This Spring Half-Term Took on an International Feel with Our Japanese Multiple Maths page 2 Japanese Exchange page 5 Charity Barn Dance page 12 Highcliffe Newsletter H2U This Spring half-term took on an international feel with our Japanese friends visiting our school for their annual exchange trip; our students visiting the vibrant and cultural city of Berlin for their GCSE History and German studies, and the mountains of Italy were explored by our intrepid skiers. Our Sixth Formers mixed business with pleasure at Disneyland, Paris, and discovered the wonders of Iceland, please view the details of these trips in the Sixth Form Newsletter. Along with many other enrichment activities that have taken place this half-term, sport has had a bountiful season with a bumper section shown in this edition of the H2U newsletter. Please enjoy reading through the pages and best wishes for a well-earned Easter Holiday! 1| Highcliffe School Newsletter - Spring Half-Term 2 - 2017 Enrichment trips, activities and events: Spring Half-Term 2 - 2017 MULTIPLE MATHS! This half-term, our Maths faculty have been busy with events and competitions and are delighted with the results! Our chess team competed in the Junior Chess 2017 competition and won their rounds, securing a place in the final, which will be held on the 26th April. This is a first for the Highcliffe Chess Team! Full story and results will be in the next H2U. TEAM MATHS CHALLENGE The Team Maths Challenge is run by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust and consists of several different problem solving rounds, all of which are completed in teams or two pairs. The most successful team from each regional final then compete against each other in the national final. Our four year 8 students had a very successful day at the regional final of the Team Maths Challenge at Parkstone Grammar School and were an absolute credit to the school. We came 4th out of 18 schools and since the top 3 positions went to grammar and independent schools, we were the highest performing non-selective state school. Well done to Jacob, Tom, James and Annelie. UNIVERSITY CHALLENEGE A small group of year 9 students spent the day at Bournemouth University for a Maths workshop run by the Further Maths Support Programme. The day was split into 3 sessions; problem solving, kinematics and card games. Throughout the day the students faced lots of difficult and challenging problems but they worked effectively as a team and persevered. Abigail Hefferan did a great job at demonstrating her answer in front of several other schools with the help of Ruby Blackmore and Toby Nash discovered a card trick that even the event organiser hadn’t thought of! All in all the students were a credit to the school and made the most of the opportunity given to them. A MOB OF PINK KANGAROOS Every year, our students sit the UK Mathematical Challenge, run by the UK Mathematics Trust. This year, we have achieved excellent results for the Intermediate Challenge, aimed at students in Years 10 and 11. Over 250,000 students from more than 3000 schools and colleges across the UK participated in the Intermediate Challenge, held on the 2nd February, and we are delighted with the achievements of our students: 5 students achieved Gold level 15 students achieved Silver level 33 students achieved Bronze level The 5 students achieving Gold level qualifies them to take a further challenge, The Pink Kangaroo. This is a tremendous achievement as the Pink Kangaroo competition is Europe-wide and by invitation only for those meeting an incredibly high threshold. Our five Pink Kangaroos are: Louise, Tarka, Daniel, Kai & Jessica These five students took the European Pink Kangaroo Mathematical Challenge on the 16th March and we eagerly await their results! Huge congratulations to our students and the Mathematics Team. 2| Highcliffe School Newsletter - Spring Half-Term 2 - 2017 Enrichment trips, activities and events: Spring Half-Term 2 - 2017 Enrichment trips, activities and events: Spring Half-Term 2 - 2017 DA VINCI PRODUCT DESIGN Year 9 Monkey World Project Year 9 Product Design students were introduced to their new project by Annie Bentley, the Education Officer at Monkey World. A collaboration with the centre was formed to create an exciting live project for GCSE students in which they have been asked to create an original and creative product to raise awareness of, and funding for, Monkey World. They are working in pairs to create a product to encourage charitable donations at the primate