BIOGRAPHY

Mr. Kennedy EDIAGBONYA is an erudite lecturer of Business Education in the Faculty of Education, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. He was born into the Noble family of Mr. and Mrs. Dominic Ediagbonya on 24th November, 1984. He hails from Uhen Town in Ovia-North East Local Government, Edo State. He had his primary education in Uyiosa Primary School after which he proceeded to Akenzua II Secondary School, both in Benin City. With his outstanding performance in SSCE and JAMB (UME), he proceeded for higher education in A.A.U, Ekpoma where he was offered admission in Business Education in 2004/05 academic session. He completed his degree programme in 2007/08 academic session where he bagged a second class upper division (21) which became the best in the department and second best in the faculty of education. He proceeded for the compulsory National Youth Service Corps in 2009 in Katsina State where he taught English Language in Government Technical College, Mashi. After his NYSC in 2010, he was offered an admission to pursue MEd degree in Business Education in University of Benin (UNIBEN). His outstanding performance during his MEd degree further necessitated his desire to pursue a Ph.D degree in Business Education in the same Department in 2014/15 academic session. Mr. K. Ediagbonya has won several academic prizes; and received several commendations and they include: best graduating student in Secretarial Education; best graduating student in Business Education; best graduating student in the Department of Vocational and Technical Education (VTE); best male graduating student in the Faculty of Education (2007/08) academic session. He has over twenty-seven (27) publications to his credit; and he has equally presented several conference papers in both national and international conferences. He is also a member of several professional bodies, such as Association of Business Educators of Nigeria (ABEN), Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM) and so on. He is happily married to Mrs. Irene Obasogie Ediagbonya.

Utilization of teaching aids in teaching and learning of Business Education in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma

Abstract This research work on the utilization of teaching aids in teaching and learning of Business Education in A.A.U. tested (2) hypotheses and they are: there are two adequate teaching aids in the teaching and learning of business education. There are no adequate trained business educators to utilize these teaching aids. The literature reviewed centred on business education, aspect of business education, qualification of business educators, teaching aids are in use in business education and their forms. The case study research design was adopted for this study and the one sample z-test of population proportion was used in analysing the hypotheses which were accepted. Some vital recommendations were made based on the findings of the study.

Empirical Analysis of Secondary School Students’ Perception about a good Teacher in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State

Abstract This research paper on empirical analysis of secondary school students’ perception about a good teacher in Egor Local Government Area tested three hypotheses and they are: the personal qualities of a teacher do determine a good teacher, the professional/academic qualifications of teachers do not determine a good teacher and that there is no significant difference between private and public secondary school students’ perception about a good teacher. The descriptive survey research design was adopted. The t-test was used in analyzing the data generated from the questionnaire administered to a sample of 120 students. The findings of this work are: the personal qualities of a teacher do determine a good teacher and there is no significant difference between private and public secondary school students’ perception about a good teacher. Some vital recommendations were given.

Quality Assurance of Business Education

Abstract This paper was designed to critically examine the concept of quality assurance as it relates to the field of business education. the term quality assurance was defined as the systematic, structured and continuous attention to quality in terms of quality maintenance and improvement. A conceptual framework that vividly illustrates Quality Assurance (QA) was displayed and the various categories of Quality Assurance were also looked at. The instrument used in gathering data in Quality Assurance (QA) was examined and some of the approaches often adopted in Quality Assurance were briefly examined. Some of the problems facing Quality Assurance in the field of business education were looked at and they include absence of adequate manpower, lack of proper supervision of teachers, absence of teaching or instructional technologies and others.

Entrepreneurship Education: anti-dote to the challenges of youth unemployment in Nigeria

Abstract Youth unemployment in Nigeria is indeed a great challenge to all stakeholders including “Entrepreneurship Educators’’. This paper has made an attempt to examine the concept of entrepreneurship education which is a growing phenomenon in this part of the world. The concept of entrepreneurship was equally looked at. Youths and unemployment were looked at vis a vis the challenges of youth unemployment in Nigeria. Some strategies were advocated by the authors to combat these aforementioned challenges through entrepreneurship education. some of the recommendations advanced are: the implementation of the entrepreneurship programme in secondary schools and tertiary institutions should be strengthened by all. The government should create accessible fund for prospective youth entrepreneurs.

