe nonsense is true. The Internet has profoundly changed our thinking in less than two decades. No other medium has manipulated human behavior to such an extent. The Internet can be a blessing - but also a curse. Many people give the same weight to unfiltered and unfounded opinions on the Internet as they do to journalistic content that has been checked for its accuracy. Inspired by Gérald Bronner's bestseller "The Democracy of the Gullible," the film examines our brains’ natural predisposition to believe in enigmatic conspiracy myths. What criteria and patterns are behind them? And if the brain is so easily influenced, do facts and knowledge stand any chance against blind faith?

01:15 DocFilm The Red Children - Childhood under Mao

Hundreds of foreigners were involved in Mao's Cultural Revolution. Their children were raised as young communists. But as the class struggle in China escalated, the "Great Helmsman" started to question their unwavering loyalty to the "New China." Their parents came from all over the Western world - from New York, London, Paris and Berlin. In China at the time of the Cultural Revolution, they held important positions in the emerging society such as consultants for Beijing’s Urban Planning Department or Mao’s private English teacher. But the children themselves were raised differently - to love Communist China and its leader, Mao Tse-Tung and they attended local Chinese schools and joined the "Red Guards." But when Mao turned on the intellectuals he claimed were critical of the Cultural Revolution, the Party started to question their unwavering commitment to the "New China." Many were imprisoned, while others were sent to labor camps. "Red Children" tells their stories and combines personal experience with the historical background of the Chinese Cultural Revolution.

01:15 DocFilm The Secret of Mona Lisa

Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" is probably the world’s most famous painting. But whose portrait actually is it? There are two clues to the identity of the mysterious young woman, but they are mutually exclusive. Can the riddle ever be solved? Every year, millions of visitors view the portrait exhibited in the legendary Louvre in Paris. But what makes the "Mona Lisa" so special? Who is hidden behind this smiling and yet sad face? Who was Leonardo's model? Or is she even the imaginary image of an ideal beauty? Experts have been wrestling with this question for centuries. There seems to be evidence for two explanations. Both variants have been handed down in writing, but they are not compatible. The most recognized theory goes back to the biographer Giorgio Vasari. According to him, the portrait is of Lisa del Giocondo, the wife of a Florentine silk merchant who had commissioned the work from Leonardo in 1503. But this is contradicted by a note of the chronicler Antonio de Beatis dating back to 1517, in which da Vinci states that he produced the painting at the request of Giuliano de' Medici. The artist said it was an imaginary representation de' Medici's mistress Pacifica Brandani, with whom de’Medici had an illegitimate son. Within the community researching Leonardo today, both theories have their supporters. Using elaborate reconstructions, original locations and scientific methodology, this documentary delves deep into the time of Leonardo da Vinci

22:02 Faith Matters Religious Resistance - Christians Against Far-Right Vigilantes

Far-right vigilantes have become a familiar sight in many German cities in recent years. They claim to be maintaining law and order, but in reality they are striking fear into the hearts of law-abiding residents. A vigilante group calling itself "First Class Crew — Steele Boys" takes over the streets of Steele each week, a suburb of Essen in western Germany. Sometimes the vigilantes are twenty-strong; other times as many as one hundred. Most of them are Rockers or Rowdies, and their presence strikes fear into the hearts of law-abiding residents. Steele is not even a dangerous area; the crime rate has been dropping steadily over the past ten years. But now these so-called militias have also started threatening anybody opposed to them — on the Internet and in public. For they are being met with courageous opposition from a counter-group calling itself "Steele Stays Mixed." Residents, churches, clubs, political parties and unions have united to protest either in silent marches or with singing against the far-right. The vigilantes in Essen have links to groups in the nearby towns of Herne, Mönchengladbach and Düsseldorf. But German police have also uncovered nationwide far-right networks, and the Essen group is under surveillance by the national security services. In other German towns the groups are variously called "Concerned Citizens" or — more obviously nationalistic — "Brotherhood Germany." Reporters Jule Sommer and Udo Kilimann have observed the development of the Essen vigilante movement for more than a year, and in this report they show how resistance to the far-right has grown under the auspices of the Lutheran Church.

