OMB Approvllll No. 1024-0018 NPS Form 10-900-a (8-86) 7 1 Asheville High School Section number ___ Page ___ Buncombe County, NC Summary The 1929 Asheville High School, an imposing Art Deco!Italian Renaissance-style three-story building, was designed by the noted architect Douglas Ellington. The east-facing building is a pink granite, tile roofed, three story, steel-framed structure finished with hollow tile, concrete, and brick. Composed of a central hexagonally-shaped rotunda with two academic wings and one auditoriumJcafeteria wing radiating off this central space, the school retains a remarkable degree of its original integrity. The only major addition is a sympathetically-designed concrete slab-faced media center that was attached with a covered walkway to the rear (north) elevation of the school in 1974. The school is sited high on a natural promontory above McDowell Street which is the eastern boundary of the nominated property and a major north-south artery between downtown Asheville

DECA, FBLA, FCCLA, FFA, HOSA, Skills USA and TSA provide our students multiple opportunities to network in their field. In high school I developed and excelled in the business skills that led me to choose my career path in college and career. As our students prepare themselves for their future in education or the job market, equipping them to find their career path and to be competitive in the marketplace are two of the many benefits to belonging to a CTSO. I have seen directly how CTSOs have impacted students’ lives in multiple ways. By attending local, regional, state and national events hosted by their CTSOs, our students learn to network socially and professionally and develop leadership skills necessary to succeed in their career field and life. Our goal is for each of our students to be able to compete globally in the 21st century and find gainful employment in their field. Donnie Baxter of Asheboro, Ronnie Chavis of Pembroke, Lawrence Dunn of Raleigh, Doug Henderson of Greensboro, Lindsey Page of Burlington, Larry Rhodes of Gastonia, Robert Steele of Salisbury and Jim Taylor of Shelby have been named as the 27th group of inductees to join the prestigious hall. That brings to 148 the number enshrined. The University of North Carolina NCHSAA Hall of Famers designated the day as the 28th annual NCHSAA The newest members of the NCHSAA Hall of Fame, who will be formally inducted in Day.
