1| Newsletter - Spring Half-Term 2 - 2017 Enrichment trips, activities and events: Spring Half-Term 2 - 2017 MULTIPLE MATHS! This half-term, our Maths faculty have been busy with events and competitions and are delighted with the results! Our chess team competed in the Junior Chess 2017 competition and won their rounds, securing a place in the final, which will be held on the 26th April. This is a first for the Highcliffe Chess Team! Full story and results will be in the next H2U.

TEAM MATHS CHALLENGE The Team Maths Challenge is run by the Mathematics Trust and consists of several different problem solving rounds, all of which are completed in teams or two pairs. The most successful team from each regional final then compete against each other in the national final. Our four year 8 students had a very successful day at the regional final of the Team Maths Challenge at and were an absolute credit to the school. We came 4th out of 18 schools and since the top 3 positions went to grammar and independent schools, we were the highest performing non-selective state school. Well done to Jacob, Tom, James and Annelie.

UNIVERSITY CHALLENEGE A small group of year 9 students spent the day at University for a Maths workshop run by the Further Maths Support Programme. The day was split into 3 sessions; problem solving, kinematics and card games. Throughout the day the students faced lots of difficult and challenging problems but they worked effectively as a team and persevered. Abigail Hefferan did a great job at demonstrating her answer in front of several other schools with the help of Ruby Blackmore and Toby Nash discovered a card trick that even the event organiser hadn’t thought of! All in all the students were a credit to the school and made the most of the opportunity given to them. A MOB OF PINK KANGAROOS Every year, our students sit the UK Mathematical Challenge, run by the UK Mathematics Trust. This year, we have achieved excellent results for the Intermediate Challenge, aimed at students in Years 10 and 11. Over 250,000 students from more than 3000 schools and colleges across the UK participated in the Intermediate Challenge, held on the 2nd February, and we are delighted with the achievements of our students: 5 students achieved Gold level 15 students achieved Silver level 33 students achieved Bronze level

The 5 students achieving Gold level qualifies them to take a further challenge, The Pink Kangaroo. This is a tremendous achievement as the Pink Kangaroo competition is Europe-wide and by invitation only for those meeting an incredibly high threshold.

Our five Pink Kangaroos are: Louise, Tarka, Daniel, Kai & Jessica These five students took the European Pink Kangaroo Mathematical Challenge on the 16th March and we eagerly await their results! Huge congratulations to our students and the Mathematics Team.

A collaboration with the centre was formed to create an exciting live project for GCSE students in which they have been asked to create an original and creative product to raise awareness of, and funding for, Monkey World. They are working in pairs to create a product to encourage charitable donations at the primate rescue centre in Dorchester. The Product Design students have been busy designing and modelling ideas for their Monkey World Donation box. In the upcoming weeks, students will be participating in a ‘Dragons Den’ style presentation to pitch their ideas…watch this space!

HIGHCLIFFE PERFORMS WELL IN ROTARY TECHNOLOGY TOURNAMENT On the 9th March, Highcliffe School attended the annual district Rotary Club Technology Tournament and through outstanding team- work, problem solving and enthusiasm achieved excellent results. The students conducted themselves in an exemplary manner and were a real credit to themselves and the school. With representative teams from 13 local secondary schools, the competition was fierce as the teams designed and constructed debris clearing vehicles using a limited number of tools and resources. The KS3 team, consisting of Mia, Bailey, Yasmin and Austin, eagerly got stuck into the project, working together to create a successful outcome. The KS4 team involving Penny, Woody, Ollie and Daniel had a strategic approach, producing a thorough and detailed portfolio of their ideas process, achieving a desirable and well earnt 3rd place against stiff competition. This year’s performance puts Highcliffe School in the top 3 most successful schools over the 4 years the tournament has been running, which is fantastic news for the school and the ADT department.

CULINARY CREATIONS Exam season has already started in Da Vinci with Product Design, Art, Graphics and Textiles GCSEs all underway. We wish them all best of luck! Well done to the catering students who have already completed their GCSE practical exams - an appetising example is: Olivia’s chosen country was Italy. She produced two highly skilled dishes of lasagne, accompanied by coleslaw, garlic bread, salad and dressing. Her dessert was an Italian meringue cake, decorated with fresh fruits and a fruit coulis.

LANGUAGES AND CATERING - THE PERFECT COMBO! Following on from Year 8 progression evening, we hosted a very successful dual languages and catering event where 45 Year 8 students made pan con tomate and crêpes, as well as doing language activities.