01:15 DocFilm The Shah and the Ayatollah

Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi was ousted during a revolution led by the Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979. The Shah’s fall marked the end of more than 2500 years of the monarchy in Iran and the formerly western-oriented state became an Islamic republic. The documentary tells the men’s life stories and the tale of more than three decades of rivalry. The Shiite cleric Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini became a staunch opponent of the Shah’s shortly after he ascended the throne in the 1940s. Khomeini continued to challenge the Iranian monarch throughout his reign. One of the high-points of their clash was in 1963, during a major modernization project known as the "White Revolution.” Another came in 1978, when Khomeini turned the tables on the Shah and seized power in Tehran. Once exiled by the Shah, he became the leader of the Islamic Revolution and the favorite of all those who felt deceived by the monarchy. Islamic fundamentalism emerged victorious from the struggle to create new challenges for global politics. The documentary shows a great deal of little known archive material and interviews eyewitnesses, historians, representatives of the Shah’s regime and allies of Khomeini. Among those we talks to are Iran’s last queen, Farah Diba; the first elected president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Abolhassan Banisadr; former German Economics Minister Hans Friderichs; and a one-time Khomeini follower, Hassan Yussefi Eshkevari.

01:15 DocFilm Waterworld - Living with Climate Change

Sea levels are rising faster and faster, threatening 700 million people who live on the world’s coasts. Will water become the habitat of the future? Visionary projects for a life with the tides are forging ahead worldwide. Experts forecast that by 2100, sea levels will be two meters higher than they are today. This could force 40 percent of the world’s population out of their homes, for example, in Mumbai, Tokyo, Guangzhou or Bangladesh. The US won’t be spared either. Miami, New Orleans and New York would also have to be evacuated. Entire city districts would be under water. Climate change would drastically alter our metropolitan areas. That's why ideas that originated in science fiction have now becoming reality. Floating and underwater buildings could become places of refuge. What sounds like a utopia is soon to become reality. The first pioneers are already living in floating neighborhoods. Could the South Pacific paradise of Tahiti also be saved in this way? This is still all tantalizing luxury. Visionary hotel operators offer rooms with an underwater view. Or dinner during which fish and marine life are a feature in floating restaurants. Many of these futuristic plans involve water. Will we be farming on the sea? Will the "SeaOrbiter” floating research station designed by Parisian architect Jacques Rougerie get underway soon? Or will we walk through seaports on floating boulevards?

01:15 DocFilm The Black Tears of the Sea - The Lethal Legacy of Wrecks

Time bombs are ticking on the world’s sea beds. During World War II, 6,300 vessels were sent to the bottom. For years, they have been rusting beneath the waves and leaking toxic oil into the oceans. The biggest oil spill in history is imminent. Experts estimate that the wrecks could hold up to 15 million tons of fuel, posing a threat to both holidaymakers and wildlife. This documentary takes viewers to Poland’s Baltic coast, to Norway, the USA and the Pacific Ocean. It accompanies scientists who are investigating how heavily the seabed has in some places already been contaminated by leaking oil, observing the rotting wrecks, developing danger scenarios and issuing warnings: the oil from several sunken ships urgently needs to be pumped out. There is still time to safely dispose of the sea’s "black tears." But, despite all the warnings, so far very few governments are prepared to take action. Although pumping out the wrecks is technically possible, it would be a complex and expensive process. But we are at the start of a critical phase. After decades of corrosion in salty seawater, sometimes the slightest vibration is enough to cause the steel hulls of the sunken warships to split open. Marine researchers, coastguards and salvage experts worldwide agree the question is not if, but when, further massive oil spills from World War II wrecks will cause an environmental disaster.

01:15 DocFilm Better Brain Health - We Are What We Eat

Chocolate reduces stress. Fish stimulates the brain. Is there any truth to such popular beliefs? The findings of researchers around the world say yes: It appears we really are what we eat. A study in a British prison found that inmates who took vitamin supplements were less prone to violent behavior. And in Germany, a psychologist at the University of Lübeck has shown that social behavior is influenced by the ingredients consumed at breakfast. But what really happens in the brain when we opt for honey instead of jam, and fish rather than sausage? Scientists around the world are trying to find out. Neuro-nutrition is the name of an interdisciplinary research field that investigates the impact of nutrition on brain health. Experiments on rats and flies offer new insight into the effects of our eating habits. When laboratory rats are fed a diet of junk food, the result is not just obesity. The menu also has a direct influence on their memory performance. The role of the intestinal flora has been known for some time, but scientists are currently discovering other relationships. So-called "brain food" for example: The Mediterranean diet that’s based on vegetables and fish is said to provide the best nutrition for small grey cells. Omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish, for example, protect the nerve cells and are indispensable for the development of the brain - because the brain is also what it eats!

