A NEW PERSPECTIVE FOR THE DEMOGRAPHIC STUDY OF ROMAN SPAIN César Carreras Monfort* * Universitat Oberta de Catalunya e-mail: [email protected] In the last years, there has been an increase in the number of demographic studies of ancient societies, with the main aim to recognize the internal organization of the populations and, to some extent, how the resources of a territory determined patterns of distribution [Gallo, 1984; Parkin, 1992]. Actually, within the limits of the Roman society, these studies allowed us to revise again basic concepts such as the relationship between the urban and rural world [López Paz, 1994], or even, to discuss about the degree of urbanism that supposedly it is accepted for the Graeco-Roman world. The demographic analyses on the Roman period were recently favoured by a better knowledge now, of the urban perimeters of ancient Roman cities, and the patterns of rural distribution; thanks to the contribution of either the urban archaeology and the rural field-surveys [Barker, 1991] and cadastres studies [Chouquer and Favory, 1991]. Furthermore, the important contribution of papyrology also stands out, since they supply information on demography, which despite being basically about Roman Egypt, it can be extrapolated to other provinces [Hombert and Preaux, 1952; Bagnall and Frier, 1994]. These new documental evidences allow us to carry out a new estimate, from another viewpoint, of the population in a very particular province such as Roman Spain, and also they become a headway in the detailed study of population patterns. -

The focus will be centered on how it is used in different ways in the different kingdoms (Castile, Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia, Portugal and the Basque Provinces and Navarre) and what the authors are trying to achieve through this. Results show that while Castilian authors try to prove Spanish antiquity with the Tubal settlement, in other kingdom, especially in Catalonia, Portugal and Navarre there is a more regional use of the myth. Most of these authors try to prove that their own kingdom is the territory where Tubal settled, which would give a pre-eminence of antiquity to it in comparison to the other Iberian territories. Political Uses of History in Spain PEDRO RUIZ TORRES Politics has always been closely bound up with history, which in turn has often been used for political purposes.' History is currently playing an important political role in many different societies. Where the shaping of a national identity remains a problem or where old conflicts still linger, setting peoples or nations against one another, it occupies the centre of political debate and serves to justify a wide variety of actions and opinions. But even where there are no such problems, history is strengthening its lies with politics. Historians, or at least some of them, are beginning to become known for their repeated appearance in the media when it comes to matters of internal or international politics. A considerable number of history hooks and memoirs and publications of a popularizing nature reveal clear political motivation, not to mention the debates that they provoke. But it is undoubtedly in commemorations that the increasing politicization of history is seen most clearly. Historical commemorations sponsored hy a wide range of governments follow hard on each other's heels. In Spain, 1998 was the year of commemorations par exce/le11ce, just as 1995 had been in the countries that celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the end of World War II. Spain had not taken part in that war - although the then recently established dictatorship of Franco had shown that it favoured Nazi Germany and Mussolini's regime - and was therefore in no position to recall the defeat of fascism, but in 1998 it was faced with a very special occasion. -

DESCRIPTION Study of the history of al-Andalus, an Arab and Islamic country in Iberia during the Middle Ages, from the Muslim conquest (711) to the fall of Granada (1492). 2. PREREQUISITES History of al-Andalus is an open course, suitable for students with different academic backgrounds and profiles. Especially recommended for students of History, Religious Studies, or Arabic and Islamic Studies. 3. OBJECTIVES/LEARNING OUTCOMES The main subjects will be addressed following the different periods in which the history of al-Andalus is usually divided. These subjects range from historiographical issues (the problematic insertion of al-Andalus into the modern notion of history of Spain) to specific issues of particular significance to each period: the development of Islamization and Arabization, the establishment of the Umayyad State, the Caliphate of Córdoba, the production and transmission of knowledge, the war against the Christians, the urbanization process, the dependence of foreign Islamic powers (Almoravids and Almohads), the affirmation of an Andalusi identity, etc. 4. TEACHING METHODOLOGY Five classes of 1.5 hours (7.5 hours) will be devoted to each one of the five units. The classes are taught through Ppoint presentations aimed at supporting the class explanations, and intended to acquaint the student with historical sources through the use of images (maps, graphics, numismatics, epigraphy) and texts. -

EVOLUTION AND RECENT DEVELOPMENTS OF SPANISH ∗ WINE SECTOR, 1950-2008 MARTÍNEZ-CARRIÓN, José Miguel1 MEDINA-ALBALADEJO, Francisco José2 INTRODUCTION Since the 1980s the traditional European winegrowing regions have been carrying out deep changes in response to the onslaught of winegrowers in the New World. In recent years Spanish regions have been foremost in Europe in terms of change in areas turned over to wine production and distribution (Anderson, Norman and Wittwer, 2004). Some writers have gone so far as to talk about a “revolution in the vineyards and wines of Spain” in response to increasing international competition. The changes have been prolific since Spain’s entry into the European Economic Community in 1986. European agricultural policies supposed a huge readjustment in the geographical distribution of Spain’s vineyards and it had a significant effect on the regions in the country which were involved in the regulation of the wine market. This study analyses the main sequences of changes the Spanish wine industry has undergone: the evolution of consumption through the changes in consumer drinking habits; the leading role of exports in international markets; the spread of different types of marketing and business organization; the distribution in large and small sellers, and the main factors that have been involved in the chain of production and in the modernization of the wineries. 1. Mirow* The Spanish Constitution of Cádiz of 1812 has recently gained the attention of constitutionalists and legal historians as an essential step in the development of world constitutionalism generally and Latin American constitutionalism more specifically. This interest in the Constitution of Cádiz, or the Spanish Constitution of 1812, has increased due to its bicentennial in 2012 and by the rolling bicentennials of independence of Latin American republics. The drop in Spanish wine sales is primarily due to the closure of the hospitality and tourism sectors in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Average prices for Spanish wine are also expected to decline. The Ministry of Agriculture implemented a set of extraordinary measures to alleviate the pandemic’s negative impact on the Spanish wine sector and to avoid a surplus of wine during the upcoming season. With the end of the Spanish State of Alarm and the reopening of nonessential activities, Spanish industry observers expect the wine sector to rebound. THIS REPORT CONTAINS ASSESSMENTS OF COMMODITY AND TRADE ISSUES MADE BY USDA STAFF AND NOT NECESSARILY STATEMENTS OF OFFICIAL U.S. GOVERNMENT POLICY General information According to EU official data, in 2019/20, Spain produced 38,100 thousand hectoliters (HL) of wine including grape must, a 23 percent drop from the previous market year and 11 percent below the five- year average. The planted area to vineyards stood at around 902,000 hectares, a two percent decline from the previous period and 1.7 percent below the five-year average. Spain leads the area planted with organic vineyards in the EU with 113,412 hectares. There are about 4,300 wineries in Spain, 75 percent of which are export oriented.