Re-Inforcing Technical and Vocational Education in The 9-3-4 Educational Programme in Nigeria

Abstract This paper which was geared at re-inforcing TVE in the 9-3-4 educational programme in Nigeria reviewed some literature on the concept of Technical and vocational education with particular attention on the goals of technical and vocational education. The historical background of the 6-3-3-4 system was examined with reference on 6 year career awareness, 3 year career exploration, 3 year career preparation and 3-year career specialization. The challenges of the system was briefly examined. The 9-3-4 educational programme was looked at as a strategy to correct the abnormalities with the 6-3-3-4 system. The place of TVE in this programme was our great concern. The curriculum breakdown was illustrated also. The paper equally examined the way forward to TVE vis-à-vis 9-3-4 educational programme. Among the recommendations made is that government should make more fund available and more trained TVE experts.

Employability of Business Education Graduates

Abstract This paper investigated the concept of employability of Business Education graduates. Human Capital Theory which was popularized by Schultz formed the theoretical framework for this study. The main purpose of this work was to ascertain the mean ratings of employability skills possessed by Business Education graduates. Four research questions were raised to guide the study and three hypotheses were formulated. The case study research design was adopted for this study. The systematic random sampling technique was used in selecting 60 respondents from the population of 130. The questionnaire titled ‘Employability of Business Education Graduates Questionnaire (EBEGQ)’ was used in eliciting information from the students. The researcher together with a research assistant administered the instrument. The Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS), Mean, Standard Deviation, t-test analysis and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used in analyzing the data. One of the findings is that Business Education graduates employability skills is high. A major recommendation made was that shorthand and typing teachers should be encouraged to be more active in imparting these skills.

Roles of Mentoring in Enhancing Productivity of Business Education Teachers in Nigeria

Abstract This paper specifically examined the roles of mentoring in enhancing the productivity of business education teachers in Nigeria. The paper examined the concept of Business education in relation to mentoring. The theoretical framework of this study is the social constructivist learning theory as popularized by Vygotsky. The concept of mentoring was examined in detail with particular attention to its origin and types. The authors described mentoring as a symbiotic relationship between two individuals in the same discipline with similar ideologies where the more experienced one is saddled with the responsibility of training the less experienced one and in the process updating and renewing his/her Knowledge, Attitude and Skills (KAS) towards greater productivity. The types of mentoring examined in this study include traditional one-to-one, group, peer, team and e-mentoring. The roles of mentoring in improving the productivity of business educators were looked at and one of the recommendations advanced by the authors was that the goals and objectives behind any mentoring programme should be explicitly stated in order to ensure proper accomplishment.

The Roles of Entrepreneurship Education in Ensuring Economic Empowerment and Development

Abstract This research paper is specifically prepared to examine the roles of Entrepreneurship Education in ensuring Economic empowerment and Development. The conceptual framework developed by Shapero and Sokol in 1982 was used in illustrating the series of stages and processes that eventually give birth to the formation of a business venture; and three (3) stages were identified in the model. The concept of Entrepreneurship education was briefly examined in relation to Economic Development. Economic Development was described as the quantitative and qualitative changes in the economy. The author briefly examined the concept of Entrepreneurship Education including its goals and objectives. A section was devoted to examining the roles of Entrepreneurship Education in ensuring economic empowerment and development in Nigeria. One of the major recommendations advanced in this paper was that Government should make accessible loans available for graduates of the programme so as to start up their businesses.

ASSESSMENT OF BUSINESS EDUCATION STUDENTS’ ENROLMENT TREND IN AMBROSE ALLI UNIVERSITY, EKPOMA, EDO STATE

Abstract: This paper investigated the assessment of business education students’ enrolment trend in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State. The main purpose of this study was to assess the enrolment trend of Business Education students in A.A.U from 2007/2008 to 2011/2012 academic session. Five research questions were raised to guide the study and three hypotheses were formulated. The case study research design was adopted for this study. The simple random sampling technique was used in drawing up 100 respondents from the population. The questionnaire titled ‘Assessment of Business Education Students’ Enrolment Trend Questionnaire (ABESETQ)’ was used in eliciting information from the students. The instrument was validated by experts and the test-retest method of reliability was adopted in obtaining a coefficient of 0.81. The researchers together with a research assistant administered the instrument. The Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS), Mean, Standard Deviation and t-test statistics were used in analyzing the data. One of the findings is that there is a significant difference between the perceptions of male and female Business Education students as regards factors affecting enrolment trend in A.A.U. A major recommendation made was that there should be conscious government policies aimed at reinforcing and revamping Business education.