01:15 DocFilm A Postcard from Pyongyang - Travelling through North Korea

This documentary provides a rare glimpse of change in the notoriously closed country. Filmmakers Gregor Möllers and Anne Lewald discretely shot the video on trips to North Korea in 2013 and 2017, when they were not allowed autonomy or spontaneity. Despite the fact that their itinerary was arranged for them in advance and guides chaperoned them everywhere, the two Berliners found a way to register their impressions. They depict a city lacking authenticity, a country longing for reunification and a people shaped by Juche beliefs and socialist propaganda. In a society steeped in obfuscation and spectacle, where deception is necessary for perception and expression, the filmmakers were forced to play a double role, secretly recording without permission while also genuinely relating to their hosts. By blending travelogue and espionage, A Postcard from Pyongyang captures what happens when you rely solely on what you see, not what you’re told, and reveals a reality Kim Jong-Un’s regime doesn’t want foreigners to see.

22:02 DocFilm Bohemian Switzerland by Rail

A train journey through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains between Germany and the Czech Republic. Peculiar rock formations and the river Elbe shape this beautiful region. Since the mid 19th century, a railway line has been meandering through its valleys. In 2014, a new rail connection was completed: the National Park line connects the Czech Republic to Germany. It runs from Děčín to Rumburk via Bad-Schandau, Sebnitz, and Dolní Poustevna. The train conductors are all bilingual and happy to answer passengers’ questions about the area and its people. This film takes viewers from Dresden to Dìèín. It makes a detour on the National Park line through the rocky landscapes of Bohemian Switzerland. See the enchanted valleys that inspired romantic-era painters, and discover Edmundsklamm gorge on the German-Czech border, and its protected wildlife. The documentary also digs deep into the history of brown coal, which once brought the region industry and prosperity.

01:15 DocFilm Deadly Greed - The Ivory Trade

Greed for ivory is rapidly reducing the number of African savanna elephants. Once there were more than ten million; today there are only around 350,000. Their ivory is especially sought after in Asia. Ivory carvings are considered a status symbol among the rich, especially in Asia. Trade between Africa and Asia is booming despite strict laws and prohibitions. At the same time, the population of Africa is exploding. Four billion people are expected to live south of the Sahara by the end of the century. Conflicts of interest with nature are inevitable. Providing sustainable protection for elephants will therefore require more than just banning the trade in ivory. Rescue for Africa’s elephants could come from the vastness of Siberia. In the thawing permafrost of the Arctic lie unexpected treasures: the tusks of millions of mammoths. They can be traded legally and are of the same quality as ivory from elephants. The film tells the story of elephant and mammoth ivory, looks at the legal and illegal trade, asks whether ivory from the extinct ice age giants could save their endangered cousins in Africa from being wiped out. Additionally, it explores whether some elephant hunting could be allowed to maintain a natural balance in some regions of Africa.

01:15 DocFilm The Truth about Lying

People lie - usually several times a day. Lying is considered immoral, but we've been built for it. And we are not alone. Dishonesty is an integral part of the social world, and numerous animal species are also skilled deceivers. People lie between two and 80 times a day. That may sound like a lot, but not all lies are equal. White lies are often a means of being polite, or of not offending someone. They help lubricate social interactions, and maintain harmonious coexistence. Black lies, on the other hand, are told with the intent to deceive, or for self-interest. Scientists have discovered that the brain actually adapts to dishonesty. The more someone lies, the less that person’s brain reacts. But humans are not the only species capable of dishonesty. Many animals also cheat. Especially social animals, such as pigs. Scientists from the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, have been researching dishonesty among pigs, and found interesting results. Indeed, it seems that lying and cooperation evolved in parallel. When it comes to humans, children as young as five are already capable of cheating. We tend to think that dishonesty is immoral, but the ability to lie signals healthy cognitive development in children. Scientists have long been searching for a way to reliably detect lying. This would be an asset in criminal investigations. However, classic lie detector tests, which measure pulse, heart rate, respiration, and skin conductance are inaccurate. But a scientist in Germany has managed to devise a questioning technique with which he is achieving surprisingly accurate results with a lie detector. And researchers in Granada have found that a person’s face and hands change temperature when they are lying. So can dishonesty be reliably measured using a thermal imaging camera?