JAPANESE EXCHANGE 2017

In March, Highcliffe School welcomed 14 students and two members of staff from our Japanese partner school, Johoku High School for Boys in Hiroshima.

The boys were warmly greeted by families of Highcliffe students who kindly looked after them for the duration of their stay.

Whilst in school, the students participated in a range of activities. They joined in with volleyball with Year 10 students and taught a traditional Japanese fishermen’s dance to a group of Year 9 girls. They also demonstrated calligraphy and origami to a group of Year 9 graphics and art students.

For much of the rest of the time, the Johoku students were accompanied by their buddies who took them to lessons.

In short, the Johoku boys became a part of our school, impressing students and staff with their positive attitude and willingness to join in with Highcliffe school life.

In the evenings, they spent time with their host families, forging friend- ships and participating in family life.

Without a doubt, the students of Johoku School bought a bit of magic to Highcliffe School. Further- more, their host buddies demonstrated great maturity and responsibility. They made great efforts to ensure the Johoku boys felt at home and could return with great memories of their time at Highcliffe.

If you’re interested in hosting a student, please let Mr Bryden know. Johoku visits us every March and we’re always on the look out for host families to look after them at that time!

Also: look out for news coming out shortly about the trip to Japan in 2018!

WORLD BOOK DAY On Wednesday 1st March, we were delighted to welcome authors Jason Rohan and Lil Chase to Highcliffe to celebrate World Book Day. Jason Rohan’s Kuromori series has been hugely popular with our students and he was asked to run workshops with a group of our Year 8 students on the subject of plot structures. Lil Chase was visiting Highcliffe for the first time. Her books include The Boys’ School Girls series and Secrets, Lies & Locker 62. Lil’s mission during her visit was to run workshops on character creation. One student, Scott said ‘I enjoyed meeting Jason & Lil, because it will help me in my English lessons when we do nar- rative writing. It was also great talking to two different, but really good, authors. It was amazing!’ Another student to participate was Bethany who said, ‘I enjoyed meeting the authors because I am now able to expand my English skills, it made me feel that I would like to be an author and write books.’ Jason and Lil have both contacted us since their visit to say how much they enjoyed the time they spent here and how impressed they were with the students. World Book Day this year will definitely be remembered as a positive and rewarding time for the students, staff and authors.

YEAR 10 MOCK INTERVIEWS The mock interview programme has been another great success this year with over 20 interviewers coming into school to interview our students over 4 days. The programme could not run without the valuable ‘experts’ who give up their time freely; many have done so for many years and we are very appreciative of their assistance and loyalty to Highcliffe School. With many coming from the world of business, they bring with them a wealth of experience and the students receive instant feedback on how they have conducted themselves and given some tips for improvement, if needed. Both interviewers and interviewees value the opportunity and see the whole process as most worthwhile. Indeed, some students have been offered work experience as a result of their interview or would have been offered jobs if there was one!

YEAR 10 BACKSTAGE PASSES FOR THE B.I.C. As part of the GCSE Music Tech course, a group of Year 10 students visited a local large multi-purpose venue (the BIC). The purpose of the trip was to take a guided backstage tour to raise awareness of the behind-the-scenes job roles such as the promoter, the stage technician, lighting and sound engineers and the tour manager. The students learnt the technicalities of stage design to meet the needs of visiting artists and bands, as well as the logistics and organisations involved in setting up and de-rigging live events.

6| Highcliffe School Newsletter - Spring Half-Term 2 - 2017 Enrichment trips, activities and events: Spring Half-Term 2 - 2017 YEAR 8 CHEMISTRY FESTIVAL - SOUTHAMPTON UNIVERSITY Four Year 8 students attended a Chemistry Festival at Southampton University.

In the morning they carried out forensic work which involved activities such as flame testing and precipitation reactions. In the afternoon they investigated which vegetables would make the best indicator. To finish the day we were all treated to an amazing lecture which included explosions, experiments with liquid nitrogen and dry ice.

All had an amazing time, learning lots of chemistry in a fun and exciting way. Annelie commented “I thought the day was really fun. I especially liked the second activity with the red cabbage because I liked making up the experiments ourselves instead of just following instructions. Thank you for taking us”. Juliet also had a super time “The Southampton Chemistry Festival was a great experience! The team challenges were very enjoyable and I liked working in a university science lab”.