Abstract: This paper is specifically prepared to examine the concept of stress management as an approach to ensuring high academic performance of Business Education students. A conceptual framework was developed be the authors in illustrating the inter-relationship that exist among the associated variables on stress. A brief history of the concept of stress was examined and the concept of stress was defined as the biological responses to events that threaten to overwhelm the individual capacity to cope satisfactorily in the environment; and the causes of stress(stressors) was equally examined. The various kinds of stress discussed in this paper includes: Eustress, distress, anticipatory, traumatic, acute, chronic, time, encounter and situational stress. The implication of stress on the academic performance was also of interest to us in this paper. Stress management was looked at and the common strategies of possibly managing stress were examined and they include: avoid the stressor, alter the stressor, adapt to the stressor and accept the stressor. The researchers equally advanced some recommendations among which are: Business Education students should learn to set up SMART goals and they should execute task based on their mental and physical capacities and abilities.

Entrepreneurial Studies was seen as a timely intervention in our educational sector and as such it was introduced in 2006 in our tertiary institution in order to reduce the level of unemployment in the country. A conceptual framework was developed by the authors to illustrate QA in Entrepreneurial Studies. Three (3) research questions were raised to guide the study and two (2) corresponding hypotheses were formulated. The case study research design was adopted in the study. A sample of one hundred (100) students offering Entrepreneurial Studies (year two) from the five schools in the college were used for the study. The multi-stage sampling technique was adopted in drawing up the sample. Questionnaire was used in eliciting information from the respondents and it was titled “Quality Assurance in Entrepreneurial Studies’ Questionnaire (QUASESQ)”. It was designed in a 4-point rating and it was in two (2) sections. Section A was on the demographic variables while Section B contained ten (10) opinion statements. The instrument was validated by experts and the test re-test method of reliability was used in obtaining a coefficient of 0.82. The data collated was analyzed using Mean, Standard Deviation, t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). One of the findings is that there is a significant difference between the perceptions of male and female students as regards factors affecting QA in Entrepreneurial Studies in College of Education, Ekiadolor. A major recommendation advanced was that there should be proper and regular accreditation exercise void of sharp practices.

Abstract This paper is aimed at examining the role of Entrepreneurship Education in promoting Peace and Economic Development. The concept of Peace was briefly examined in relation to Economic Development. Economic Development was described as the quantitative and qualitative changes in the economy. The conceptual framework developed by Shapero and Sokol in 1982 was used in illustrating the series of stages and processes that ventually give birth to the formation of a business venture and three (3) stages were identified in the model. The authors briefly examined the concept of Entrepreneurship Education including its goals and objectives. A section was devoted to examining the roles of Entrepreneurship Education in promoting Peace and National Development in Nigeria. One of the major recommendations advanced in this paper was that there should be massive enlightenment on the evils and setbacks that results from a violent and chaos economy.

Abstract This research paper has specifically x-rayed the concept of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) and it was defined as a business which is owned, led by one or a few persons, with direct owner(s) influence in decision making, and having a relatively small share of the market and relatively low capital requirement. The contributions of SMEs to the economy were examined in this paper. The problems confronting SMEs and the possible strategies of combating the problems were also examined. A conceptual framework was developed by the authors and it explains/illustrates the series of variables that are integral in the area of SMEs and the effects it can possibly have on the economy. The concept of Economic Development was briefly described. A section was devoted to examining the roles of SMEs for economic Development in Nigeria. One of the major recommendations advanced in this paper was that the Government should urgently invest massively in improving the current infrastructural base in the country.

The instrument used was the questionnaire titled: Business Education Students’ Perceptions of Entrepreneurship Education Questionnaire (BESPEEQ) and it was divided into two sections – A and B. Section A consist of the demographic information of the respondents while section B consist of thirteen (13) opinion statements structured in a 4-point rating scale. The instrument was validated by three (3) experts and the test re-test method of reliability was used in obtaining reliability co-efficient of 0.78. The instrument was administered to the respondents with the help of research assistants and the data collated was subjected to statistical analyses. The descriptive and inferential statistical tools were used in analyzing the data. The findings revealed that entrepreneurial have relevance in entrepreneurship. It also revealed that skills and entrepreneurship education have influence on economic development; and that there was no significant difference between the perceptions of male and female business education students on the relevance of entrepreneurship Education. One of the recommendations advanced by the researchers was that there should be conscious efforts by educators to properly transmit the entrepreneurial skills to the learners with ease.