01:15 DocFilm The Friendly Islamists? - Following the Path of the Gülen Movement

The Gülen movement was once a pillar of the Erdogan regime in Turkey. But after the attempted coup in 2016, thousands of its members were arrested or forced to feel abroad. But the movement lives on despite official persecution. The influence of the Gülen movement within the Turkish state was huge and had President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's explicit approval. But now the Gulenists are "Public Enemy Number One." They reportedly have groups in 160 countries and run more than 1500 "educational institutions," healthcare facilities and media organizations. Critics see the Gülen movement as an shady Islamist organization with its sights on political power. But the movement has many supporters among Turkish Muslims abroad - in Europe, and since the 1990s, in Islamic countries in Africa and among Muslim intellectuals in the USA as well. Until recently, the Gulenists were viewed as offering a democratic alternative to the Salafists and other hard-line Islamists. But German authorities have recently started to take a more critical view. The German Foreign Office has become alarmed about infiltration strategies and "manifestations of organized crime” within the Gülen movement, which has chosen Germany as its European headquarters. A number of cases of harassment of critical journalists have also come to light. Is the Gülen movement a radical sect and a threat to Europe - or. as it claims to be, a peaceful organization promoting education and international understanding? This documentary examines the Gulenist movement and talks to its representatives and critics.

01:15 DocFilm Fly Rocket Fly - Lutz Kayser’s Dreams of Space

Once upon a time, West German engineer Lutz Kayser and the Zairean dictator Mobutu Seso Seko wanted to conquer space. But in the middle of the Cold War, German rockets over the rainforest unsettled the superpowers and threatened the daring vision. It sounds like a mixture of political thriller and adventure story, yet it is based on real events: In 1969, Lutz Kayser and other members of a student consortium won a research contract from the German government to develop alternative forms of propulsion for the European rocket program. Kayser and a group of dyed-in-the-wool tinkerers built a cheap rocket that not only had a simple design, but it even used a VW wiper motor to control the injection of fuel into the engines. During the research project, the team held a total of 2,000 combustion tests at its launch pad near Heilbronn. When the German government cut funding for the project in the early 1970s, Kayser founded OTRAG (Orbital Transport und Raketen Aktiengesellschaft), the world's first private space company, in 1975. Looking for ways to get his project off the ground, Kayser was introduced to dictator Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mobutu had a weakness for large-scale megalomaniac projects, German technology - and space travel. A rocket launch site in Africa would have been a win-win situation for both sides. OTRAG could test its rockets, and take the attention-seeking strongman into space so the could one day use satellites to tighten his control over the central African country. Mobutu provided OTRAG with an area the size of the former Communist East Germany, where it set up its own spaceport - a German Cape Canaveral in the middle of the Congolese jungle. But OTRAG’s successful launch of several rockets at the end of the 1970s triggered a crisis. At the height of the Cold War, the last thing the superpowers wanted to see were German rockets - even if they were only flying over the African jungle.

01:15 DocFilm Opera - A Tough Business

The stars of the opera world - Anna Netrebko, Cecilia Bartoli, Jonas Kaufmann, Rolando Villazon - all started out small against stiff competition. How did they make the great leap onto the world stage? How do you become an opera star? Why do some people make it and others don't? This documentary looks into these questions and presents singers at various stages of their careers, as well as directors, conductors and artistic directors. And it finds a good voice alone is no longer enough to make it as an opera singer. Today, strong nerves and good looks are at least as important, not to mention social networks. Getting a place in the ensemble of an opera house is like hitting the jackpot in the lottery. However, new entrants only gross about 2,000 euros a month - and that after six years of study. Even stagehands earn more.

