State Championships: 1923 - Defeated Smithfield in Championship game 24-23 and finished with a 23-2 record. This was basically the same group that had just won the State Football Championship in the fall of 1922. 1955 - Defeated Gastonia in 3A Championship game 61-52 and finished with a 19-3 record. Won 2 of three games versus Gastonia during the season.

1972 - Mary Montgomery, after completing her sophomore year at AHS, swam for Team USA in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany. She finished 6 th in the world in the Women’s 400 meter Individual Medley with a time of 5:09.98 (August 31, 1972).

State Championships: 1922: Asheville 12, New Bern 6 (OT) The QB was Ralph James who later became head coach at AHS. A transfer from Columbia (SC) High, James was All-State in football and basketball in both SC and NC. 2005: 3A - Asheville 13, Western Alamance 10

NCHSAA Division II Championship: 1982: 4A - Asheville 21, Greenville Rose 7 Under Coach Bruce Peterson AHS finished the regular season 9-1, with the only blemish a one-point loss to Western 4-A Conference champion Ashbrook. (Placed in the two-week 4-A Division II playoffs, AHS defeated Charlotte Independence and quarterback Mark Maye, the state’s player of the year, 50-29, with 1,000-yard rushers Scott Roberts and Pete Calhoun scoring three touchdowns each.)

Player, and Then Coach, In State Championship: Mickey Ray is the only person to play on a State Championship team (Division II, 1982) and coach on another (Assistant Coach, 2005). Ralph James played on the 1922 State Championship team and was head coach (1941-44) but never won a State Championship. However, his team was National Runner-up in 1941.

South Point went on to win the State Championship. 2011: 12-1 (10-0 regular season, lost in third round of state playoffs) 1999: 12-2 (State 3A Runner-Up)

Most Consecutive Conference Victories: 18 - 2002-2004 16 - 1989-1992

Greatest Comeback Victory: 2011: At A. C. Reynolds, September 23, 2011: Asheville trailed A.C. Reynolds 29-0, and scored for the first time with 6 seconds remaining in the first half. In less than 14 minutes, Asheville held Reynolds scoreless and went ahead by the final winning margin of 35-29.

Biggest Chokes: 2004: Asheville led Concord 20-0 at Concord High with 5:43 left in the 4th quarter of the 3A Semifinal game. Concord came back to win 21-20 led by the passing of Tommy Beecher. Concord went on to win the State Championship. 2002: Asheville led Ashbrook at home late in the 3AA semifinal game but lost 22-19 in overtime. Ashbrook went on to win the State Championship.