rescue centre in Dorchester. The Product Design students have been busy designing and modelling ideas for their Monkey World Donation box. In the upcoming weeks, students will be participating in a ‘Dragons Den’ style presentation to pitch their ideas…watch this space! HIGHCLIFFE PERFORMS WELL IN ROTARY TECHNOLOGY TOURNAMENT On the 9th March, Highcliffe School attended the annual district Rotary Club Technology Tournament and through outstanding team- work, problem solving and enthusiasm achieved excellent results. The students conducted themselves in an exemplary manner and were a real credit to themselves and the school. With representative teams from 13 local secondary schools, the competition was fierce as the teams designed and constructed debris clearing vehicles using a limited number of tools and resources. The KS3 team, consisting of Mia, Bailey, Yasmin and Austin, eagerly got stuck into the project, working together to create a successful outcome. The KS4 team involving Penny, Woody, Ollie and Daniel had a strategic approach, producing a thorough and detailed portfolio of their ideas process, achieving a desirable and well earnt 3rd place against stiff competition. This year’s performance puts Highcliffe School in the top 3 most successful schools over the 4 years the tournament has been running, which is fantastic news for the school and the ADT department. CULINARY CREATIONS Exam season has already started in Da Vinci with Product Design, Art, Graphics and Textiles GCSEs all underway. We wish them all best of luck! Well done to the catering students who have already completed their GCSE practical exams - an appetising example is: Olivia’s chosen country was Italy. She produced two highly skilled dishes of lasagne, accompanied by coleslaw, garlic bread, salad and dressing. Her dessert was an Italian meringue cake, decorated with fresh fruits and a fruit coulis. LANGUAGES AND CATERING - THE PERFECT COMBO! Following on from Year 8 progression evening, we hosted a very successful dual languages and catering event where 45 Year 8 students made pan con tomate and crêpes, as well as doing language activities. 3| Highcliffe School Newsletter - Spring Half-Term 2 - 2017 Enrichment trips, activities and events: Spring Half-Term 2 - 2017 EUROPEAN AND INTERNATIONAL CULTURE BERLIN GCSE HISTORY TRIP Our Year 9 and 10 students studying History and German had a fantastic time, forged new friendships, and learnt so much about the history of this incredible, multifaceted city. The boys were warmly greeted by families of Highcliffe students who kindly looked after them for the duration of their stay. Whilst in school, the students participated in a range of activities. They joined in with volleyball with Year 10 students and taught a traditional Japanese fishermen’s dance to a group of Year 9 girls. They also demonstrated calligraphy and origami to a group of Year 9 graphics and art students. For much of the rest of the time, the Johoku students were accompanied by their buddies who took them to lessons. In short, the Johoku boys became a part of our school, impressing students and staff with their positive attitude and willingness to join in with Highcliffe school life. In the evenings, they spent time with their host families, forging friend- ships and participating in family life. Without a doubt, the students of Johoku School bought a bit of magic to Highcliffe School. Further- more, their host buddies demonstrated great maturity and responsibility. They made great efforts to ensure the Johoku boys felt at home and could return with great memories of their time at Highcliffe. If you’re interested in hosting a student, please let Mr Bryden know. Johoku visits us every March and we’re always on the look out for host families to look after them at that time! Also: look out for news coming out shortly about the trip to Japan in 2018! 5| Highcliffe School Newsletter - Spring Half-Term 2 - 2017 Enrichment trips, activities and events: Spring Half-Term 2 - 2017 WORLD BOOK DAY On Wednesday 1st March, we were delighted to welcome authors Jason Rohan and Lil Chase to Highcliffe to celebrate World Book Day. Jason Rohan’s Kuromori series has been hugely popular with our students and he was asked to run workshops with a group of our Year 8 students on the subject of plot structures. Lil Chase was visiting Highcliffe for the first time. Her books include The Boys’ School Girls series and Secrets, Lies & Locker 62. Lil’s mission during her visit was to run workshops on character creation.