22:02 DocFilm The Faroes - Solitary Islands and Lonely Hearts

Around 50 thousand people live on the Faroe Islands. But too many of them are men. Faroese women go abroad to study. Many don’t return. Men stay behind to live off the sea. Now the islands are enjoying a growing influx of women from the . Antonette gets her folk dress out of the closet. Like a native Faroese woman, she’s getting ready for the Ólavsøka, the national holiday of the Faroe Islands. The 36-year-old actually comes from the metropolis of Manila. But life in the Philippines was too loud, stressful and uncertain for her. Antonette sought security and safety and married Regin Egholm a year ago. Her first daughter was born nine months later. Her new happiness on the other side of the world is complete. Antonette is one of about 200 Filipinas who now live on the islands in the North Atlantic. Rain instead of sun, dried fish instead of tropical fruits - at first, their new life on the edge of Europe was a culture shock for many of them. And yet Filipinas and Faroe Islanders often share the same values. Family, faith and tradition are important in both cultures. These values are often reason enough for young, liberated Faroese women to leave. The only university is too small and most men too old-fashioned. As a result, there are about 15 percent more men than women living on the islands today. The government is trying to make the Faroes more attractive. New courses of study and more jobs are supposed to draw Faroese women back to the islands. But in the meantime, women from the Philippines are settling in their new home, where they form the largest ethnic minority on the islands, closely followed by women from .

01:15 DocFilm Inside the Real Saudi Arabia - Why I Had to Leave

The Saudi royal family says it is modernizing and has given women more rights. But has the promised liberalization brought genuine change? British fashion designer Basma Khalifa finds out on a visit to her aunts in Saudi Arabia. A daughter of immigrants from Saudi Arabia, Basma Khalifa never really felt quite at home in London. Torn between two cultures, she decides to visit Saudi Arabia to discover if she could actually live there.

Once there, Basma quickly discovers how difficult it is for her to adjust to life in the deeply conservative Muslim society of her parent’s former homeland. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has begun to liberalize the kingdom, but the murder of exiled government critic Jamal Khashoggi shows a dark side of the new Saudi Arabia.

Even in "liberal" Jeddah, Basma finds her life hampered by many strictures and taboos. This documentary follows her as she delves into Saudi society and gains a unique perspective on daily life in a country that turns its face inward. Viewers also experience how Basma runs afoul of Saudi authorities who have her under surveillance.

01:15 DocFilm 100 Million Views

With dark humor and caustic wit, 100 Million Views uncovers the dirty secrets of going viral. This film reveals the truth about a platform that promised transparency and democracy, but hides an exploitative, censored, unaccountable underbelly. After years making YouTube videos without success, Itamar Rose sets out to discover the secrets of what makes a video go viral. Along the way he meets YouTube stars past and present, from early sensations such as the creators of "The Double Rainbow" and "David After Dentist," to the modern breed of Influencers who have audience building, algorithmic tampering and fan engagement tuned to a fine art. Itamar’s quest reveals an industry where even viral success stories begin life with views bought from "click farms." Experts describe the role of marketing experience and partnerships beyond the reach of ordinary YouTubers. They tell of boot camps for the next generation of fame-hungry children and how even the most unassuming creators are drawn into cynical practices. This journey takes viewers into the heart of the YouTube machine, all the while asking difficult questions about what’s become of the platform that was supposed to give everyone a voice.

01:15 DocFilm SOS Amazon - Apocalypse in the Rainforest

A raging fire devastated Brazil’s Amazon rain forest in the summer of 2019. Images of the blaze frightened experts and politicians around the globe. Protecting the unique ecosystem is essential for climate conservation. The sight of forests in the Amazon burning in 2019 struck fear into anyone who saw it. Suddenly, the threat to the climate was tangible. The trees some call the "world’s lungs" were going up in flames. Suddenly, politicians, journalists, and the general population agreed that something had to be done. Because without the Amazon, the world has a big existential problem. In terms of species diversity, the Amazon river and surrounding forest are one of the earth’s richest regions. It’s also home to many indigenous peoples, whose homes are seriously threatened by degradation of the forest. This documentary depicts the current humanitarian and environmental disaster and goes in search of reasons why this unique ecosystem is being destroyed. Satellite images from Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research, the INPE, form the framework for the film. A renowned scientist and former head of the institute, Ricardo Galvão, was fired by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who said the images damaged Brazil’s reputation and were flawed anyway. Yet the data from 2019 shows a drastic rise in illegal clear cutting. Filmmaker Albert Knechtel went to the region to take stock. He traveled across Brazil, from the Bolivian border to Xingu, traversing the crisis-stricken area and meeting local experts, critics, and residents who describe the situation. Together they sharpen understanding of the region, which is at a crossroads. The next direction the Amazon takes will influence the fate of the entire world.

