THE FIRST DIGITAL WORLD FAIR FOR AND OTHER ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

The health crisis which we are going through has weakened the wine sector; but the last set of figures published by Agence Bio last July bring signs of hope. Consumption of organic produce, and notably of organic wine, continues to grow. This crisis is having an impact on consumer awareness with a marked shift towards a preference for ethical and sus- tainable, local, and organic produce. Production is also in full growth: the region of Occitanie alone gathered over 2,500 organic-certified produ- cers, representing a total of 23,500 hectares, in 2019 - to which a further 4,000 hectares were added in 2020 (according to Agence Bio’s 2020 figures).

As the world’s number one marketplace for organic wine, Millésime Bio had to take place, at its usual dates, come what may. And the participation of 150 new exhibitors or new orga- nic producers never before seen at the show validates this dynamic. This is because Sudvinbio, before being an event organiser, is primarily a winemaker association at the heart of the trade and its concerns. It managed to be reactive and quickly respond to the needs of the sector by adapting to market logics and the diary. Guided by our wine producer identity, the fair is therefore reinventing itself for this very particular 28th edition, in order to remain now and always at the service of the producers and buyers of organic wine.

Digital innovation had already started for Millésime Bio 2020 with the introduction of new digital services to facilitate meetings, badge scanning, etc. Thanks to these tools and the flexibility they bring us, Millésime Bio 2021 – 100% DIGITAL, will allow its 1,000 exhibitors to continue to look after their blends and bottling over the three days but to also focus on exports to far away international markets as the constraints of physical travels are lifted. In that way, the show reduces significantly its carbon footprint. Millésime Bio is reinventing itself by taking the opportunity to innovate and develop. It is the same for many operators who had to find new promotional and distribution models. This theme, which is extremely topical, will be explored in our programme of online conferences.

I would like to thank the region of Occitanie and FEADER for their financial support of these innovations and of the fair communication, which contribute to make Millésime Bio the unmissable event for the .

Jeanne Fabre Oenotourism Director at Famille Fabre President of the Millésime Bio commission. THE REGION OF OCCITANIE PUTS THE DEVELOPMENT OF ORGANIC AT THE HEART OF ITS ACTION

As the leading French region for organic viticulture, and the largest vineyard for AOC wines in the world, our wines and vineyards are part of our identity and a source of pride for our region.

I want to express my sincere thanks to the Sudvinbio teams for the organisation of a 100% digital fair for 2021, which is allowing the event to be maintained despite the current context. The region wanted to once again renew its support for the organisation of Millésime Bio, an unmissable event for the wine world and our .

The health crisis which we are going through has weakened the whole of the regional viticultural industry, already heavily impacted by the Trump taxes. The region quickly mobilised to support all of the profes- sionals and offer solutions suited to their needs.

As early as May last year, we launched an unprecedented recovery plan, developed together with the trade associations. This plan is backed by a €7m cash investment and a financial stimulus package of €14m. Thanks to this plan, we support companies with business recovery and finance actions that add value to the wines from the Occitanie region. In parallel, we continue to defend the « Produit en Occitanie » (Made in Occitanie) label through our development of the « Sud de » brand – a promotional axis which benefits our producers in the wine and sectors.

The Occitanie region, the number one organic region in France, strongly supports professionals with their conversion to organic production thanks to structures set up to help maintain organic agriculture. ( )To strengthen our action, and accelerate the development of , we have adop- ted a food plan (Plan Alimentaire) as part of the wider green contract (Pacte Vert), which we have just launched. In 2021, we will remain mobilised to defend the know-how and the wines of Occitanie!

2021 PROGRAMME - 7 WHAT IS AN ORGANIC WINE?

ORGANIC AGRICULTURE EUROPEAN REGULATIONS

Organic agriculture is subjected to regulations at European level since 1991. The text which is currently in application, EC regulation 834/2007 titled ‘principles of organic production and labelling’, formulates the set of rules to follow for the production, transformation (including vinification since 2012), distribution, im- port, control, certification and labelling of organic products. It is complemented by EC regulation 889/2008, ‘Application rules for organic production’. This regulation has been the focus of a re-evaluation in 2014 in order to favour the growth of organic and to reinforce the trust of consumers in the category. The new regulations (EU) 2018/848 from May 30th 2018 will come into force on January 1st 2022.

Organic agriculture is an agricultural management and food production system which combines the best environmental practices, a high degree of diversity, the preservation of natural re- sources, the application of high standards of animal welfare and a method of production relying on natural processes and substances (sub-section 1 of EC regulation 834/2007). In France, the INAO (National Institute for Origin and Quality) is in charge of the applica- tion of organic regulations.

