From the editor t’s unquestionable that the political landscape has gripped our lives in ways we never saw coming. And in effect, it’s caused rifts between some of those nearest and dearest to our hearts. Despite the harried world we live in, we find ourselves back at the time of year where we need to let go of what divides us and embrace what unites us – friendship and family. Coming together over the holidays is a beautiful thing where we create memories Ithat have staying power. For me, this holiday season is even more special, as it will be my daughter’s first Christmas. This issue, our great gatherings issue, is a celebration of coming together for food and fellowship – nourishment for the body, mind, and soul. in the case of the twine & twig sisters, founders and owners of the jewelry and lifestyle brand, it’s a “framily” affair with an open-door, zero-formalities policy where friends, family, and children gather on sundays, watch football, break bread, and engage with one another. You might even get blazed over by a roller-blading child or two gliding through the home (page 54). For anyone who’s ever put together a dinner party or hosted an oyster roast, they can tell you that it’s a full-on production. one way or the other, food must be made, drinks must be served, and plating must be provided. there’s a lot that’s involved. And it’s the thoughtfulness and care that go into each decision that make it such a special occasion. interior designer Barrie Benson welcomes us into one of her client’s homes and shares with us how she creates a perfect dinner party tablescape and also provides a few tips and inspired looks for the holiday season (page 20). After all, it is the season of giving, so we’ve put together a design- inspired gift guide to give you some ideas for the design enthusiast in your life.

WOP SONG: TUNE & ECHO A Stage Play with Music Written by Vian Andrews Italian translation by Claudio Ginocchietti Fourth Revision completed 10 Feb '17 Based on an original idea Copyright October 2016 Vian Andrews 4583 Neville Street Burnaby, BC V5J 3G9 778-378-7954 WOPSONG: TUNE & ECHO ACT 1 A sunny piazza in the dilapidated, dun-colored village of Calabro in the mountains of southern Italy, 2016. On the left, the main door to the village church, on the right a cafe whose sign is badly in need of repainting, with two tables with chairs. In between the church and the cafe there is a row of three drab houses. On the first house and third house a shutter or two is open, but the shutters of the center house are closed and one or two are hanging askew. A small riser stands in front of the center house. Two older men play cards at one of the cafe tables. An old woman, dressed in black, sits on the stoop of the first house, taking in the scene while absentmindedly gnashing her teeth. Suddenly the blast of a horn from an arriving bus is heard off left, making the old woman and the men jump. Father Sarducci, the town priest opens the door of the church and steps out at the same time, Gaetano, the owner of the cafe and his wife, Giuseppina, step out of the cafe to find out what is going on. The voices of three men singing Bon Jovi’s This House is Not for Sale is heard coming from the direction of the bus.

Final Report: Post World War Two Survey Sherry Joines Wyatt & Sarah Woodard for David E. Gall Architects. Click here to see National Register eligible properties UNCC students in the History 6000 Historic Preservation class spent hours examining newspapers and journals of the post-World War Two era. Without their work this report would have been impossible to produce. Click here to see the results of the students' work. In 1945, the western world was emerging from a long, dark tunnel of economic depression and world-wide war. In the United States, the light at the end of that tunnel illuminated the deficiencies and shortages left after years focused solely on survival. Thus, with the conclusion of war, the country rushed to satisfy the needs and wants of a population overwhelmed and exhilarated by returning servicemen and a newly invigorated economy. The post-war years saw common citizens experience economic prosperity not previously known. This, in turn, sparked a renewal and explosive expansion of trends begun in the wealthy 1920s. Some of the most notable and important of these patterns, with respect to the built environment, were suburban expansion, transportation improvements and accessibility, and a renewed interest in Modernist ideas about architecture. These three national trends created the three local contexts of community planning, transportation, and architecture in which Charlotte’s post-war Modernist architecture developed. An examination of these contexts and the dynamic changes in the booming, post-war New South City of Charlotte between 1945 and 1965 can serve as a case study of the historical climate in which post-war architecture evolved throughout North Carolina.