01:15 DocFilm Ghana - Business on the Go

Ghana is the second largest cocoa producer in the world. Still, many Ghanaians have yet to taste chocolate: The precious commodity is largely for export. The cocoa farmers in this resource-rich country also usually see little of the profit. Crossing the Lake Volta in central with ferries and water taxis can be a dangerous business. Many farmers from remote villages cross the world's largest artificial lake several times a week to sell their produce at local markets. The journey can be tricky, especially during storms or if they are transporting livestock. The belief that death is the gateway to eternal life is deeply rooted in the West African country, and funerals are an important social event there. Coffins symbolize the deceased’s profession - for example, shaped like fish, sewing machines, bibles, bush taxis or cocoa beans - and funerals are rarely a gloomy affair and often more like a carnival. The splendor of the funeral and the number of mourners attending reflect the standing of the deceased’s family in the community.

01:15 DocFilm Morocco’s Warrior Women

Women are taking over the Fantasia, a male-dominated equestrian event in Morocco. Once a year, riders in Médiouna near Casablanca celebrate the ancient martial arts of their ancestors. Now, Moroccan women are changing the rules. It’s like a dream from "A Thousand and One Nights." The Fantasia, also known as the "Game of Powder," is underway. More than 500 riders join in the traditional competition, which until now has been dominated by men. But Moroccan society is changing. Afrae Ben Bih is 25 years old. She lives near the Moroccan capital, Rabat. Her father taught her to ride when she was a child. It was back then she discovered her passion for the Fantasia. She set her heart on it and after lots of hard work and support from her parents, Afrae at 18 founded the first female equestrian unit and faced her critics. Only a few of the original women remain, because many left the group when they wed. Afrae relied on social media to develop contacts and set up a new unit. Sanaa El Moustache is one of the few women on the team who doesn’t come from a family of riders continuing an equestrian tradition. For a long time, she even kept her passion secret from her parents. This documentary follows Afrae’s troupe as they prepare to take part in a Fantasia. Families, friends, team members, and men have a say, as the film takes viewers into a world of masculine ritual and carnival spirit.

22:02 DocFilm Sudan - A TV Show for Start-Ups

Youth unemployment cuts deep in Sudan. But a hit TV show has inspired young entrepreneurs. Start-ups compete in the show - and the format has done more than achieve high ratings in the struggling country. Sudan’s recent history has been shaped by conflict. The country was repeatedly in the headlines because of civil war, political unrest, and corruption. It has been a tough time for the Sudanese population, including for its younger generations, which are faced with high rates of youth unemployment. But around five years ago, a new show was broadcast called Mashrouy, which means "My Project” in Arabic. The format is that people present start-up and business ideas, and compete for funding. A panel of economic experts selects the most promising founders and supports them in building the business over a period of several months. There are similar shows in Europe and the US such as "The Apprentice." But Mashrouy aims to do more than achieve good ratings. The show wants to help combat the country’s many problems. Its popularity has come as a surprise. In fact, when the ‘Sudanese Young Businessmen Association’ (supported by the British Council) initiated the TV show in 2013, they weren’t sure it would attract any interest. Becoming an entrepreneur is not a traditional vocation in Sudan. But the show became a hit. Over 5000 company founders have since applied, and Mashrouy has come to be one of the most widely viewed television shows in Sudan.