CONVERSION TO ORGANIC VITICULTURE In viticulture a three-year conversion period is compulsory before being able to claim an organic label. During conversion, all organic production and transformation rules must be respected. The diagram below summarises the steps towards organic conversion.

From the second year of the conversion process, it is possible to present wines made ‘in conversion to organic agriculture’ provided that only one agricultural ingredient is used in the vinification process (, alcohol, RMC are therefore forbidden).

ORGANIC CERTIFICATION - 11 ORGANIC VITICULTURE IN FRANCE A VERY POSITIVE DYNAMIC

New figures for organic wine in France confirm that the sector is booming. Between 2012 and 2019, planted surfaces and sales have more than doubled. The industry has seen its turnover exceed 1.2 billion euros, pulled by a particularly dynamic offer which grows following the pace of conversion as well as an increasingly steady demand on the French as well as the export market. Sources for all data quoted on pages 12 to 14 (unless stated otherwise): Agence Bio/ AND-International – 2019 data, last updated 2020.

PRODUCTION KEY 2019 FIGURES

In the positive context of the progress of French organic agriculture across all sectors with 2.3 million hectares cultivated organically (8.5% of France’s total cultivated area), the wine sector is doing very well. The total cultivated area for organic vineyards has risen by 23% in com- parison to 2018, reaching 112 000 hectares managed organically (certified and in conversion) in 2019, spread across 8,039 estates (+20% vs 2018). In total, at the end of 2019, surfaces certified organic and in conversation epresentedr more than 14% of the national vineyard.

Results for 2019 are very positive. A strong rise in vineyard conversion is to be noted: in 2019 1313 new estates made the move to organic against 891 in 2018, 572 in 2017 and 87 in 2016. Vineyard conversions to organic agriculture see a large increase with a 50% rise for surfaces in their first year of conversion, to 20,963 hectares.

THE VINEYARDS WHO ARE THE FRONT RUNNERS Four vineyards represent 72% of the volumes reaching the market (Languedoc-Roussillon, Rhône, Bordeaux, Provence). The average yield is higher in comparison to the previous year (+4hl per hectare) and planted areas have increased by 4,700 hectares, thanks to new conversions and new plantings coming into production.

The region of Occitanie represents 38% of French organic vineyards, a total of 42, 424 hectares (certified organic + conversion) and around 1 million hectolitres of organic wine produced in 2019 – which made it the leading French region for the production of organic wine across all sectors. Given the large growth of the areas in conversion and with a hypothetical average regional yield of 40hl/ha, expected production for the region of Occitanie would be at 1.15 million hectolitres in 2021 and 1.4 million hectolitres in 2022.

ORGANIC VITICULTURE IN FRANCE I A VERY POSITIVE DYNAMIC - 13 THE ORGANIC WINE MARKET

A MARKET IN STRUCTURAL GROWTH Pulled up by a growth in demand which tends to exceed the increase in production capability, France’s domestic organic wine market shows a yearly average growth rate of 16% in value over the 2012-2019 period.

DIVERSIFIED DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS The value of organic wine purchases by French households has been estimated at 979 million euros in 2019, an increase of 5% on 2018. Organic wine represents 4.7% of wine consumption in France (in volume, according to 2018 OIV data on consumption in France). It represents 6.7% of the volumes exported from France and 4.8% in value.

46% of organic wine sales were made from direct sales and 10% from organic specialist stores. The next channels in order of importance are and wine shops (each 22% of total value). The wine sector is the only one for which direct sales is the key commercial channel.

CHALLENGE MILLESIME BIO COMPETITION I THE SHOWCASE OF EXCELLENCE - 15 OTHER ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

FOR THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR, MILLESIME BIO WELCOMES OTHER ORGANIC ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES. The Millésime Bio fair has been the leading international trade exhibition for organic wines for 28 years. In order to create a synergy between the different segments of organic alcoholic beverages, which have experienced a rise in sales of 24% in 2019 (Agence Bio), the fair will feature for the third year running a space dedicated to other organic alcoholic beverages.

Organic alcoholic beverages meet consumer demand for sustainable agricultural practices respectful of the soil and of the biodiversity (use of organic malt, barley, fruits and herbs).

This area will gather around fifteen exhibitors who will offer cider, gin, rhum, whisky, cognac, vodka, liqueurs and other spirits. With the strong comeback of the liqueurs of yesteryear, forgotten aperitifs and the trend for craft spirits and cocktails, we are certain that this dedicated space will prove popular for the next editions of Millésime Bio.
