The Practices of Carnival: Community, Culture and Place
The Practices of Carnival: Community, Culture and Place. Submitted by Jonathan Freeman Croose to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Geography May 2014 This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. …………………………………………………………………….. 1 Abstract: This thesis analyses ethnographic data gathered during participant observation within two vernacular town carnivals in East Devon and Dorset during 2012 and within the professional Cartwheelin’ and Battle for the Winds street performances which were staged as part of the Maritime Mix programme of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad at Weymouth. The thesis presents qualitative perspectives with regard to the cultural performance of carnival in the fieldwork area, in order to analyse the ‘performativity’ of carnival in these contexts: how it enacts and embodies a range of instrumentalities with regard to notions of community, culture and place. The thesis serves to unpack the ‘performance efficacy’ of carnival within the wider political and cultural landscape of the UK in the early 21st century, revealing the increasing influence of institutional policy on its aesthetics and cultural performance. By way of contrast, the thesis also asserts the value of vernacular carnivalesque street performance as a contestation of hegemonic notions of ‘art’, ‘place’ and ‘culture’. -
Critical Acclaim for ‘Girl Model’ by David Redmon and A
Critical Acclaim For ‘Girl Model’ By David Redmon and A. Sabin “Documentarians David Redmon and Ashley Sabin have pieced together an eye-opening account of a form of human trafficking . [that] gets under the skin-deep promises of glamour and wealth that lure a seemingly endless stream of very young hopefuls.” —Sheri Linden, The Los Angeles Times “Dipping into a very specific corner of the modeling industry — the search for fresh Russian faces to feed the seemingly insatiable Japanese appetite for prepubescent-looking clotheshorses — [this] film presents an international transaction sustained by the twin forces of illusion and delusion.” —Jeannette Catsoulis, The New York Times “Girl Model presents an emotionally charged look at the realities of life as a young model, and the hardships that put girls to work at such a young age . .[and] leads you to consider the issues.” —Jennifer Merin, About.com Documentaries “An alarming documentary about the trafficking of Russian child models to the Japanese fashion market . when a postscript tells us what Nadya will do next, we're filled with dread.” —Ella Taylor, NPR “Far more interesting than the breathless documentaries that usually accompany Fashion Week, this eye-opening expose may actually change the way you watch the coverage. .There are no supermodels or Cinderellas in this sadly compelling story, just predators and the impoverished dreamers who want to trust them. Don’t expect to look at a catwalk in quite the same fashion again.” —Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News Stranger PersoIn pulling the curtain back only slightly, the directors dare you to try forgetting what you've seen. -
Must Not Be Slavery
The “Spirit of Saratoga” must not be slavery Response to the repulsive wall of “lawn jockeys” that both glorify slavery and erase the history of Black jockeys, currently installed at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. This is not an act of vandalism. It is a work of public art and an act of applied art criticism. This work of protest art is in solidarity with the Art Action movement and the belief that art is essential to democracy We Reject the whitewashing of Saratoga’s history. We Reject the whitewashing of our national history. This nation was founded on slavery. So was the modern sport of Thoroughbred racing. You insult us and degrade the godfathers of the sport by perpetuating, profiting from and celebrating the flagrant symbol of servitude and slavery that is now called the “lawn jockey.” Just like the confederate flag, the “lawn jockey” is a celebrated relic of the antebellum era. The evolution of the hitching post (later renamed “lawn jockey”) follows the historical national trend of racist imagery and perpetuated stereotypes about Black Americans. This iconography is not unique, and the evidence can be found in everything from postcards, napkin holders, toothpaste, key racks, cigarette lighters, tobacco jars, syrup pitchers and doorstops, to name a fraction of the products designed to maintain the ideology of slavery. The original Jockeys were born into slavery or were the sons of slaves. From its inception in the early 19th century, African-American jockeys ruled the sport of organized Thoroughbred racing for almost a century. Isaac Murphy, the greatest American jockey of all time, was the son of a former slave. -

Being that I am infatuated with the 70's and I had to take a break from all the death and dismemberment I've been reading about as of late, I bought a copy of her book, thinking it would be quick, light on-the-potty reading, full of fun gossipy tidbits about my favorite decade and all the beautiful people who were there. It also contains a scene in which Bill Cosby invites her back to his hotel room and she refuses him, a scene that she says Cosby's lawyers forced her to change. CARNIVAL’S DANCE OF DEATH: FESTIVITIY IN THE REVENGE PLAYS OF KYD, SHAKESPEARE, AND MIDDLETON by BENJAMIN ROLLINS Under the Direction of Paul Voss ABSTRACT Through four hundred years of accumulated disparaging comments from critics, revenge plays have lost much of the original luster they possessed in early modern England. Surprisingly, scholarship on revenge tragedy has invented an unfavorable lens for understanding this genre, and this lens has been relentlessly parroted for decades. The all-too-familiar generic approach that calls for revenge plays to exhibit a recurring set of concerns, including a revenge motive, a hesitation for the protagonist, and the revenger’s feigned or actual madness, imply that these plays lack philosophical depth, as the appellation of revenge tends to evoke the trite commonalities which we have created for the genre. This dissertation aims to rectify the provincial views concerning revenge tragedies by providing a more complex, multivalent critical model that makes contemporary outmoded approaches to this genre. -