01:15 DocFilm Vincent van Gogh Superstar

Vincent van Gogh is famous around the globe. His vibrant paintings and tragic life are objects of endless fascination. Those are facts that have led to the artist being celebrated in more places than just museums. He’s everywhere - on mugs and posters. You can read his letters on a mobile telephone app. Every aspect of his life has been examined and the hype just doesn’t stop. Vincent van Gogh lives in the imagination. He’s a myth in Europe’s cultural collective memory. What is it that makes him so alluring? Or does Van Gogh simply represent the systematic making of a legend, one that has long become devoid of factual accuracy?

Heroes are made because they are needed. This documentary recounts the "making of” a universally appealing van Gogh. It takes viewers from Auvers-sur-Oise via Paris and Holland, into the hearts of art lovers in Asia, who are among van Gogh’s greatest admirers. The filmmakers speak with leading European van Gogh experts, and contemporary artists such as Ai Weiwei. They approach van Gogh as a case study in the context of national identity and dominant precisely because van Gogh’s works are just as enthusiastically received as in the US and Europe cultures. In his letters, van Gogh wrote that he wanted to open people’s eyes and hearts and hoped that they didn’t merely look at his paintings but drew life from them as well. He may seem to have done it - but are people really seeing the genuine Vincent van Gogh?

01:15 DocFilm Tanzania Transit - The divergent lives of three passengers aboard a cross country train

A traditional Maasai tribesman is travelling across Tanzania with his grandson. Among their fellow travelers are a businesswoman and a fly-by-night evangelist. They tell of their tragedies, comedies, conflicts and dreams. Isaya and his grandson are returning home from the city, where he is part of a folklore ensemble that performs traditional Maasai dances for tourists. He finds urban life strange, preferring to follow village customs in the wilds. The other passengers begin to insult and mock him, revealing the level of discrimination against the Maasai in Tanzania. Businesswoman Rukia is also on the train, as is Peter, an evangelical preacher who will "heal" any ailment for cash. His followers hold him in awe and are ready to pay sums for his services that they actually can’t afford. This documentary takes viewers on a journey that reflects a microcosm of Tanzanian society and tells the stories of people heading into an uncertain future.

Industrial agriculture is increasingly dominating the world market. It’s forcing small farmers to quit and taking over vast swathes of land. This documentary shows how destructive the lucrative agribusiness is. Whether in the USA, Brazil, Mozambique or China, agricultural giants rule the market. Food production has become a gigantic business as climate change and population growth continue. This is having devastating consequences for small farmers and for the environment. On the banks of North Carolina’s New River, there’s a vile stench. Clean water activist Rick Dove takes a flight to show us what’s causing the smell. Scores and scores of pigs are living upriver, in so many pens the farms look more like small towns. "We have eight to ten million pigs here. And the problem is that they are kept so close together and their excrement pollutes and threatens the water and natural life on the North Carolina coastline." From above, you can see large cesspools everywhere, shimmering red-brown in the sun. Dove is giving us a bird’s-eye view of industrialized agriculture. In the late 1970s, companies in the US began to industrialize farming. Large corporations like Smithfield built entire value chains, from raising livestock to slaughter to packaging and sales. A Chinese holding company bought Smithfield a few years ago. Industrial meat production is supposed to support increased Chinese demand for meat as the country’s prosperity grows. Dan Basse is the head of a company analyses global agriculture. He says calorie demand will also increase in countries like India, Bangladesh and Nigeria in the next few years." And with it, the demand for even more inexpensive meat of the kind agribusinesses produce and market.

01:15 DocFilm Riding the Rails Across Mongolia

A trip on the Trans-Mongolian Railway is a journey across the Mongolian steppes. Along the route are impressive Central Asian cities; historic, legendary oases; and special sites in the middle of the Gobi Desert. A young Mongolian travel blogger from Ulan-Bator, Akuma, and his camera team take viewers on an exotic odyssey. The season is summer, when the setting sun seems to turn the landscape along the railway route saffron yellow. Along the way, Akuma speaks of the customs and traditions of his country. He gains access to a shaman, who shows the filmmakers the mystical world of Mongolian myth. The trip starts in the north, not far from where Genghis Kahn is believed to have been born. Another stop is perhaps the most beautiful and significant Buddhist sites in Mongolia, the remote 18th-century Amarbayasgalant Monastery. The documentary is a visual feast on wheels - an excursion through the wide, rugged, ancient world of Mongolia, where sometimes time seems to have stood still.
