The History of the Book is booming these days, as Cyndia Susan Clegg justly observes in a recent review essay: “History of the Book: An Undisciplined Discipline” (RQ 54 [2001] 221–45). Jones’s useful book would fit nicely on the shelf with those reviewed by Clegg — probably next to Brian Richardson’s somewhat meatier and more detailed Printing, Writers and Readers in Renaissance Italy (Cambridge, 1999). While Richardson surveys Italian printing through a wide lens that takes in its technology, finances, and audience, as well as its total production through the sixteenth century, Jones focuses on the Latin and Greek texts printed from 1465 to 1500, which constitute only about 6% of the books of the incunable period (9). -

Twentieth Century Commentaries 324 Bibliography IV: Commentaries 328 274 | AULUS GELLIUS Fortuna With the exception of one problematic passage in Fronto, to be discussed below, our knowledge of Aulus Gellius’ life comes entirely from his only known work, a learned miscellany in twenty books covering matters of language, litera- ture, history, law, and much else, presented sometimes in straightforward exposi- tion, sometimes in reports of discourses and debates, and full of quotations from earlier authors whose works in many cases have not survived; the entire collec- tion is preceded by a preface and a summary of contents, chapter by chapter. Produced in an age when the authors who wrote before Cicero were preferred to those who wrote after him (Sallust is an exception, and for Gellius, though not for Fronto, Vergil), it is written in a style that, without consistently imitating the pre-classical authors, often exhibits words and phrases taken from them, many of which Gellius himself discusses in other chapters. The work is calledNoctes Atticae, “quoniam longinquis per hiemem noc- tibus in agro, sicuti dixi, terrae Atticae commentationes hasce ludere ac facere exorsi sumus” (Praefatio 4; “sicuti dixi” refers back to the lost beginning of this preface). -

This book, however, shows how dangerous it is to rely on first impressions. Scholars who are active in this field have been hearing about Witt’s study for some time before it was actually published–it has been some twenty years in the making–and from this point on it will serve as the standard treatment of its subject. -

The seventh centenary of the birth of Francesco Petrarca (2004), as often happens on the occasion of similar events, has brought the name of the honoree to the attention of both scholars and the wider public. Unlike a hundred years ago, there was fortunately no thought of making a new monu- ment in his honor or a pilgrimage to the house and tomb of the poet, but as has already happened more than one time in the past, the celebrations were appropriate to the times. We have the inevitable but fruitless polemics against the slowness of the Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Francesco Petrarca, born on the occasion of the preceding centenary of the poet’s birth (1904). And yet with the festivities now concluded, if we sort through the initiatives and writings that have appeared or been announced on Petrarca and his circle, the balance on the whole is positive. -

Tiner, PhD, Curator Professor of Latin & English Lynchburg College IMAGE + TEXT The integration of text and image is an ongoing theme in the visual arts, dating from proto-literate pictographs, to the cuneiform of Sumerian tablets and the hieroglyphics of Egyptian funerary papyri that were the domain of priests and shamans. Greek vase painters frequently inserted identification in narrative compositions so the viewer could identify the protagonist. The Roman codex (book) with integrated text and images became the preferred format for illustrated documents in the Classical period. During the Middle Ages, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all epitomized sacred texts as image. Artists of freely integrated letters and lines in manuscript illumination. These Medieval allegories and narratives from the Talmud, Bible, and Qu’ran, rendered in visual form, ushered in a golden age of text and image that reached its zenith during the 15th and 16th Centuries. Renaissance and Baroque printmakers faced the question of the assimilation of text and image whenever applying an engraving burin or etching needle to a copper plate. Jan Wierix confronted this question in his engraving, The Parable of the Good Samaritan (in this exhibition), where he introduced the text in two columns, with each sentence listed A through I. Another approach to text and image where the artist provides inscriptions, title, subject as if they were carved into the stone and surrounding architectural features, as in the engraving of St. Bernard of Clairvaux. A more common approach was to place inscriptions, dialogue, and commentary outside the margins of the image, as in Vergil’s Aeneid with Commentaries, Liber Undecimus CCCLXXXI verso (both in this exhibition). -

Introduction The Bolognese Dominican, Leandro Alberti’s (1479-1552) Descrittione di tutta Italia was first printed in 1550, about a hundred years after the first publication, in MS format, of Biondo Flavio’s Italia Illustrata1. That is to say, it was written and released into a different world from Biondo’s, one being transformed by printed books2, by a propagating convulsion of Christianity that incentivized manifold scholarship, by the reclamation of a hemisphere, and, with exploration, by the re-conceiving of the nature of travel and distance and time – among other epochal developments. For Readers of Apuleius' the Golden
‘Food for Thought’ for Readers of Apuleius’ The Golden Ass MAAIKE ZIMMERMAN University of Groningen 1. ‘Chain of Receptions’ ‘Homer has been changed for us by Virgil and Milton, who have left their traces in his text and thereby enabled new possibilities of meaning’. Thus Charles Martindale.1 Martindale writes on Latin poetry, but his book offers insights that are helpful for understanding the reception of Apuleius’ prose text as well. His concept of the Chain of Receptions is particularly enlightening: ‘…our current interpretations of ancient texts, whether or not we are aware of it, are, in complex ways, constructed by the chain of receptions through which their continued readability has been effected.’2 In the chain of receptions of Apuleius’ The Golden Ass from Late Antiquity through the sixteenth century, allegorical interpretations of both the Lucius story and the tale of Cupid and Psyche have played a major role.3 It is a plausible guess that the Sallustius who under supervision of his teacher En- delechius in the last decade of the fifth century A.D. was preparing a codex of Apuleius’ Metamorphoses (together with the Apology and possibly also the Florida), was especially attracted to the Metamorphoses because he and his teacher were aware of that novel’s possibilities of an allegorical interpre- ————— 1 Martindale 1993, 6. 2 Martindale 1993, 7. 3 This chain of interpretations has been discussed in full by Julia Gaisser, who likewise applies Martindale’s concept of the ‘chain of receptions’: Gaisser 2003, 23–24; 36–37. Rees aimed to provide today’s readers with a modern rendering of Bacon’s early modern Latin, one that is free from troubling anachronisms and misleading turns of phrase — and he has succeeded. The brilliance of the translations makes it possible for all readers to fathom the allusions in the preface and work their way through the intricacies of the apho- risms. These aphorisms include some of Bacon’s most important philosophical arguments, such as those on the interpretation of nature, the refutation of native human reason (the description of the idols of the Tribe, Cave, and Market), and a discussion of how to discover axioms of nature. The excellent supporting ma- terials that accompany the translated texts will help any reader, no matter how knowledgeable or expert, through the labyrinthine paths of Bacon’s own argu- ments as well as the arguments made about him by generations of scholars and critics.
