Northern India 2020, Marc Tessier: 2 weeks & 23 species including Tiger, Striped Hyaena, Ganges River Dolphin, Himalayan Serow, Goral, Hog Deer. 19th February to 9th March – 2020 This trip was based upon Scott Flamand report (2018), Mammal Watching ®. I used public transportation (train, bus). For small distances, I used rickshaws and taxis. Trains and buses were booked in advance from https://www.irctc.co.in/nget/train-search and https://www.redbus.in/. Most of the safaris were booked 2 months before the trip but it can be difficult to get the tickets from the web sites. It could be better to book with the hotels. Weekend in Ranthambore and Corbett NP are crowded at this season. Total budget: around 1100 € (Flight included). D1 - Wednesday 19th: Flight Toulouse (France) -> Delhi (Arrival at 2 AM). D2 - Thursday 20th: Train Delhi -> Ranthambore NP. Hotel Paridhi Niwas near the Ranthambore Safari Booking Office. Indian Crested Porcupine, Nilgai, Sambar and Indian Hare in the bush and in the degraded forests close by the hotel. Nilgai, Palm Squirrels D3 - Friday 21th: Safari Ranthambore, Zone 3 (morning and evening), booked from https://sso.rajasthan.gov.in/signin 2 months before the trip. You can choose your zone and the vehicle : “Gipsy” local name for jeep or “Canter”, local name for bus ; give the priority to the zone! Zone 3 is probably the best zone for tiger and wildlife because you have more open habitats and lakes. I saw Tiger (1 female in the morning and at the same in the evening), Ruddy Mangoose (2), Spotted Deer (+++), Sambar Deer (+++), Wild Boar (++), Rhesus Macaque (++) , Northern Plains Langur (+++) , Five- striped Palm Squirrel (+) Nilgai (+). Tiger, Ruddy Mangoose D4 - Saturday 22th: Safari Ranthambore, Zone 1 on the morning: 1 Sloth Bear but no tiger. The vegetation is dense, good for birds but less for mammals. Zone 2, close to zone 3. Good diversity of wildlife but no tiger sight. Sloth Bear foraging, Northern Plains Langurs D5 - Sunday 23th: Safari Ranthambore, Zone 9. Long drive to get there (1 h) but a nice place with a river (many birds) and less jeeps and buses! We tracked a male Tiger but no sight. D6 - Monday 24th: Ranthambore-> Bharatpur by train. Visit of Keoladeo NP in the afternoon. Hotel : Falcon Guest House (A good adress!) D7 - Tuesday 25th and D8 - Wednesday 26th: Visit of Keoladeo NP. Grey Mangoose (3), Spotted Deer (+++), Sambar Deer (+), Wild Boar (++), Rhesus Macaque (++), Northern Plains Langur (+), Five-striped Palm Squirrel (++) Nilgai (++), Jakal (++), Flying fox (++). Bats going from the city to the park in the evening. Grey Mangoose, Jakals D9 - Thursday 27th: Train Bharaptur -> Dhaulpur. Not a place to stay for a long time but good connections by train. Boat ramp on the Madhya Pradesh side of the river to visit the Chambal sanctuary. I did a 2 hours trips in the afternoon (probably too early): Ganges River Doplhin (On female, a teen and a baby), Striped Hyaena (1), Jakal (2), Rhesus Macaque, Nilgai. Many birds, Gharials, Mugger crocodile. A morning boat trip is probably better! Striped Hyaena, Gharial and Muggar Crocodile D10 - Friday 28th: Train Dhaulpur -> Delhi. and night bus (sleeper) Delhi -> Nainital and Taxi Nainital -> Pangot. D11-13 - Saturday 29th to Monday 2th of March: Pangot (Or Pangoot). Few trails go in the forest from this village. Rhesus Macaque (++), Nepal Gray Langur (++), Indian Muntjac (++), Sambar (rare or hard to see). Gorals are in the rocky places of the forest or near Naini Peak. One Himalayan Serow seen near the trail which goes down and north from Pangot village to green valley birding lodge. Nepal Gray Langur, Gorals D14 - Tuesday 3th: Taxi Pangot-> Nainital. Afternoon around Hanuman Garhi Temple, south-west of Nainital: Rhesus Macaque (+), Nepal Gray Langur (+), few Gorals in the rocky places.
