history of the atlantic forest 13 chapter 1 Plant Opulence, Insatiable Greed and the Enthronement of Entropy: A View of the Socio-Environmental History of the Atlantic Rainforest Clóvis Cavalcanti1 his Chapter offers an overview of the social and envi- ronmental history of the destruction of the Atlantic forest, highlighting some striking characteristics while also addressing the economic aspects of this problem. But just which Atlantic forest is this? The geograph- ical area covered by the ecosystem described here Tbasically consists of its Northeast section, located north of the Rio São Francisco river (11º South at its mouth). In fact, the original Atlantic forest stretching south of this river was already thinning in Sergipe State by 1500, expanding and filling out substantially towards Southern Bahia State (Dean, 2004). The segment of this forest north of the São Francisco river is where much of Brazil’s sugar boom flourished during a period that played Opposite page: a decisive role in forming the nation. On this aspect, Freyre (1985) In the past, the exuberance of the fauna recalls that: “The first great blossoming of Brazilian civilization – and flora of the São Francisco River based on sugar – was specific to the Northeast, meaning agrarian charmed travelers and naturalists. Brazil, which stretched from the Recôncavo area of Bahia State to Carl Friedrich Phillip von Martius (atr.) Its four chapters present representative case studies encompassing a range of media, including prints and paintings, and artistic genres, such as still life, portraiture, landscape, and allegory, from the mid- through the late- seventeenth century. These episodes of exotic gift exchange and their manifestation in art belonged to public and private spheres, the gifting of men and women, and multiple classes of society. In analyzing these images, my methodology draws on close readings; socioeconomic, historical, pictorial, and cultural contexts; gender; and issues in gift theory, including reciprocity, identity, personalization, and commodity/gift status, to explore the pictures’ meanings or functions for their audiences.

  • A Originalidade De Um Copista Nato: a Coleção Do Instituto Ricardo Brennand Como Prática De Reprodução
ABSTRACT The private art collections in their procedure of gathering together and presenting works of art based on criteria other than those normalized in History of Art (through museums), give the possibility to experience the objects in a different way and provokes an opening to different questions. This is the case of the private collection of Ricardo Brennand Institute, in the city of Recife. Even though it’s a museum, the collection at the Institute is managed by it’s owner. This essay intends to discus some of the sets in this art collection in a perspective assumed by it’s own collector, who entitles himself as a “copista” (owner of copies).

I was, however, fortunate to have chosen a field in which one is surrounded by people with whom one can start dialogues. I cannot express my gratitude to these figures from the past, but I can to all those who have accompanied me in this adventure in the present. First of all, my sincere thanks goes to my supervisor, Jürgen Pieters, with whom the subject of this research was first outlined. Not only did he believe, against all odds, that I would find my way through, along the years he also continued to give me the necessary advice, insight, support and encouragement. Moreover, he was the one who taught me to properly ‘speak with the dead’. I also wish to express my gratitude to all the colleagues at the Faculty of Letters of Ghent University with whom I shared a workplace, had conversations or became friends. I will not mention them, the list would be too long and I am too afraid to forget someone.