YEAR 10 CHEMISTRY LECTURE - SOUTHAMPTON UNIVERSITY

On the 29th March, thirty Year 10 pupils were invited to the annual Schools’ Chemistry lecture at the University of Southampton. The event was sponsored by the Mid-Southern Counties section of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the lecture was presented by Eddie Henbury from the Esso Petroleum Company UK Ltd, Fawley Refinery. During the lecture students had the opportunity to learn about the amazing range of products we get from crude oil, which have transformed our lives and have made society what it is today. The lecture featured spectacular demonstrations, and also discussed the interplay of chemistry and physics in solving the challenges that face the world today in STEM careers.

“We were treated to some incredible experiments during the afternoon, involving imploding cans, coloured fire and even exploding air. As well as these extremely entertaining experiments, the university itself was an inspiring motivation and a reminder of where we could all be in the near future. It was a remarkable experience. ” Year 10 student

“The trip was a great experience for students that would want to pursue a career in the field of Chemistry. It was a great learning opportunity and a very fun trip with practical demonstrations and experiments, such as the Ruben tube and the Van Der Graaf generator” Year 10 student

EXPRESSIVE ARTS EXAMS

A big well done to all year 11 expressive arts students who have completed their final performance exam this week. All work was devised from a range of stimuli given to them by the examination board. They have been preparing their work since January. Well done for your hard work!

7| Highcliffe School Newsletter - Spring Half-Term 2 - 2017 Sporting activities and events: Spring Half-Term 2 - 2017 FOOTBALL FOCUS This has been a hugely successful year for the boys’ football, with numerous students being fully committed and involved to their teams. This dedication has helped their performances to develop over the season and led to the teams making their way to the final stages of both Town and County Competitions.

Firstly a tremendous well done to the Year 10 football team, who have won both the Bournemouth and District Cup and the prestigious Under 15 Mark Frowde County Cup. The boys beat Twynham 4-1 in this trophy, under floodlights at Bridge, Christchurch Football Club, with goals from Freddie Bullard (2), Tom Miller and Ethan Perry-West. (Squad: Liam Sales, Haydn Way, Sammy Smith, Cameron Solly, Simon Cooper, Joshua Caffyn, Toby Bailey (Capt), Tom Miller, Joe Spolander, Ethan Perry West, Freddie Bullard, Theo Fry, Jack Beddow, Harry Shapcott, Harvey Bunce and Euan Beale) - Player of the season – Freddie Bullard.

The Year 11 team made it through to the final of the Bournemouth and District Cup only losing 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time; they also made it to the semi-final stage of the County competition. Finally the Sixth Form team made it to the Schools U19 Quarter finals before eventually going out to High. - Year 7 player of the season – Joshua Squires. Year 8 player of the season – James Arnold, Year 9 player of the season – Ryan Varley. The PE team would also like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to Mr Stevens, who has given up his time to coach and manage the Year 9 football team this year, on top of the commitments he has within Science.

GIRLS FOOTBALL Year 7 County Cup runners up: The game was a tough battle with a half-time score of 1– 1. Despite Highcliffe being dominant, the final score was 4-2 to Broadstone Middle School. The girls should be proud of themselves having not conceded a goal all season and dealing with their nerves in the final was an important learning experience. No doubt, they will come back even stronger next year! The same Year 7 team won the Christchurch and Bournemouth schools’ football tournament; two teams were entered from Highcliffe and came 1st and 2nd. The Year 7 and 8 combined team won the Dorset schools qualifier and will now represent Christchurch in the Dorset school games final in April. Well done girls! Year 8 and 9 girls reached the County Cup semi-final where they faced Woodroffe School and lost in a very close game 3-2. Year 10 convincingly won their County Cup semi-final against 6-0. It was good to see some great football being played, their final will be played after the Easter Holidays and we wish them the best of luck.

RUGBY ROUND-UP CONTINUED...

Year 10 and 11s’ season was greatly affected by others commitments the players had. Be it booster sessions in preparation for their GCSE’s or County Cup football finals. However, they were some very memorable moments of the course of the matches played. Most notable the win against Ballard, which went down to the last minute, and a superb performance against St Peters. The team was very well led by Patrick Lewis. Campbell Golding’s progress on the rugby field has been exceptional. Players such as Oliver Woodhouse, Simon Cooper, Michael Devlin, Daniel Blay, Tim Holloway, Toby Budge, Connor Hedley deserve a particular mention for the level of commitment they demonstrated over the course of the season. The squad were led incredibly well by Sami Hattab who has developed into an exceptional Captain both on and off the pitch.
