Resilient Resistance: Understanding the Construction of Positive Ethnocultural Identity in Visible Minority Youth by Elizabeth Shen A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration and Leadership Department of Educational Policy Studies University of Alberta © Elizabeth Shen, 2018 ii Abstract Visible minority youth face racism daily at micro, mezzo and macro-levels and yet there is a gap in academic research that examines how these students can combat racism, as they experience it at the micro-level, in order to develop pride toward their minority culture and race. As such, this dissertation explores how visible minority youth, who are living within a dominant culture environment where all levels of racism exist to encourage their assimilation, are able to express positive ethnocultural identity. In doing so, this dissertation seeks to answer the question of: How do visible minority youth build positive personal ethnocultural identity? with the corresponding question of: How do visible minority students externally express ethnocultural identity? Using case study methodology within two schools in the province of Alberta, visible minority adolescent students were interviewed and data were analyzed to gain insight into the various strategies that junior high school (grades 7, 8 and 9) students use to express their ethnocultural identity. ERIS web journal, 1/2012 The family models held by social workers and family policy programmes: critical remarks on gender and class perspectives Prof. Dr. Barbara Thiessen University of Applied Science Landshut, Faculty Social Work Abstract Supporting families is one of the main tasks of social work. Financial support, health or psychological assistance: social workers have to deal with families. But what are families? Which models do social workers employ when they think of a “normal family”, what do they expect of mothers and fathers? What is in their eyes “successful” parenting? On the other hand, how does the family experience itself as a client? Are there discrepancies between their own understanding of the notion family and what they think social workers expect of their family life? Empirical studies on the family model ideas held by social workers and their clients illustrate differences, e.g. the different parenting models of “natural growth” vs. “concerted cultivation” (Lareau 2003). They also show us how gender and class perspectives are integrated in the different family models. Furthermore, empirical reconstructions of the different family models held by clients and social workers show growing feelings of uncertainty among clients about their way of living family. This constrains contact and evokes shame. The article intends to open the discussion on family models and their embedded gender and class constructions. The ability to reflect on thinking of a “normal family” should be part of the professional toolkit of social workers. Juneau Town/East Town

Clybourn St; E-E-Lincoln Memorial Dr;W -Milwaukee River DOWNTOWN NEIGHBORHOOD DESCRIPTION East Town (also known as Juneau Town) is a densely populated neighborhood with a variety of housing styles. There are many 19th century houses in the Tudor, Queen Anne and Italianate styles integrated with multi-unit apartment buildings and newer condos. The neighborhood has some wide boulevards with green space in the medians. The streets generally follow a grid pattern; the exceptions to this are Water Street and Prospect Avenue. Water Street tracks the bend of the river and Prospect Avenue follows the curve of the bluff over Lake Michigan along Juneau Park. The topography is flat except for a hill that slopes down to the river beginning around Jefferson Street. Most of Juneau Park is in East Town. There are two monuments in Juneau Park--one is a statue of Solomon Juneau and the other of Leif Erikson. Cathedral Square is a small park in the center of the neighborhood and hosts numerous events throughout the year (see outings section and neighborhood photos below). HISTORY East Town owes its origins to Solomon Juneau. In the 1830s Juneau platted the village of Milwaukee and settled there. He began selling plots of land in what was becoming known as Juneau Town. He set the location for downtown when he and his wife Josette opened a trading post at today’s Water Street and Wisconsin Avenue. Juneau went on to become the first mayor of Milwaukee in 1846 and the city’s first postmaster. -

Meanwhile, regional conditions, such as the development of suburban immigrant gateway communities and increases in the cost of business ownership, complicate local economic development efforts in urban ethnic districts. This research is presented as a mixed–methods case study of Devon Avenue in Chicago, IL, home to a significant concentration of South Asian–owned immigrant businesses. Challenges and pressures facing businesses are examined through merchant surveys and interviews. Observations reinforce the notion that cultural competency and strong grassroots leadership is vital for economic development planning so that “capitalizing” on an ethnic heritage does not become a tool for commodification or commercial gentrification. Agencies must also be mindful of the impacts associated with suburbanization of immigrant communities and take a long-term, regional approach to planning in ethnic commercial corridors. Downey, Adviser Approved By: Dr. Liana Sayer ________________________ Adviser Dr. Zhenchao Qian Graduate Department of Sociology ABSTRACT Changes in how Americans view the role of children have prompted an increase in the deliberate cultivation of children's skills through intensive and structured parenting. With children participating in more structured activities as a result of this shift in childrearing philosophies, there are many reasons to question the benefits of these increasingly "hurried schedules." Surprisingly, however, scholars have ignored possible negative ramifications by assuming that structured activities have a simple, linear relationship with children's well-being. With more detailed modeling, I test whether the functional form of the relationship is linear, threshold, or curvilinear by analyzing a sample of 17,527 elementary-age children from The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study--Kindergarten Class of 1998-99. Findings primarily reveal a threshold relationship. For example, participation in two (versus none or one) structured activities per month was associated with greater well-being among children, but further levels of participation in structured activities resulted in no additional benefit. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First and foremost I would like to thank my advisor, Dr. Douglas Downey whose insightful comments delivered at rapid speed was invaluable to my work.