Abstract This research paper was designed to examine the roles of mentorship in the training of Business Education teachers in Nigeria. The concept of mentorship was examined with specific references to other scholarly works in the area. The authors developed a conceptual framework to properly illustrate what mentorship is all about. The framework examined some variables and the two main actors in mentorship were examined. The model equally emphasized the various mentoring strategies which include: traditional one-to-one, team, group, peer and e-mentoring. The roles of an effective mentor were also examined and a table was used in illustrating these roles. Some of the roles examined in the table include adviser, guidance, teacher, coach, role and counsellor. A section was devoted to examining the types of mentoring and the roles of mentorship in the training of Business Education teachers. One of the recommendations advanced by the authors was that proper recruitment test should be conducted in selecting new Business Educators so as to be able to ascertain their strengths and weaknesses; and design a mentoring programme to meet their training needs.

Abstract This paper has examined the place of Entrepreneurship Education in accelerating Agri- business activities in Nigeria. The paper explained what Entrepreneurship Education is all about including its goals. A conceptual framework developed by Garba in 2010 was adapted and it was used in illustrating the series of stages/processes that eventually climax in business start-up (Agri-business). The concept of Agri-business and Agri-business activities were examined in detail with examples and instances. The three major components in Agri- business, namely, the production and distribution of farm inputs, the actual production and then the processing and distribution of farm produce were examined including the objectives of Agri-business. The roles of Entrepreneurship Education in accelerating Agri-businesses were examined and the paper therefore recommended that the government should make incentives available to Agri-business managers/farmers.

The instrument used was the structured questionnaire and it was validated by experts in the field. The test re-test method of reliability was used in ascertaining the reliability of the instrument and it yielded a co-efficient of 0.87. The mean and standard deviation were used in analyzing the data collated and some of the findings include: SIWES has great benefit especially in equipping Business education students with skills and that funding is a major challenge confronting SIWES. One of the major recommendations advanced in this paper was that there should be more funding of the scheme by the government in order for it to be more effective.

Abstract This research paper specifically investigated the influence of teaching methods on the implementation of the curriculum content of secretarial education in selected colleges of education in south-south, Nigeria. One research question and a corresponding hypothesis was formulated to be tested. The survey research design was adopted for this study. The population of the study comprised 74 secretarial education teachers and they were used as the sample for the study. The instrument used was the structured questionnaire and it was validated by experts in the field. The test re-test method of reliability was used in ascertaining the reliability of the instrument and it yielded a co-efficient of 0.82. The mean, standard deviation and t-test were used in analyzing the data collated and some of the findings include: teachers sometimes use the prescribed teaching methods. One of the major recommendations advanced in this paper was that secretarial education teachers need a retraining in the use of all teaching methods.

The instrument used was the structured questionnaire and it was validated by experts. The test re-test method of reliability was used in ascertaining the reliability of the instrument and it yielded a co-efficient of 0.87. The mean and standard deviation were used in analyzing the data collated and some of the findings include: bill board, cinema and print media influence the purchasing habit of Business Education students. One of the major recommendations advanced in this paper was that Bill boards should be strategically positioned in order to influence students purchasing habit.

Abstract The study investigated business education students’ perceptions of the extent of utilization of M-learning in the teaching and learning of business education in Edo State. Two research questions were raised to guide the study with one corresponding hypothesis formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The descriptive survey research design was adopted in the study. A sample of one hundred and eleven (111) business education students was randomly selected from the population of three hundred and seventy (370) final year (400 level) students in University of Benin and Ambrose Alli University, Edo State. The structured questionnaire titled: Utilization of M-learning in Business Education Questionnaire (UMIBEQ) was developed by the researcher and was structured in a 4-point likert scale, showing Very High Extent (4), High Extent (3), Low Extent (2) and Very Low Extent (1).The instrument was validated by experts in the field and the crombach alpha was used in obtaining a reliability coefficient of 0.74. The data that was collated was subjected to further statistical analysis using Mean, Standard Deviation and the Independent Sample t-test. The Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16.0 was used for this purpose. The findings revealed that business education students’ utilization of M-learning is high. It also revealed that UTME and DIRECT entry business education students do not significantly differ in their perceptions of M-learning utilization. One of the recommendations advanced was that business education students should be encouraged to utilise their mobile devices in productive ways.

The Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16.0 was used for this purpose. The findings revealed that business education students’ utilization of M-learning is high. It also revealed that male and female business education students from both UNIBEN and AAU do not significantly differ in their perceptions. Based on the foregoing findings, it is therefore recommended that business education students should be encouraged to use their mobile devices in accessing information from the internet.
